  • Lean In 03: Expression. Kamau Abayomi on Unleashing Your Uniqueness and Inspiring The Inner Artist

In life, we often forget how essential it is to express our true uniqueness. When it comes to our creative pursuits one of the biggest roadblocks that get in the way of that is fear – it’s time to let that go.

Welcome to Lean In. A podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.

If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.

In this episode of Lean In, I dive into the fascinating life of Kamau Abayomi and the inner workings of his highly artistic mind. Kamau is the embodiment of the term “Artist”. From being surrounded by creatives in his celebrity-filled kitchen to a clairvoyant’s vision, kick-starting his successful career.

During his journey, Kamau Abayomi has been named ‘Best Poet’ in the Oakland, California poetry slam finals. He is the 2-time winner of the International Ubud Writers & Readers Festival Poetry Slam in Bali, Indonesia.

He has been a guest artist and workshop facilitator at the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India and has conducted poetry, art and activism workshops in Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, West Papua.

Kamau has been the featured poet on three chart-topping afro-house singles released by 2017’s #1 afro-house label, MoBlack Records:

    • VNICVM ft. Kamau Abayomi ‘Know Thyself’
    • MoBlack, M. Caporale & Kamau Abayomi, ‘Kiss We Pt. 1’
    • MoBlack, Moon Rocket & Kamau Abayomi, ‘You & I Are God’

Present in all of Kamau’s work is a deep love, respect and honouring of the unique individual & the collective identity. Without separation, harmonizing the mind/body/spirit dynamics of allowing one to navigate the complexities of life from a centred and balanced perspective.

The art that flows through Kamau delves deep into dialogue on spiritual awareness, energy dynamics, nature, connection and soul purpose, in a manner that is grounded and relatable.

As with all good stories, Kamau starts at the very beginning of his creative journey. From his first stage performance at the age of five, to mentoring the Bali hip-hop dancer outfit, Aerial Crew. He explains that we should all open up into our own uniqueness and why persistence is crucial for learning new skills.

I could have talked to him for hours, and got so much from our conversation, and I know that you’ll love him as much as I do.

Other insights we talk about are:

    • Kamau’s mother and why she was his original influence
    • The Bboys – Kamau’s award-winning mentorships
    • How Kamau gets into his multiple creative processes
    • The importance of expressing through art and using space
    • How you can begin ‘taking back your brush’ and open up to your uniqueness

Welcome to ‘Your Space,’ an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.

This session of “Your Space’ is the partner for episode 2 of “Lean In”: Hope. Rick Pursell on a Journey Through Through War, Overcoming Grief and Life’s Purpose.

Drive and determination are often applauded in our societies as desirable characteristics to possess. However it is hope, and the ability to rely on it’s warm and nurturing embrace that has pushed humanity further than any other trait.

Hope that things will get better. Hope that we will achieve our dreams. Hope that the world we create will be better for the generations that will follow.

In this accompaniment to episode 2 of ‘Lean In’, I will be your guide through intuitive and easy meditations, emotional processes, guided visualisations and the occasional blunt truth to get your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.

The perfect addition to help you to lean in.

  • Lean In 02: Hope. Rick Pursell on a Journey Through War, Overcoming Grief and Life’s Purpose

An unexpected experience in our lives shapes the way we experience this world. But any experience can be a positive in our lives.

In this episode of Lean In, I invited Rick Pursell to tell his fascinating story. It’s a tale fraught with fear, inner turmoil, purpose, wisdom and above all, hope.

Rick opens up about his past and what it means to live with purpose. From his idyllic childhood exploring the lush English countryside. To planning his own suicide in the Vietnam War.

Rick’s most recent ventures are a far cry from the chaos of war. He is the co-founder of Heaven in Bali the five-star boutique homestay in Bali. Stemming from a deep desire to help others unlock their potential. A peaceful mountainside retreat in Ubud Bali that lives up to its name, the Koi Pond Strategy.

Rick is, to most people, the “Trusted Advisor”. He speaks about personal transformation and professional leadership development. He has presented an enlightening TEDx talk at the Ubud, Gaya Fusion. Rick is the author of books:

    • “Cause No Harm – A Handbook for Humanity”
    • “Living From The Heart,”
    • “5 Easy Steps To Mindfulness.”

His journey from being a “broken man” to rising up and embarking on a deep spiritual journey is inspiring. He has moved from the darkness and into a lighter space.

Rick shares with me some truly incredible experiences and lessons:

    • A pacifist, a man at war, suicidal thoughts, a decision, a hope
    • The erupting inner volcano – how Rick overcame his grief
    • The impact of entering into a new stage of clarity and stillness had for Rick
    • Why we all have a life’s purpose
    • Rick’s enlightening experience in India with a Swami teacher and a mangy dog
    • What ‘downloading’ really means
    • How we can all prioritise our own personal values
    • Why elder wisdom still holds value for the modern youth

  • Lean In 01: Uncertainty. Pat Reardon on Surrendering to Fate, The Tapestry of Life and Living the Moment

Getting through the tough challenges in life usually leaves us feeling like we’re out of control. Instead of fighting the challenge, maybe it’s time to get a bit more flexible.

In the debut episode of Lean In, I could think of no better guest to share with than my partner, Pat Reardon.

So, a little about Pat. He is an avid traveller and loves nothing more than stepping out into the wide world, arm in arm with me and the kids. We love to explore the incredible cultures, languages and teachings our planet has to offer. Professionally speaking, he’s the entrepreneur in our partnership.

Pat is the co-founder of Natural Instinct Healing, our award-winning detox, fasting and retreat. Located in the heart of the beautiful Ubud in Bali. His degree in international business and career in sales and marketing are essential elements of the success we enjoy.

You won’t find him sitting behind a computer desk, but immersed and hands-on with clients – or catching a few waves down on the beach.

Our beautiful life together hasn’t been without its obstacles. We will be the first to admit, it’s been a pretty wild ride.

In this episode, I dive into Pat’s turbulent life story. From leaving Australia at age 18 in search of adventure to a devastating cancer diagnosis that shook us to the core.

Pat talks about dealing with the fear of the unknown and his conscious decision to be more present in the face of change.

Other insights we talk about are:

    • Pat’s journey from herding goats to running a Bali retreat
    • Why passion is the fuel for your inner fire
    • The power flexibility and freedom in life
    • How a trek in the Amazon shook up Pat’s path

    • How mindfulness and parenting go hand in hand
    • Pat, the traveller and nature lover – indulging in the rawness of nature
    • Why it’s important to look at what is happening in our own consciousness
