  • EC 021: Using Six Sigma to Green Your Office Supplies
    Summary
On this podcast, I talk about some work I’ve done recently to try and improve the office supply purchasing decisions, using the Greener Office program through Office Depot.
I explain how we took the initial report of our “green score,” and how we have started to apply the DMAIC Six Sigma project approach to tackle this issue, specifically around recycled paper purchasing. I’ll explain how we are approaching it, so that we don’t simply add cost to the company without trying to better understand the printing process that is driving the usage.

On this podcast, I talk about a recent presentation I gave at the Port of Portland (at the Portland airport).
I was asked to present on how Lean and Six Sigma can be used to help reduce food waste. There is a big effort to make reductions in the Portland area, and we had attendees from local counties, city government and state agencies. Kjell Van Zoen co-presented with me.
I will be posting a link to the video and slides in the near future.

  • EC 019: Lean and Sustainable Consortium
    Summary
On this podcast, I talked about a recent trip I made to Wales for the Lean and Sustainable Consortium. This was my 3rd trip to this quarterly event, and it was excellent (as usual)! We toured Welsh Water, to see how they are applying Lean and Six Sigma, along with improving their sustainability program.
I also provide an update on my book, and the updated module I added to the free online training course.

  • EC 018: Lean Six Sigma and Sustainability Radio Interview
    Summary
On this podcast, I was interviewed by Luke Andersen for a radio show and podcast called Northwest Business, on 1080 The Fan, here in Portland. It is focused on bringing attention to local businesses in the Portland area. He wanted to know more about Lean, Six Sigma and Sustainability.
I haven’t really talked much about the people side of sustainability, or my work with Lean Portland and applying lean to nonprofits in the area, so hopefully you’ll find this topic pretty interesting.
Lean Portland ia a local group of Lean and Six Sigma professionals who volunteer with nonprofits. I’ll go into a little more detail in the podcast.
I’d also like to point out that I’ve just put out an online version of the 2-day class, it’s now available on the website at LeanSixSigmaEnvironment.org.
It’s not the full class yet, but eventually I’ll have all the content converted over. It’s the first couple hours of the class, so if you go to the website, and look for the link to the “Lean Six Sigma and the Environment” online course. It’s also under the Getting Started section in the upper right section. I just added that in there to help with navigation on the site. I also made some changes to the theme, and the look and feel of the site, basically to remove some clutter. A little 5s on the website.
I also have another short presentation that I made recently to a local sustainability symposium on basically the same topic on Lean Six Sigma and Sustainability. I’ll be posting that very soon as well.
Finally, I’ve got a short book I’m working on the last couple months, also related to this topic. A few of you have gotten a chance to look it over and provide feedback, and I really appreciate that. I hope to have it available for download by the end of the month.
Alright, so I hope you enjoy my interview with Luke on Northwest Business

  • EC 016: Employee “Green Bag” Sessions and New Co-working Space
    Summary
In this podcast, I discuss a new approach for employee engagement called Employee “Green Bag” Sessions, which is similar to the concept of the “Brown Bag” education sessions. I explain the topics we’ve covered over the past year, including biking to work, taking the bus, solar panels at home, net zero homes and electricity monitoring.
I also discuss a new office space I’m renting out, and my plan for 2017 with the podcast.

  • EC 015: Tips for Encouraging Environmental Behavior Change
    Summary
In this podcast, I play the recording of the presentation I gave at the 2nd Annual Green Festival Expo in Portland on Dec 11, 2016.
I talk about the misconception that education is sufficient to get people to change behaviors. I review a study on getting hotel guests to reuse their towels, and show a few videos about washing hands and reducing electricity at home. I talk about the Coffee Cup Campaign program I’m working on with Recycling Advocates, and how the Influencer model can be used to make changes using six sources of influence, specifically around reducing disposable coffee cup usage. I end with some tips from the book Switch, along with some other recommended books.
The presentation is about an hour long, but hopefully you’ll find it worth the time. Contact us if you would like a copy of the slides.
You can watch the video of the presentation below. One productivity tip I like to save time and be more efficient is to listen to podcasts or watch YouTube videos at 1.5x speed. It’s still audible at that speed, and you save 33% of the total time. You could cut down the time from 60 minutes to 40 minutes (60 / 1.5 = 40).

  • EC 014: Lean and Green Workflow Improvement – The 8 Wastes
    Summary
In this podcast, I play the recording of the presentation I gave with fellow Lean and Green expert Kjell Van Zoen at the Provender Alliance conference in Hood River, Oregon on Oct 6, 2016.
We talk about Lean basics (single piece flow, 5S, kaizen, Taiichi Ohno, value and culture) and focus on our personal experiences with the 8 forms of waste. This is a long podcast, about an hour and a half, but I think it will be worth the time to listen.

  • EC 013: Interview #2 on e6s Methods Podcast about Greening Your Lean Event
    Summary
For episode 13, I’m playing another interview I had with e6s Methods podcast, hosted by Aaron Spearin. We go over tips for greening your 5s events.
I also go over this in detail in Episode 9 of my podcast, which you can find at LeanSixSigmaEnvironment.org.
In this episode, we go beyond just the green discussion, and we talk about 5S in general, including the experiences we’ve both had, good and bad.
I highly recommend their podcast if you are Lean Six Sigma practitioner. I think you’ll get a lot of value out of it. You can go to e6s-Methods.com to learn more, and I’ll have a link in the show notes for this.
One note, the audio quality is not real good on my end. Aaron sounds great, but mine’s sounds like I’m in a fish tank or something. I’ll probably need to get a better headset or office setup. Hopefully it’s not too distracting, and you can still get a lot out of the episode.
Just a final reminder, the 90-day WASTE Walk Challenge is starting on October 1st. Time is running out! It’s completely free. We’re going to give you a step-by-step guidance on how to conduct a WASTE walk before the end of the calendar year, so the end of December, so you can implement those ideas within 90 days, so that would be the middle of next year. You have some time, it’s not super fast-paced. It’s designed for people’s schedules who are busy. You can look at the list of tasks that we’re going to ask you to do on our site. You can go to the upper right section of the webpage. If you’re interested, you can sign up, just put in your email address and then that will get you into the contact list for October 1st.
Basically, what you’re going to do, you’re going to get email reminders for each task as they are due, and then you can kind of stay on track with those tasks throughout the challenge. Go to LeanSixSigmaEnvironment.org and look for the link in the upper right section called “90-day WASTE Walk Challeng”
Hopefully, it’s a very simple way to get all you guys involved, and try out this “WASTE Walk” Challenge. I think you’ll really like it, I think it’s a great way to get your teams engaged, and it’s going to give you some experience and some practical examples you can show to help further your career into more sustainable-type projects and events. Maybe it’s going to lead to a different job, maybe it’s going to lead to a change in roles at your current job. Who knows? The more experience you’re building up, the more opportunities that will open up for you.
Let me know if you have any questions. You can contact me through the website. Hope you enjoy this upcoming episode and the interview with Aaron and I. Thanks!

  • EC 012: Setting up a Green Team at Work
    Summary
For the next podcast, I wanted to talk about setting up and improving an environmental (eco) green team at your work. This is one of the early activities you can do to improve sustainability at your job, or within organizations you work with.
I discuss my own experiences with creating and maintaining green teams at different facilities and within different formats. I also cover the tips suggested by the City of Portland’s Green Team Guide.
If you are listening to our podcast and reading our articles, and you don’t have a greenteam yet, then YOU are the person who needs to be setting one up! Don’t wait for someone else to do it. You are the person to do it, so take ownership and take action after this podcast.
