Michelle Belongie joins us this week with a throwback to how the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Analysts Network (WILEAN) started and how crime analysis has evolved over the past 25+ years. Michelle shares an ordinance that was implemented to hold landlords accountable for the crimes and disturbances that occur at their property in order to reduce those respective activities; the extra level of responsibility (or rather, fines) prompted landlords to be more vigilant, which in turn reduces the odds of criminality.

Svetlana Gubin didn’t let a language barrier stop her from breaking into the law enforcement analysis industry, and is now currently teaching other analysts how to effectively present data through the power of, well, Power BI. Svetlana shares how she capitalized on her advanced mathematical skills to secure a position as a crime analyst, and why she preferred her transition to a business analyst for the Oakland Police Department.

Steve Bennett joins us this week to share how he turned a sailor’s report card into a thriving analytical career. Steve explains his involvement in the Ohio Army National Guard’s counter drug program and how he ended up finding black tar heroin in a Xerox machine. Steve and Jason discuss threat assessments and security theater.

Nikki North joins us this week to share how she utilized her forensics investigations degree in her law enforcement career, and how she transitioned from a dispatcher to a crime analyst to the current real time crime center (RTCC) supervisor. Nikki spearheaded the creation of her agency’s RTCC, and has presented to multiple entities, including the IACA Annual Training Conference, on how other agencies can create their own.

John Fox held multiple roles in the U.S. Air Force before transitioning to a crime analyst position with a local police department where he settled down with his family. John is skilled in advanced data / statistical analytics, GIS, and operational management, and prides himself on doing “the little things” well each day.

Richard Browning has been in the law enforcement analysis field for over 20 years, specifically in the military sector. Richard shares how he decided on his specialization in analytics with the US Army, and his badge stories pertain to a helicopter crash, financial theft, and employee fraud that required in-depth analysis and investigations.

Erin Rivera joined us this week to share her journey from records to crime analysis. Erin’s badge story pertains to a narcotics investigation she helped solve and the relationships she fostered along the way.

Darin Lee, winner of the 2023 IACA Membership Award, joins us this week to discuss the missing person case that won him the award as well as a residential burglary that was cracked using GIS technologies. Darin is a GIS graduate, and shares how he bridged his specialty to the criminal justice profession; he also gives advice to aspiring analysts on what skills to invest in for the best return.

Akiko McClain started her career out as a victim advocate, helping crime survivors with the necessary paperwork, support during court appearances, and overall a guide and friend navigating the criminal justice and court system. Akiko then transitioned into intelligence work where she had a more hands-on approach to investigating cases and prosecuting offenders.

Joshua (Josh) Todd joins us this week to explain the structure of how BP develops, trains, and assigns their analysts as well as share his badge story relating to his usage of GIS technology and building relationships with partnering agencies to handle a case. Josh is also a fan of BLUF, Bottom Line Up Front, and discusses using BLUF when providing case support. Josh’s analyst experience also includes time as a criminal intelligence analyst with the New York Army National Guard Counter Drug Task Force.
