Sahih al-Bukhari – The Book of Tawheed – Lesson 12 (11/02/17)

Chapter 7: The Statement of Allah: "And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (Ibrahim 14:4). “Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! “(As-Saffat 37:180) “Honour, power and glory belong to Allâh and His Messenger” (Al-Munafiqun 63:8) and the one who swears by the Honour and Power of Allah and His attributes.

• Is it permissible to swear by the ‘Izzah of Allah and His attributes? Is it permissible to swear by the Qur’an? What is the proof?

• What is the ruling on the one who puts his hand on the Qur’an and swears by it?

Chapter: The Statement of Allah: "The King of mankind, (An-Nas 114:2)

Today we covered:

• The description that Allah has two hands

o There are multiples proofs from the Qur’an, Sunnah and consensus of the Salaf

Hadith No1 – Narrated by Abu Hurairah

The Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection Allah will hold the whole earth and fold the heaven with His right hand and say, 'I am the King: where are the kings of the earth?" '

Other proofs from the Qur’an:

Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things. (Al-Mulk 67:1)

Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands have created, the cattle, so that they are their owners. (Ya-Sin 36:71)

The Jews say: "Allâh's Hand is tied up (i.e. He does not give and spend of His Bounty)." Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for what they uttered. Nay, both His Hands are widely outstretched. He spends (of His Bounty) as He wills. (Al-Ma'idah 5:64)

• The hands of Allah do not resemble the hands of the creation

A few important importance:

• Is the hand of Allah a literal hand or is it a figurative / metaphorical referring to power and ability?

o The Belief of the Salaf is that it is a true hand (as with all other attributes) and this is the principle.

o The principle is that whatever Allah describes himself with is true.

o However – we do not compare His attributes to the creation. They are free from any comparison, description or imagination

• The people of innovation put their intellect before the texts, they may reject the texts if it does not fit with their understanding

• They reject the attribute of Allah’s hands – they claim it refers to power and ability.

• The Salaf were unanimously agreed about this and other attributes of Allah.

• What is the response of the People of Sunnah to this?
