In this episode, you'll hear:
- The long-term impacts of childhood trauma
Why people often stay in the abuseTools to help people get out of their own dark cyclesIn this episode, Mathew, Dr. Frank, and Christina discuss the physical manifestations of stress, what caused her to finally leave her abuser, and how abusers manipulate their victims and their victims' families. Dr. Christina opens up about what caused her to enter into and stay in her abusive relationships and how the abuse she experienced as a child impacted her as an adult. They also discuss the importance of shifting away from "why did it happen to me" and toward "why did it happen for me". Dr. Christina Stimson is a living example of the power of perseverance and is on a mission to show others that they can get their lives back no matter what.
Christina Stimson, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine and has overcome a lifetime of abuse and trauma to find strength and share her story with other people in need of hope. Dr. Christina grew up as the only daughter and the second of four children with a severely violent and emotionally abusive mother. She recounts that having no mother would have been better since hers left her feeling like she had no self-worth and denied her the right to feel love and safety. Her father was kind, but unfortunately, he was also unaware of the abuse, and she feared telling him would only make things worse for herself. He was a child of the Great Depression and insisted she become a doctor so she could have the kind of life that he was denied in poverty. Christina reluctantly went to medical school, where she met her first husband. She experienced more abuse at his hands, and after a horrible journey, she eventually escaped the marriage to find short-lived peace before meeting her second husband and starting the same cycle. Throughout her story, Dr. Stimson experienced a move across the world, isolation, two scary medical diagnoses, religious persecution, and betrayal from those who were supposed to love her most. She tells us that, through it all, it just never occurred to her that she could get up and walk away. She was living in fear until, one day, she was able to find the strength to take her life back from her abusers.
