Szabadság, szerelem

Kevés dolog lehet ennyire magyar, mint Goda Krisztina filmje. Az 1956-os forradalmat feldolgozó film, melynek címe Petőfi Sándor ars poeticája, a huszadik századi magyar történelem legfelemelőbb és legszomorúbb napjairól szól. Nem mellesleg vízilabda is van benne.

A történet szerint a Melbourne-i olimpiára utazó vízipóló csapat egy tagja, Karcsi (Fenyő Iván), beleszeret egy fiatal egyetemista lányba. A válogatott csapat tagjai nagy sztárok itthon, rengeteget csajoznak, és úgy érzik övék a világ. Karcsi azonban lassan megkomolyodik, Vikin keresztül, akit Dobó Kata játszik, egyre jobban átérzi a társadalom felszíne alatti forradalmi hangulatot, az emberek szabadságvágyát az elnyomó hatalom alól.

A film figyel a történelmi hűségre. Amikor a forradalmi hangulat ténylegesen forradalomba csap át, Vikit és Karcsit követve végiglátogatjuk az összes híres helyszínt. Karcsi rájön, hogy hazájának sorsa fontosabb, mint a sport, és teljesen a forradalom mögé áll. Amikor azonban rövid időre úgy tűnik, hogy sikerrel jártak a pesti fiatalok, mégis rábeszélik, hogy utazzon ki az olimpiára képviselni hazáját. Karcsi természetesen megy, így a forradalom vérbe fojtásáról már csak hírekből értesül. Az olimpián a magyar csapat a szovjetekkel játszik elődöntőt, ez volt az úgynevezett melbourne-i vérfürdő, a sport történetének leghíresebb összecsapása. Magyarország végül 4-0-ra kiüti a durván játszó szovjeteket, akiket a rendőrség ment ki az uszodából. A győzelem sajnos csak a medencében a miénk, a fiúk kinn értesülnek a forradalom bukásáról.

Goda Krisztina filmje azért kiemelkedő, mert, ahogyan azt a tapasztalat mutatja, nagyon nehéz az 1956-os eseményekről jó filmet készíteni, a korábbi próbálkozások sorra megbuktak. A Szabadság, szerelmet mégis több mint félmillióan látták, ez Magyarország tízmilliós lakosságához mérten hatalmas siker. A film kötelező darab mindenkinek, akit egy kicsit is érdekel a magyar történelem, vagy csak egy jó filmet szeretne látni.

Children of Glory

You can't go more Hungarian than Krisztina Goda's movie. The film, which got its title after poet Sándor Petőfi's ars poetica, is about the most uplifting and saddest days of twentieth century Hungarian history. Oh, and there is water polo too.

The story involves Karcsi (Iván Fenyő), a member of the national water polo team, who is to go to the Olympics in Melbourne, falling in love with a young university student. The members of the national team are stars here, and they spend a lot of time womanizing and feel like the world is theirs. Karcsi matures slowly through Viki (Kata Dobó); he starts to feel the tension of a revolution below the surface of Hungarian society, and the people's will to be free.

The movie is historically accurate. When the tension breaks out into an actual revolution, the audience gets to visit all the famous locations following Viki and Karcsi. Karcsi realizes that the fate of his country is more important than sports, and becomes a full-fledged revolutionist. When it seems that the youth of Budapest were successful, he is convinced to go to the Olympics and represent his country. Naturally, Karcsi does just that, so he only learns about the violent quashing of the revolution from the news. In the Olympics, the Hungarian team has to play the semi-final against the Soviets; this game is called "Blood in the Water" (or the bloodbath of Melbourne), the most famous "battle" in the history of the sport.
