    Farsang
A farsang Magyarországon január 6-tól, vízkereszttől „húshagyó keddig” tart.
A 16-17. században bujasága miatt tiltották.
„asszonyfarsang”, amikor a nők korlátlanul ihattak, táncolhattak. Farsang farkának utolsó napja a farsangtemetés napja. Ma is élő hagyomány vidéken a tél lezárásaként szalmabábut égetni.

    Farsang—The Carnival Season
Farsang in Hungary starts January 6 (Epiphany) and goes on until Shrove Tuesday. The holiday came to Hungary in the Middle Ages; the Hungarian name comes from German, meaning "chasing festivities." It is interesting to note that it's not related to any Christian holidays; its sole basis is rich folk tradition.
The carnival season is a loud period of time, filled with celebrations and balls. Its origin is an old belief that says that by the end of winter the sun is weak and evil spirits are strong, therefore people need to wear scary costumes to chase them away. The central character of the carnival was the undertaker; the farsang march was actually the funeral procession of cold and winter. Not many remember these superstitions today, but the fancy dress parties and dance festivities are still around. They were banned in the 16-17th centuries for their lewd nature.
The biggest parties take place on the last three days of the farsang period or farsangfarka, "farsang's tail." Other than Christmas, this holiday has the most folk traditions attached to it. The distinctive costume marches and games were present everywhere. Around the town of Mohács there is still a march called Busójárás, which is on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list.
The farsang was traditionally the time to choose a spouse, and get engaged or married, because later, during the Easter fast no weddings could be held. Girls in the carnival season gave posies or bouquets to the young man they liked, who on Farsang Sunday (the first day of farsangfarka) stuck the bouquets they received from their favorite girl on their hats. Farsang Monday is the so called "Women's Farsang" when women could drink and dance without inhibitions. The last day of farsangfarka is when farsang's funera [...]
