Are eggs safe to eat now? Could you also recommend safe sanitary napkins to use?
In July 2017, pesticide-contaminated eggs and products containing these eggs became a major concern in Europe. And just a month later, South Korea was hit with its own egg contamination scandal when eggs tainted by pesticides were also discovered in local egg-producing farms.
The Korean government ordered that all domestic egg farmers halt production and kicked off a massive contamination assessment.
The government announced guidelines that ordered all contaminated eggs and egg-related products be recalled and disposed of.
As a result of the assessment, 52 egg farms were labeled unfit to continue production due to their usage of insecticide,
and there was outrage when it was revealed that 31 out of the 52 producers had been certified as "eco-friendly" farms, raising concerns about the "eco-friendly" certification system itself.
Furthermore, there was criticism that the punishment policy regarding the use of pesticides was too light, with most farms getting away with a mere slap on the wrist. Some voiced the urgency of higher standards regarding the safety certification for livestock production.
In accordance with these concerns, the government issued countermeasures to be taken for the production, distribution, and certification of eggs and egg-related products, stating it will introduce a "farm environment label system" from 2019, which would revise the "livestock traceability system" to include chickens and eggs.
Egg scandal aside, a domestic research revealed carcinogenic substances in locally sold sanitary napkins. It became a controversial issue when many female citizens spoke out about the side effects they suffered while using the aforementioned feminine hygiene products.
However, the health authorities publicized their test results, stating that the domestically sold sanitary napkin products were deemed harmless and safe to use.
While concerns about pesticide-contaminated eggs and carcinogenic sanitary pads seem to have settled down, the reality is that many still find themselves distrustful of food safety and the "harmlessness" of female hygiene products.
