最近台股紅通通,你早上滑手機是先看盤,還是先看英文新聞?老實說吧,大概是前者。

沒關係。這集把過去兩週的 News Shadowing 文章一次幫你複習完,John老師和阿鍵老師還順便爆料:每一則當初為什麼挑它,哪幾則最適合拿去茶水間跟同事聊。

升息一碼,英文到底怎麼講?

Fed 升息了。新任主席 Kevin Warsh 是川普親自挑的人,川普又是出了名的愛降息,結果 Warsh 上任沒多久就投下升息票,調了 25 個基本點,是 2023 年以來第一次。伊朗戰事讓油價下不來,通膨壓不住,不升不行。

阿鍵老師覺得最有戲的是川普的反應。氣歸氣,他罵的是整個 Fed 理事會,偏偏沒罵 Warsh。自己任命的人,怎麼罵?

John老師則要你先把關鍵字搞定。升息是 rate hike,降息是 rate cut。台灣新聞說「升息一碼」,英文講 25 basis points,也就是 0.25%;兩碼就是 50 basis points。外資報告裡常直接寫 25bp。

升息的理由可以慢慢查,但開會時聽到 "a 25-basis-point hike" 要能馬上反應過來。這是商用英文會話的基本功。

Meta 把眼鏡上的鏡頭拿掉了

John老師自認是 tech geek,這則當然是他挑的。Meta Connect 2026 最讓兩位老師有感的,是一副沒有鏡頭的智慧眼鏡 Ray-Ban Meta Audio。只留聲音功能,43 公克,是 Meta 歷來最輕的一副。

為什麼要拿掉鏡頭?智慧眼鏡的偷拍爭議一直沒停過,錄影時眼睛旁邊那顆燈亮著,戴的人和被看的人都尷尬。John老師說得很實際:跑步的時候你根本不需要鏡頭,但還是可以用喊的叫出 Meta 的 AI 助理 Muse。

還有一點,它終於變好看了。之前那副戴在亞洲人臉上真的太大,這次總算有點文青風。

同場發表的還有新的 VR 眼鏡,把運算和電池做成外接的小盒子放口袋,鏡框本身只剩一百公克左右。John老師的朋友 Gavin 之前買過 Quest 3,所以他會這樣開話題:"Gavin, did you see the Oculus update? I think it's time to get a new one."

自己想買的話可以說 "I'm in the market for a new pair of smart glasses. I think I'm gonna get one for myself this Christmas." 台灣上市大概要等到明年,那就改成 "Give yourself a gift for the Lunar New Year."

拍一下就哀哀叫,三天賺五千美元

這則是阿鍵老師的最愛。SlapMac,名字就是全部的說明:拍一下你的 MacBook,它叫給你聽。

技術上沒什麼了不起,用的就是筆電裡本來就有的動作感應器。阿姆斯特丹的開發者 Tonino Catapano 先是拍了一支打筆電的短片爆紅,接著 48 小時內把它做成 app 開賣,三天進帳 5,000 美元。後來還加碼,插 USB 它也會叫。

阿鍵老師看到的重點是 business mindset。迷因的熱度就那幾天,錯過就賣不掉了,差別只在你能不能幫一個小概念加值。

John老師想起 iPhone 剛出來那幾年的打火機 app、倒啤酒 app。超無聊,可是每個人都下載了。現在有 AI,人人都能 vibe coding,動手做的年代又回來了。

這種東西怎麼用英文聊?不用解釋。Show it, don't tell it. 筆電轉過去說一句 "Check this app out." 同事是 I 人不太講話?"I dare you to slap my Mac."

不過阿鍵老師提醒,台灣辦公室中午大家都在趴睡,這時候讓它叫出來⋯⋯你自己斟酌。

16 歲的泰國女生,吼贏全美國

John老師放給阿鍵老師聽的時候,阿鍵老師以為這聲音是二、三十歲、有點歷練的歌手。結果是 16 歲。

Nene Royal,普吉島來的吉他手兼主唱,拿下《America's Got Talent》第 21 季冠軍和一百萬美元獎金,是第一位奪冠的泰國人。她唱的還是搖滾和金屬,對 Gen Z 來說根本是小眾。現在滿街都是 hip hop,連 K-pop 都在 rap,聽搖滾長大的 John老師很期待來一波 revival。

阿鍵老師注意到的是另一件事。一路贊助她的 CP Group 就是泰國正大集團,在台灣叫卜蜂,超市雞肉包裝上那個 CP。奪冠後,集團資深董事長家族送了她們一家一戶曼谷的公寓。好老闆。

開場白很簡單:"Did you see the winner on America's Got Talent?" 同事愛聽搖滾,或剛好是泰國人,這題穩贏,他可能比你還熟。

另外三則,挑你有感的聊

名古屋亞運。 為了省錢沒蓋選手村,選手分住飯店、臨時組合屋,還有四千人住在郵輪上,抱怨多到市長出面道歉。當年台北辦世大運,我們對自己超挑剔,結果日本也會出包。不追賽事的人,聊「選手沒得好睡、沒得好吃」一樣聊得起來。

Nike。 待了快 18 年的 S&P 100,被踢出去了。John老師的比喻很台灣:想像 0050 哪天把一檔老牌權值股剔除。股價從 2021 年高點跌掉近八成,大中華區營收連八季下滑,大家腳上換成 On 和 HOKA。我們是穿 Nike 長大的,現在 Just do it 在分析師嘴裡變成 just sell it。

瑞士冰川。 當地監測網 GLAMOS 的數字:今年一年融掉 5.5%,史上第二高,五年下來少了將近兩成,跟今年夏天歐洲的熱浪完全對得上。融化的冰現在還能補上夏天的用水,可是冰沒了,水也就沒了。

John老師從小就很喜歡一位英國作家 Roald Dahl，今天我們聊到了這位作家一部跨越五十年的三個電影改編版本，以及三位演員各自演出來的同一個角色：威利旺卡。透過介紹《Pure Imagination》這首歌，我們也聊到了一個很實際的問題：大人的快樂到底是什麼？答案可能比你想的簡單很多，一張沙發、一隻貓，或是一份剛炸好的薯條。

John has loved British author Roald Dahl since childhood, and today we discuss this author's three film adaptations spanning fifty years and three different actors each portraying the same character: Willy Wonka. Through introducing the song "Pure Imagination," we also discuss a very practical question: what is adult happiness anyway? The answer might be much simpler than you think—a sofa, a cat, or a freshly fried order of fries.

國際時事跟讀 Ep. L285: Trump-Xi Summit Heavy on Pomp, Light on Deals

Washington rolled out the red carpet last week as President Donald Trump hosted Chinese leader Xi Jinping for his first state visit to the US in more than a decade. Trump greeted Xi at the airport, a rare gesture, and later held a lavish state dinner attended by tech chiefs including Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Apple's Tim Cook. There, Trump toasted a future of "harmony, peace and success", while Xi insisted that artificial intelligence must remain "under human control".

Beneath the diplomatic niceties, however, old fault lines remained. Beijing wants Washington to stay out of its way on trade, technology and Taiwan, whereas Trump arrived hoping for deals on tariffs, rare earths and farm exports. Chinese state media reported that Xi had privately urged the US to handle Taiwan "with prudence". Tellingly, the two governments issued separate readouts rather than a joint statement, which Peter Alexander of Z-ben Advisors said showed both sides were "locked in a battle" over escalation dominance.

The deliverables that did emerge were modest. The two countries agreed to cut tariffs on $30 billion worth of each other's goods, and the US readout said China would buy at least 10 million metric tons of American coal a year in 2027 and 2028. They also plan to launch an AI dialogue within two months, although the US called the technology "Super Intelligence" while China stuck with "AI". The trade truce, meanwhile, was extended by just two months, far shorter than expected. Scott Kennedy of CSIS described the deliverables as "quite limited and tentative".

Taiwan appeared in neither official readout, which Kennedy took as a sign of no progress. A $14 billion arms package for the island has been on hold since May, when Xi warned the two countries could "collide or even enter into conflict"; Trump called it a "very good negotiating chip". The leaders will meet twice more this year, at Apec in Shenzhen in November and the G20 in Miami in December. Whether this fragile detente lasts, analysts warn, depends on more tangible outcomes.

英文學了八年、十年,文法考卷都能拿滿分,真的要開口卻卡住?問題可能不是你不夠努力,而是太努力了。🎧 「從聽到說的七封信」來到第四封,要聊的是為什麼我們一直推英文跟讀(shadowing),而不是別的方法。

台灣人學英文的毛病:太勤勞

聽起來很奇怪對吧?勤勞怎麼會是問題。

John老師說,我們從小相信勤勞才有回報,結果力氣全花在reading上。文法背得滾瓜爛熟,要講的時候腦袋卻先跳出「這句文法對嗎」,然後就卡住了。阿鍵老師補了一刀:我們太想找到正確答案,可是比起正確,更重要的是表達。

這種心態其實是從工作帶過來的。能加班就加班,最好短時間賺到最多,很社畜的邏輯。搬到學英文上,就變成「三個月變native speaker」,書店一整排90天速成、90天背完國高中單字。

反觀學中文的外國朋友,會很自在地說 I've been learning Chinese for eight years,然後可能才剛進入開口聊天的階段。因為他們把語言當興趣,想知道成吉思汗發生什麼事、想懂這個文化。我們呢?英文是加薪和考試的工具,學了八年沒加薪,就覺得自己是loser。

想練口說?那就開口

John老師搬出Elon Musk常講的first principle,第一原理。想練口說,答案單純到有點好笑:開口,不要再reading了。

跟讀就是這麼回事。聽到什麼就講出來,聽到CNN主播怎麼說,你就照著再說一遍,把自己套進主播的角色。不用等,沒有前置流程,開口的那一刻就已經在練習了。

John老師甚至說,願意這樣做的話,補習班和家教幾乎都可以省下來。

「可是我沒時間啊」

Don't lie。John老師直接點名:大家最近不是都在刷皮克敏嗎?

他說他老婆玩得很認真,種花、收割、整隊,光這些前置作業的時間就夠聽完一集、跟讀完兩個段落了。運動要暖身拉筋是怕受傷,但阿鍵老師說得好,你的耳朵跟舌頭應該沒那麼容易受傷,打開就能練。

所以台北捷運上滑手機的那幾站、早上刷牙的時間、晚上去河濱跑步的時候,都可以。竹科工程師開車塞在園區外面不方便看字,那就跟著聲音念幾句也行。

只有五分鐘,就練五分鐘,然後休息。通勤學英文本來就不需要坐在書桌前硬K一小時。

朗讀和跟讀,差在哪?

上一封信講朗讀,這一封講跟讀,為什麼要分先後?

朗讀是照你自己的tempo。內容還不熟,慢慢念、慢慢消化。跟讀就不一樣了,你要追上audio的速度,跟John老師同一個步調。這時候耳朵會被逼著聽細節:哪裡停頓、哪個字重、哪個字輕、語調怎麼走。

阿鍵老師說他自己練的時候,會不知不覺去辨識句子的結構。文法不是背下來的,是泡在裡面體會出來的。

想挑戰進階版?完全不預習,打開單集就直接跟。口譯社的人就是這樣每天燒腦練的。

前兩週會很累,這是正常的

老實說,一開始一定跟不上。嘴巴痠,腦袋燒得很快。John老師的回應是:Then it's working.

他拿重訓來比喻。第一次做兩個rep手就痠了,練一個禮拜可以做五個,再來十個、二十個。某天回頭看,才發現上個月還在苦苦追的速度,現在居然跟得上。想加難度,就像加重量一樣,從B2的內容拉到C1,或找語速更快的素材。

兩位老師的建議是先撐過前兩週的陣痛期,不要跟讀兩三天就說 I'm done。他們很樂意當健身房裡在旁邊吼 One more rep 的那個教練。

我們天天看到、早就習以為常的零食和日用品，在觀光客眼中可能是非帶不可的寶物。這集兩位老師從西門町出發，聊到方便分送的小包裝零食、韓國旅客特別愛的甜鹹組合，還有幾樣連台灣人聽了都會意外的熱門商品。John 老師也分享了自己以前回台灣必買的懷舊組合，最後還有適合送給家中長輩的大人系伴手禮?!

The snacks and everyday items we see every day and have grown accustomed to might be treasures that tourists simply must bring home. In this episode, the two teachers start from Ximen district and discuss small-packaged snacks perfect for gifting, sweet-and-salty combinations that Korean tourists particularly love, and several popular products that even Taiwanese people find surprising. John also shares the nostalgic combinations he used to buy whenever returning to Taiwan, and finally, there are sophisticated souvenirs suitable for elderly family members?!

早期在教英文時，John老師最常忽略的就是正餐。接案的人應該都懂，行程是別人給的。早上一堂課、下午趕另一場，中間能吃就吃，不能吃就撐到晚上。營養這種事，永遠排在待辦事項最後一個。

Omega-3 是身體自己做不出來的必需脂肪酸，一定要從食物來，可是我這種吃法，實在很難吃夠。所以我一直有在補魚油，只是以前買的不是膠囊大到卡喉嚨，就是吃完打嗝整天都是魚腥味，最後常常放到過期。

這次換成 Simply 新普利有橄平衡魚油，吃了一陣子，來跟大家分享實際感受。膠囊小，餐後配水吞兩顆，三秒解決。魚味問題也沒有出現，看了成分才發現它加了冷壓初榨橄欖油，Omega-3 跟 Omega-9 用二比一搭配，吃起來很順。順便教大家魚油的兩個英文：

- rTG 是魚油的型態，比較好吸收的那種。
- TOTOX 是總氧化值，數字越低代表越新鮮。

這款用阿拉斯加魚油，捕撈後兩小時內低溫冷壓，TOTOX 只有 1.7 到 2.8。另外還加了維生素 D3，幫助鈣吸收、維持骨骼健康。現在John老師會固定放一盒在包包，出門上課前吃掉。對我這種行程變動大的人來說，能持續才是重點。

The United States Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday for the first time in more than three years, lifting its benchmark range by 25 basis points to between 3.75 and 4 percent. The decision was unanimous, and it landed just weeks before midterm elections in which the cost of living ranks among voters' top concerns. Chair Kevin Warsh, whom Democratic lawmakers had once dismissed as a likely rubber stamp for the White House, called the move sober and responsible, arguing that inflation had been too high for too long.

The pressure had been mounting for months. Fuel costs have surged since the start of the war on Iran, with Brent crude hovering near $109 a barrel and diesel reaching a record average of $6.31 a gallon, roughly double its level a year ago. Because diesel moves the trucks that haul everything from vegetables to cement, those costs are expected to ripple through to prices more broadly. Consumer prices rose 0.4 percent in August, the sharpest monthly gain in four months, leaving annual inflation at 3.4 percent.

Markets were hardly caught off guard. Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) FedWatch had put the odds of a hike at 92.3 percent, up from 40 percent a week earlier, and once a move is priced in, as Tufts University economist Michael Klein observed, it stops being news. The politics were another matter. President Donald Trump, who has demanded that rates be cut to 1 percent or lower, posted in capital letters that borrowing costs should come down fast. He later said he still backed Warsh but described the Fed board as hostile and political.

Most policymakers expect one further increase before the year is out, and the Fed's own projections do not show inflation back at target until 2029. The European Central Bank tightened last week, a reminder that the war's price shock is not confined to America.
