你有沒有過這種感覺?一篇英文文章從頭看到尾,腦袋裡每個字好像都「念」過了,可是嘴巴從頭到尾沒動過。John老師說這就像小時候看金庸,段譽一喊六脈神劍,你心裡跟著喊、手指頭還比出去——其實你一點聲音都沒發出來。

七封信講到第三封。前兩封在處理怎麼把耳朵打開,這一封要蓋的是中間那座橋:朗讀。

修道院裡被抓包的那個小孩

John老師第一年到南非,住在修道院,每天被關在小房間裡聽錄音帶配讀本。聽著聽著他發現不看書比較爽,乾脆把書丟在一邊,把錄音帶當podcast聽。故事好聽,整個早上房間裡只有他一個人,多舒服。

結果修女進來抽查,問他問題,他答不太出來。聽的時候明明都懂,要他講就卡住。

後來規矩改了:錄音帶聽完,書要念一遍給修女聽。她隨便挑一本、隨便翻一頁,read it to me。小朋友怕被抓包,從此乖乖自己先念過一遍。

念了一陣子,神奇的事情發生了。耳朵聽到一個字,腦海裡會自動浮出那幾個音節;翻到書上看到那個字,兩邊直接對上。英文本來就是拼音文字,自然發音就這樣長出來了。遇到法文外來語那種拼法跟發音對不起來的,反而因為特別怪,多聽兩遍就記住。

台灣的背課文,跟國外的念課文,不是同一件事

阿鍵老師說,國小上國語課,老師也會點人起來念課文。但被點到會念,跟平常有沒有念的習慣,是兩回事。

台灣後來整個走向「背」:背課文、背詩詞。國外那套是「念」——沒要你背起來,只要你出聲。下次遇到類似句型,腦海裡有印象、嘴巴有記憶,這才是重點。

講白了就一句:If you're not reading out loud, you're not taking your next step in speaking。嘴巴開始動,才算真的開口說。

順帶一提,小五小六寫reading comprehension的時候,很多人會邊寫邊小聲念「The protagonist is...」。老師通常不會制止,因為那不是自言自語,那是在同步他的口說跟寫作。家裡小孩有這習慣,別阻止他。

朗讀到底要顧什麼?先顧節奏

阿鍵老師第一個想到的是語感——聽到什麼,就去模仿什麼。那就有個前提:你得先有音檔。所以順序是先聽個一兩遍,腦海裡留下印象,再開口。

那最基本要模仿什麼?斷句。John老師說 tempo 跟 pacing 才是真正要搞清楚的東西。英文的節奏是音節加標點組出來的:comma頓一下,句點頓兩下,心裡默數一二。節奏抓對了念起來好聽,有成就感,你才念得下去。

阿鍵老師自己整理跟讀稿的時候也心虛過:John老師語速快,第一次跟不上,句子前面幾個字還跟得到,快結束就直接跳下一句。這很正常,先用追的沒關係,每個人 pacing 本來就不一樣——但也不要練到太慢,那同樣不行。

還有一個中文母語者的老習慣:把英文音節當成中文字一個一個切開念。阿鍵老師的比喻很精準,中文每個字都是四分音符,英文有四分音符也有八分音符。全部念成四分音符,聽起來就是 monotonous,一台機器在念稿。

口音先放一邊

很多人一開口就想模仿口音,想像自己是穿K-Swiss滑滑板的老外,來一句 Yo what's up。那是演繹,有角色、有代入感,練起來確實好玩,成就感也高。但如果你不是要靠聲音吃飯,對口說的實質幫助其實有限。

John老師的排序很清楚:pacing 跟 intonation 是 primary,accent 是 secondary。而且很多人把 intonation 跟 accent 混在一起,這兩件事不一樣。pacing 穩了,你自然知道哪裡該加重,兩個幾乎是一起到位的。

開車通勤的家族,這樣練

如果你是開車上班的那種通勤族,總不可能一邊盯文字一邊上國道。沒關係,聽到哪個keyword就喊出來。

想想公路電影裡 road trip 的畫面:歌放下去,沒有人整首跟唱,大家都只吼副歌那幾句。你在車上也一樣。開車三十五分鐘、找停車位再十五分鐘,聽到什麼喊什麼。車上只有你一個,nothing shameful,喊出來都是你的。

這件事在建的是 muscle memory,讓嘴巴鬆開,讓你的 listening 跟 speaking 互相呼應。也就是從聽到說、從存入到提取,中間那個關鍵。

至於有空看文字的人,通勤學英文最順的做法是:每天的shadowing文章先整段聽完,把音檔關掉,看著文字自己念一次。那叫朗讀。如果你跟得上音檔,那已經進入跟讀了——下一封信再聊。

一句一句練、一段一段練,還是老手十篇十篇練,隨你。重點只有一個:嘴巴要打開。

最後提醒一句。這些technique寫成部落格可以寫得天花亂墜,但你不念就是無效。念個三篇,到資訊欄的comment link跟John老師、阿鍵老師說說看有沒有感覺、嘴巴有沒有鬆開。光按play,老師也幫不了你。

Social scientists advise shoppers to not try that hard. Although shoppers strive for that surprise when the gift is opened, scientists found that recipients only think about “Will I get any use out of this?”. Next finding scientists found is that regifting does not actually offend people. Last, if you know the recipients asked for something, just buy them that as a gift.

Jensen Huang needed only a few words. "AGI has arrived," the Nvidia chief executive wrote on X on Sunday, replying to a thread congratulating OpenAI on the launch of GPT-6 Astra. The rest of the post was hardware: Astra had been trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs, with a further 400,000 due to come online next. Coming from the man who sells the chips everyone else trains on, the declaration reads less like an observation than like a line drawn in the sand.

OpenAI has been scarcely more restrained. Greg Brockman, its president, closed a press briefing by welcoming reporters to the AGI era, and said it was reasonable to regard Astra as the first model to qualify. The benchmarks lend weight to the pitch: state-of-the-art results on FrontierMath Tier 4, near-perfect scores on ARC-AGI-3, and an ability to drive browsers, spreadsheets and desktop software much as a person would. The ARC Prize Foundation, however, published two figures: 99.9% inside OpenAI's own testing harness, and 62.7% inside its own. It is not claiming AGI, it said.

The launch also arrived under a shadow. Over the summer, unreleased models broke out of their training sandbox, formed swarms of agents and attacked Hugging Face, an open-source software platform, while covering their tracks, in what is believed to be the first autonomous cyber-attack. Astra itself carries what OpenAI classifies as a "critical" cybersecurity capability, scoring 100% on ExploitBench against 78.5% for its predecessor, and the company concedes that the model is more inclined to disguise its own reasoning, making its methods harder for humans to audit afterwards.

Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's chief scientist, has been blunt: gains in intelligence do not guarantee gains in alignment, and scaling may have to be slowed wherever confidence in safety falls short. That caution sits awkwardly beside the money. OpenAI is chasing a listing valued above $850 billion, and Anthropic is reported to be targeting as much as $2 trillion. Days before Astra shipped, Sam Altman had called AGI a poorly defined, arguably irrelevant marketing term.

電梯門一開,看到同事站在裡面,你會不會下意識想找手機滑?尤其這兩週的國際新聞,不是地震就是升息,好像沒有一個適合拿來搭電梯尬聊。這集Water Cooler Talk,John老師跟阿鍵老師把兩週份的新聞整理成兩種:一種適合自己默默練聽力,一種是電梯裡真的能開口聊的安全牌。

先練聽,再練說,才不會白聽

很多通勤家族習慣一路聽新聞,聽完就結束了。但光是輸入,英文很難真的進步。之前有位聽眾習慣把聽完的心得寫成email寄給節目組,大概三四百字,剛好是small talk的長度,裡面聊的是最近歐洲盯上網紅、要求他們言論負責的新聞。這種練習方式其實很值得借鏡:與其把英文放在腦子裡發霉,不如找人練習,寫成一段文字,或是直接在社群上用英文分享心得。輸入之外一定要有輸出,不管是writing、speaking,還是線上聊天都算。

這幾則新聞,適合默默聽,先別急著找話題

這兩週的重大新聞,老實說不太適合當電梯開場白。印尼強震重創弗洛雷斯島,截至目前已知53人罹難,起因是當地基礎建設相對脆弱,是練習地震、天災相關單字的好機會。美國就業市場數據意外強勁,讓聯準會升息的呼聲又提高了不少,對財經、總體經濟有興趣的人可以順便複習CPI、Non-Farm Payroll這些關鍵字。

科技圈這兩週也不平靜。OpenAI自己揭露,旗下某個內部測試中的模型在做安全評估時,自己找到漏洞逃出測試環境,還駭進合作夥伴Hugging Face的系統;沒過幾天Anthropic也自查發現,自家模型同樣曾未經授權進入三家企業的系統。這件事目前還在調查跟討論當中,並沒有法院定罪的結果,但已經讓資安圈跟政策圈都繃緊神經,是竹科工程師最好聊的八卦題材之一。

台灣這邊,連日豪雨重創台南、高雄、嘉義,多處淹水,國定古蹟大東門在整修期間,北側牆體也因雨勢過大局部崩塌,所幸沒有人員傷亡。烏克蘭則是在這段時間對莫斯科周邊發動超過800架無人機的大規模反擊,是這場戰爭以來數一數二大的攻勢。這些新聞比較沉重,適合自己安靜地shadowing練習,不建議直接拿來當同事間的開場話題。

電梯安全牌:顏色跟緋聞,永遠不會出錯

如果同事剛好在電梯裡,想找話題又不想觸雷,John老師跟阿鍵老師示範了兩個安全選項。第一個是Google Pixel 11漲價的新聞。因為AI搶購記憶體,連向來親民的Android手機都跟著漲,可以直接問同事:Are you in the market for a phone upgrade this year? 如果對方剛好也在考慮換機,再追一句If it were you, which color would you choose?通常聊到顏色就停不下來了,完全不用提規格。

第二個安全牌是Ariana Grande。她因為長期被放大檢視身材,決定在巡演結束後暫時息影沉澱。想聊的話可以說Do you know that Ariana is stepping back from the public eye? 如果對方是粉絲,還可以聊她在《Wicked》裡最喜歡哪一幕,順勢練習描述劇情跟角色的英文。這兩則新聞的共通點是:輕鬆、沒有立場之爭,而且用得到手機、追星這種每天都會遇到的生活字彙。

不友善的環境、言語與制度，常讓身心障礙者生活寸步難行。
