你在國小或國中,是不是也寫過一封信給十年後的自己?「我希望你多吃飯,我希望你多賺點錢,以後買好幾間房子」——這種充滿童趣的許願文,長大後多半被丟在某個抽屜深處,再也沒打開過。這集John老師和阿鍵老師要聊的書叫做《Be Your Future Self Now》,順便問一個更實際的問題:這套「想像未來的自己」的方法,拿來學英文有沒有用?

這本書在講什麼

作者Benjamin Hardy是一位組織心理學家,平常的工作是幫企業做組織整合,自己也寫了不少跟自我成長有關的書。他這本書的核心概念很簡單:與其被過去的自己推著走,不如讓未來的自己拉著你往前。

John老師提到,南非的高中作業也有類似的練習——寫一封信給20歲、30歲、40歲的自己。回頭看那封信才發現,現在40歲的自己,跟當年寫的完全不一樣。以前覺得自己不會回台灣、會生一堆小孩、週末都在露營,結果現在只想窩在家裡睡覺。阿鍵老師倒是提醒了一句重點:有沒有活成當初想像的樣子,跟有沒有走在那條路上,其實是兩回事。

從想像到行動,中間差了一個「身份認同」

Benjamin Hardy的方法不是叫你做白日夢,而是有一套具體的進程:先定義你想成為的人,這個未來的自己會慢慢變成你的身份認同,身份認同會帶動你的日常行為,行為累積久了,就會產生對應的結果。講白一點,就是你要先「相信自己是那樣的人」,行為才會跟著改變。

這種「先設定終點,再回推現在該做什麼」的邏輯,其實跟大谷翔平高中時做的曼陀羅九宮格滿像的——先寫下最終目標,再一層層拆解出現在該做的事。差別在於Benjamin Hardy更強調「身份」這一關:不是為了達成目標而硬做,而是因為你已經把自己當成那個人了。

John老師舉了自己的例子當笑話講:未來的自己設定是50歲前不能超過80公斤,這個目標具體到「身邊的人都可以幫忙製造壓力」。想清楚80公斤的自己每天會不會運動,現在就照著做,身份認同就有了施力點。

那跟學英文有什麼關係

阿鍵老師和John老師把這套邏輯直接搬到語言學習上。很多人學英文卡住,不是因為文法不會,而是心裡一直有個聲音說「我英文很爛」——這句話本身,就已經變成你現在的身份認同了。

Benjamin Hardy的解法是反過來想:想像自己50歲的時候,已經去過四五十個國家,用英文跟無數朋友聊天。當你把「未來能流利說英文的自己」刻畫得夠清楚,就可以問自己一句話——一個自信的英文使用者,今天會怎麼做?會不會主動開口跟外國同事聊兩句?會不會把通勤時間拿來聽15分鐘的podcast,而不是滑手機?

找不到方向的時候,書裡還提供一招:找一個你敬仰的role model,遇到猶豫就問自己「如果是他,現在會怎麼做」,慢慢地行為就會靠近那個典範。

重點是重複,不是一次到位

兩位老師也提醒,身份轉換不會一次成功,失敗很正常。Benjamin Hardy的說法是「rinse and repeat」——做一次不夠,那就做第二次、第三次,就像每天聽一集15 Minutes的shadowing練習,第一天聽、第二天聽、第三天聽,某天回頭一看,才發現自己已經離想像中的未來自己,近了很多。

The Great East Gate, also known as Yingchun Gate, stands as a proud symbol of Tainan's rich heritage and is one of the largest surviving city gates in the nation. This historic structure previously suffered a massive collapse due to extreme rainfall back in 1960. It was eventually rebuilt in 1975 using reinforced concrete methods that were common at the time. Recognizing that the aging concrete had developed concerning structural flaws over the past fifty years, the city government officially launched a comprehensive restoration project last November to properly preserve this cherished architectural treasure for future generations.

The sheer weight of the accumulated moisture eventually overwhelmed the side wall, sending tons of unstable soil and heavy metal scaffolding violently crashing down onto the occupied traffic lanes below.

《The ABCs of How We Learn》中文版翻成《學習的26種方法》,作者是史丹佛大學教育學院院長Daniel Schwartz,跟兩位研究員Jessica Tsang、Kristen Blair合著。書的架構很有意思,從A到Z,26個英文字母各對應一種有科學根據的學習方法,內容脫胎自史丹佛一門很受歡迎的課。書不算新,但一直是學習類書籍榜上的常客。

John老師老實說,整本書都值得看,但他們平常看書比較沒耐心,所以這集挑了兩個字母,分享打到他們的部分——一個是G,一個是C。

G is for Generation:主動講出來,比想到完美答案更重要

John老師講到台灣人學語言最常卡住的地方:我們太習慣找「完美答案」。理工科訓練太扎實,數理有標準答案,所以我們會不自覺地期待語言也該有一個正確版本,講不出來就乾脆不講。

但書裡的G講的是「generation」——與其被動輸入,不如主動生成。原文說要emphasize active production over passive input,這句話直接打到John老師。他的邏輯很簡單:被動輸入有瓶頸,主動輸出卻沒有上限。你講了,才知道自己哪裡卡;你講錯了,大不了修正,又不會被抓去關。

這也是為什麼他們一直強調shadowing跟讀的重要——聽到什麼馬上跟著說出來,訓練大腦同步處理聽跟說。不用坐在書桌前硬背句型,通勤時間跟著podcast一句一句跟讀,反而更接近這本書講的「主動生成」。開口這件事,真的不花你一毛錢。

C is for Contrasting Cases:喝過一次好咖啡,你就回不去了

阿鍵老師選的是C,contrasting cases,關鍵在於「透過察覺差異來學習」。他舉了一個很生活化的例子:如果你沒喝過手沖咖啡,可能會覺得星巴克已經很好喝了。但喝過一次品質很高的手沖咖啡之後,再回去喝星巴克,你會發現原來香氣沒那麼豐富,甜味反而是靠糖漿撐出來的。有了比較,你才抓得到差異在哪裡。

John老師接著分享自己的親身經驗。他學中文回台灣後,講「龜裂」被一堆人糾正說要唸「龜裂」,他當下滿頭問號:明明字就是「龜」,為什麼要唸另一個音?他沒有像多數人一樣「別人說是這樣就是這樣」,而是直接問身邊懂的人「why」。阿鍵老師補充,這其實也對應到書裡另外兩個字母——T是Teaching,你教別人的時候自己會學得更深;U是Undoing,則是修正錯誤觀念。多問、多分享,你才會把那個「龜裂」牢牢記下來。

這也呼應了他們常提的費曼技巧(Feynman Technique):如果你能把一個概念講到讓國中生都聽懂,代表你真的學會了。書裡有句話John老師特別喜歡——教別人,等於把自己再學一次。從主動生成到主動分享,是同一條路上的兩個階段。

The shaking began just before six on Saturday morning, while much of Flores was still asleep. The magnitude 7.7 earthquake, only ten kilometres deep, ruptured the seabed off the island's north coast. In Ruteng, hospital ceilings caved in and patients were moved outside into tents. At a Catholic seminary in Sikka, an assembly hall roof collapsed during morning Mass, sending students and nuns scrambling into the open. By Sunday, Indonesian authorities had put the death toll at 53, with more than a hundred injured and some 5,000 people displaced.

What sent villagers running uphill was not the shaking so much as what lives on in local memory. In 1992, a quake of the same magnitude struck the same water and triggered a tsunami that killed about 2,500 islanders. So when the sea visibly drew back on Saturday, residents near the epicentre did not wait to be told. The tsunami warning was lifted three hours later, once monitors detected no dangerous rise in sea level. Indonesia sits astride the Pacific Ring of Fire, among the most seismically exposed countries on earth.

The rescue effort has been shaped less by the quake than by the terrain. Landslides severed sections of the Trans-Flores Highway, a 700-kilometre artery through mountainous country, leaving three of the worst-hit regencies cut off for more than a day. Search teams reached them only on Sunday, some arriving by ferry. "We have cleared most landslides and reopened roads to previously isolated villages," said Fathur Rahman, who heads the search-and-rescue office in Maumere, though communication blackouts and power cuts continued to hamper the work.

Relief has begun to trickle in: 50,000 aid packages weighing 275 tonnes, at least five helicopters, a naval vessel and a fourteen-day emergency response across the province. Even so, monitors logged close to a thousand aftershocks by Sunday afternoon, and thousands spent a second night under tarpaulins rather than return to houses left standing but no longer trusted. "The shaking was terrifying, so intense that my house nearly collapsed," one farmer told the Associated Press. Officials cite the same mix behind the full shelters: aftershocks, damaged homes and the memory of 1992.
