This episode discusses the book by Tom Rath called "Life's Great Question". If you struggle to understand life's meaning then give this episode a listen! The most important part of this book, in my opinion, is the distinction made between finding life's purpose versus life's contribution.
This Book in 3 Sentences
Rather than finding your passion, we should focus on finding our contributions. In order to find our contributions, we must understand ourselves, our personality, and our motivators. Once we have truly introspected ourselves, we can remove our centered, dogmatic approach to life and truly discover the meaning of life through contributions to your team, your relationships, and yourself.
Impressions
- This was, like a lot of books, self-intuitive but well understood. It involved concepts we know already but approaches it with a new light in order for us to truly observe the intuitive nature of contributions.
- Part 1 was good at helping the reader understand what life’s meaning is really about. It is not about us. It is not this perceived self-centered approach where we keep asking “what is my passion??”, but it more-so helps the reader understand that contribution to others and self is key to a meaningful life.
- Part 2 is an interactive, introspective structure to understanding what is your main 3 of the 12 contribution types. Once you understand what your main three are, you can listen to decent and sound advice on how to contribute to your team, your relationships, and yourself better.
- In my opinion, this section was nothing ground breaking, a little redundant, and self-explanatory. It was intuitive and simple, but perhaps too simple because the advice was much like any other advice (eat right, focus on sleep, etc.). I will admit, the best advice is simple. This is the best advice, but I guess I was a little disappointed to see that none of the advice was anything new to me. That being said, it could be new to you or become a refresher for you. Perhaps my disappointment is inappropriate, and I should see this as exciting that the knowledge is repetitive and sticking to me.
Who Should Read This Book?
Someone who is open-minded, looking for their life’s “purpose” and someone who does not know to make this important distinction between purpose and contributions to make a meaningful life.
