Elie Wiesel este un scriitor de origine evreiască, născut în România, în anul 1928.

Este, de asemenea, activist politic, profesor și laureat al Premiului Nobel.

Este considerat un scriitor extrem de prolific, deoarece a scris peste 50 de cărți.

Tatăl său i-a insuflat concepte umaniste, iar mama sa ideile credinței evreiești.

Localitatea românească Sighet a trecut în anul 1940 sub autoritatea maghiară, iar patru ani mai târziu, pe când Wiesel avea 15 ani, el și familia sa au fost mutați într-unul dintre cele două ghetouri ale orașului pe perioada celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial.

Mai târziu, în același an, guvernul maghiar a permis forțelor armate germane să deporteze evreii din Sighet în infamul și abominabilul Lagăr de exterminare Auschwitz.

Wiesel și tatăl său au fost separați de mamă și cele trei surori, și trimiși la Buna, un sub-lagăr care aparținea lagărului de concentrare.

Deoarece războiul era pe sfârșite, el și tatăl său au fost mutați în trei lagăre, în condiții deplorabile, reușind să stea împreună mai mult de opt luni.

Cu doar câteva săptămâni înainte ca deținuții să fie eliberați de armata Statelor Unite, tatăl său a fost bătut de gardieni și a suferit de extenuare, inaniție și dizenterie.

Acesta obișnuia să fie bătut și de alți deținuți care îi luau hrana.

Două dintre surorile lui Wiesel au reușit să supraviețuiască lagărului de concentrare și s-au reîntâlnit cu acesta după război, într-un orfelinat din Franța.

După cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial, Wiesel a primit cetățenia israeliană și a lucrat o perioadă ca profesor de cor, înainte de a deveni jurnalist.

Elie Wiesel is a Jewish writer who was born in Romania in 1928.

He is also a political activist, professor, and Nobel Laureate.

As the author of more than fifty books, he is an extremely prolific writer.

His father instilled a sense of humanism while his mother promoted their Jewish faith.

The Romanian town of Sighet fell to Hungary in 1940, and four years later when Wiesel was fifteen years old, he and his family were relocated to one of the town's two Jewish ghettos during World War II.

Later that same year, the Hungarian government let the German armed forces deport the Jews in Sighet to the infamous and abominable Auschwitz concentration camp.

Wiesel and his father were separated from his mother and three sisters and sent to Buna, an attached sub-camp of the concentration camp.

He and his father were shuffled among three camps in deplorable condition as the end of the war approached, managing to stay together for over eight months.

Just weeks before the inmates were liberated by the United States Army, his father was beaten by the guards as he suffered from exhaustion, starvation, and dysentery.

Also some of the other inmates beat him to take his food.

Two of his sisters also survived the concentration camp and were reunited with Wiesel after the war at an orphanage in France.

Following World War II, he became a Hebrew and choir teacher for a time before becoming a journalist.

For a decade following the war, he refused to write about his experiences in the Holocaust, but a friend later persuaded him to do so, and it was his memoir Night that won him the Nobel Peace Prize.
