Bucharest is Romania's capital city, and as such, it is also the country's financial, industrial, and cultural center.
It's situated on the Dambovita River, although in its centuries-long history, it has never served as a port city.
There are lots of things to do and see in Bucharest, including a number of iconic landmarks and monuments.
One of the most salient is the Palace of the Parliament, which was erected in the 1980s and is the world's biggest parliament building.
In addition to the Romanian parliament, the building also houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. It also holds one of the world's biggest convention centers.
Bucharest is also home to The Triumphal Arch, which was constructed in 1935.
Paris's Arc de Triomphe was the archetype for the arch.
Another cardinal landmark in the city is the Memorial Rebirth, which is a marble pillar that was revealed in 2005.
The abstract pillar was built to remember the sacrifices made by the victims of the Romanian Revolution of 1989, which was when Communism was toppled.
When the monument was unveiled, it stirred up disputes among Romanians, who derided it by giving it derogatory names like "the olive on the toothpick."
Some believed that the selection of the design was politically motivated and complained that it did not fit in with its surroundings.
Bucharest is also home to the Romanian Athenaeum, which most consider to be a symbol of the nation's culture.
In 2007, it was awarded the Label of European Heritage Sites.

Sighisoara is located in Romania's Mures County on the Tarnava Mare River in Transylvania.
The city is a popular destination for tourists because of its historic city center.
UNESCO inscribed the city center as a World Heritage City in 1999 for its preservation of the dying culture of the Transylvanian Saxons.
Sighisoara's monuments and architecture will soon be the only remnants of the culture, according to UNESCO.
The organization also named the city as a superlative exemplification of a small citadel lying along the frontier between Central Europe's more Latin-disposed culture and Southeast Europe's Byzantine-Orthodox societies.
UNESCO believes the architecture that still exists in Sighisoara today is threatened by the continued Saxon emigration and the social stratum that upheld the area's praxes.
The city's most iconic landmark is the Clock Tower, which was built during the Thirteenth Century.
Among the places in Sighisoara that are common tourist attractions is the Sighisoara Citadel, which dates from the Twelfth Century and is a World Heritage site that is located in the city center.
    It's currently still occupied.
The Covered Staircase is also a draw for tourists.
It's an ancient stone staircase that's capped by a wooden roof and leads up to the Church on the Hill and its cemetery.
The Church on the Hill features a crypt and a number of frescos.
It sits where a Roman fort once stood.
Sitting contiguous to the church is one of the city's Lutheran cemeteries.
Tourists also often visit the Weapon Museum, which is located next to Vlad the Impaler's birthplace and showcases a variety of medieval weapons.

Stavropoleos Church, which was known as Stavropoleos Monastery before the monastery was dissolved, was constructed in 1724 while Nicolae Mavrocordat was on the throne.
Greek Archimandrite Ioanichie Stratonikeas initially built an inn there, and later within the inn's precinct, he built the monastery and church.
The income from the inn served to maintain the church and monastery.
The church was done in the Brancovenesc architectural style, which is characterized by a combination of Baroque, Byzantine, Ottoman, and late Renaissance styles.
Its edifice also combines styles from the Romanian Orthodox Christian tradition with the Ottoman Empire's Islamic architectural style.
The annexes to the monastery and the inn were demolished toward the end of the 1800s.
Repeated earthquakes in the area had a deleterious effect on the remaining structure, and as a result, the dome collapsed.
However, restoration work on the paintings on the dome in the early 1900s was able to preserve them.
Today the only part of the original monastery that still stands is the church.
There's also a newer building next to it that houses a library, a collection of sacerdotal icons, a conference room, and some parts of paintings that were extricated from churches that were obliterated during the Communist regime.
The other building was constructed in the early 1900s.
The nuns at Stavropoleos Church are very involved in restoring ancient books and icons.
Also the church choir is known for being one of only a few church choirs in Romania that perform neo-Byzantine music, which features one voice that's sustained by what's referred to as a "tonic note" in accompaniment.

The Painted Monasteries are located in the northeastern part of Romania in Bucovina.
The outer walls of these eight churches are covered in elaborate and intricate frescoes dating from the late Fifteenth to Sixteenth Centuries.
The paintings are effigies of prophets and saints, portrayals of scenes from Jesus' life, depictions of demons and angels, and representations of heaven and hell.
UNESCO added seven of the Painted Monasteries to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1993 and the eighth in 2010.
The frescoes are adjudged Byzantine masterpieces and have been well-preserved over the centuries.
The paintings on the walls of the monasteries are not isolated, separate pieces but rather are systematically and punctiliously done to illustrate full story cycles.
They tell stories from the Bible and from the lives of some of Orthodoxy's most important saints through images.
The frescoes cover all of the facades of the churches, and UNESCO calls them a "homogeneous artistic phenomenon." The Painted Monasteries and their murals are the quintessential example of Moldavian church construction and decoration from the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries.
The eight churches are the Beheading of St. John the Baptist Church in Arbore, which was built in 1502; the Dormition of the Mother of God Church in Manastirea Humorului, which was built in 1530; the Annunciation Church in Vatra Moldovitei, which was erected in 1532; the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church in Patrauti, which was constructed in 1487; St, Nicholas Church in Probota, which was built in 1530; St. George Church in Suceava, which was built in 1522; St. George Church in Voronet, which was constructed in 1488; and Resurrection Church in Sucevita (which is located [...]

Sinaia is a resort and town located in Romania's Prahova County.
It gets its name from Sinaia Monastery, as the town emanated from the monastery, naturally growing up around it.
The monastery was denominated for the Mount Sinai named in the Bible.
Because of its close proximity to the Bucegi Mountains, Sinaia is popular among skiers and fans of other winter sports.
It is also one of the most well-known and oldest mountain resorts, and some call it "The Pearl of the Carpathians."
The mountain resort has been there since at least 1869, as that is the earliest allusion to it in official documents.
At that time, the first hotel in Sinaia was built.
Sinaia is situated in the area of Bucegi Natural Park, and compulsory protections are in place to prevent diminution of the flora in the region.
It is forbidden to cut down trees or pick any of the mountain plants.
Picking several plants can result in major sanctions.
The protected plants are the Mountain Peony, the Yellow Gentiana, and the Edelweiss.
Camping is also restricted to designated areas, and Mountain Police patrol the area to enforce the laws.
Also near Sinaia is the alder-tree grove botanical reservation, which is protected by the Bucharest Biology Institute and the Romanian Academy.
UNESCO also lends its patronage to a separate research station focused on ecology in the area, which is the University of Bucharest's Jacques-Yves Cousteau Center.
This research station also houses a museum for the fauna of the Bucegi Mountains inside a lab that's designed to protect nature.

Mamaia is a resort town situated between the Black Sea and Lake Suitghoil in Romania's Constanta district just northeast of the city center.
Many consider the resort to be the country's most popular resort, and almost no one lives there year-round.
Mamaia is mostly inhabited over the summer months, generally between early June and the first part of September, although the resort starts seeing some tourists as early as May and the water there doesn't start to turn cold until late in the fall months.
Public transportation connects Constanta with Mamaia.
Also traveling between the southern part of the resort into the city center is easy via the Telegondola, which also offers picturesque views of the vistas in and around the resort.
The main attraction to Mamaia is the beach, so people don't generally spend a lot of time sightseeing as they're predominantly on the beach relaxing and participating in recreational activities on the water.
The resort is the only one in Europe which has the pure white sandy beaches that are enjoyed in places like Hawaii and other equatorial destinations.
There are also a lot of bars and clubs at Mamaia for those who like to savor the nightlife with reveling, drinking, and dancing.
Additionally, the Aqua Magic Water Park offers visitors more water fun with water slides and other diversions and amusements.
A ferry is also available to take beachgoers to Ovidia Island, which is located in Siutghiol Lake and can be accessed via the Telegondola.

    ----Formal English----
The Danube Delta is Europe's second biggest and best-preserved river delta.
Most of the delta is in Romania's Tulcea County, although a small part of it lies in Ukraine.
It took thousands of years for the Danube Delta to evolve to its present state, although geologists say that most likely forty percent of it was built over the last millennium.
It started to form in one of the Black Sea's bays at some point after 4000 BC when the sea climbed to the level it is at currently.
Because of a barrier that blocked the Danube Bay, the river started to deposit sediment into the bay.
Over time, the bay was filled up, and the delta began to grow larger and advance outside the estuary at some point after 3500 BC.
The delta built a number of lobes and continued to grow, adding internal lobes inside the lagoons and lakes that lay along its periphery.
Erosion, exacerbated by deforestation in the Danube basin, caused the delta area to dilate even further.
Toward the end of the Twentieth Century, dams were built on the Danube and its tributaries, causing a major deficit in sediment.
Contemporaneously, a network of channels was built, which helped attenuate that deficit on the delta but worsened erosion along the coastline.
There are three major branches that feed into the Danube Delta.
They are the Chilia, Sulina, and Saint George distributaries.
The Sulina and Saint George distributaries run out of the Chilia and continue as one channel before breaking off from each other.
New land gradually formed at each channel's mouth, creating the delta and its many lobes.

    ----Formal English----
Corvin Castle is a large and imposing structure located in the town of Hunedoara in Romania.
It's one of Europe's biggest castles and is on the list of Romania's top seven wonders.
John Hunyadi ordered the construction in 1446 as he wanted to transmute the structure that had once been used as a keep by Charles I of Hungary into a sumptuous home.
The property was initially given to his father by Hungarian King Sigismund as severance.
The architectural style of Corvin Castle is a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance.
It features tall, strong towers for defense, bastions, a double wall flanked by towers, a drawbridge, and an inner courtyard.
The double wall and towers were considered to be an architectural ingenuity for Transylvania at the time of the castle's construction.
Some of the towers feature large windows for big weapons and were built exclusively for defense purposes, while others were erected to hold prisoners.
The castle is segmented into three main sections, which are the circular stairway, the Knights' Hall, and the Diet Hall.
The halls are paved with marble and rectangular in shape and were used to hold ceremonies and banquets.
The roofs of the different parts of the castle are diverse in color, and there's a myriad of windows and balconies that have intricate stone carvings on them.
During the Seventeenth Century, some sections were added to the castle, with some having purposes that were solely aesthetic in nature and others serving as further fortification of the castle as a stronghold.
