LUCAS: Estuvo buenísimo todo. De primera la carne, ¿eh?
ESTEBAN: ¿Usted vio? Voy a comprar siempre ahí ahora.

Hi! How's everything going? Around here, throughout Spain, we've gone from a mild January (with almost spring-like temperatures) to a truly wintry February, cold, as pertains to this season. Well, today I'm going to talk to you about Carnival, the celebration of which is nearing its end. As in any part of the word, Carnival in Spain is celebrated during the weeks prior to Holy Week. Here, however, the way of celebrating Carnival is rather distinct, depending on the specific region or town, though in general they have in common a costume and street party.
On the Canary Islands, for example, the celebrations are much like the Oh so famous Carnival of Brazil: parades, dance, Carnival Queens... In Cádiz, what's most noteworthy are the 'murgas' and brass bands: groups of people that dress up in costumes of the same motif and dance to a kind of humorous and satyrical song called 'chirigota' (joke). In some towns, Carnival has more traditional roots, like the renown celebration of ' Os peliqueiros' in Laza (in Galicia), which is included among the oldest in the world. In this Carnival, various characters dressed in costumes and masks, which represent tax collectors, go around beating the audience with a whip, which they rebuke, even though they can't touch them.
In general, for all of these celebrations, people dress up in costumes, go out onto the street and celebrate it with their masquerades. There are parades, music, dance...
And this is it for today. If you can, search the internet for 'Os peliqueiros' and you'll see what an interesting Carnival it is. See you soon!
