Kapadokya

Kapadokya, baca şeklindeki kayalıklarıyla kolaylıkla tanınan Türkiye’de bir bölgedir. Bu şekiller milyonlarca yıl önce bölgede bulunan eski yanardağların patlaması sonucu oluşan tortul kayalık kalıntılarının birikimiyle oluşmuştur. Zamanla bu patlamalar kayalıkları aşındırmış ve bugün Kapadokya’nın kendine özgü olan minarelerini ve kolonlarını oluşturmuştur.

Kapadokya’da yerleşimler, evlerin ve kiliselerin kayaların içine doğru oyulduğu Antik Romalılar dönemine kadar uzanır. Bu oyuk evler bugünlerde insanların, o çağdaki yaşantıları gözlemlemek için ziyaret ettiği bir turizm yeri olmuştur. Göreme Açık Hava Müzesi, turistler için Türkiye’nin en ünlü yerlerinden biridir. Müzenin, Kapadokya’nın kayalıklarına doğru oyulmuş otuzun üzerinde şapeli ve kilisesi bulunmaktadır. Bu kiliselerin birkaçının duvarında inanılmaz freskler vardır. Bu fresklerden bazılarının tarihçesi 9. yüzyıla kadar uzanır.

Göreme’deki kayalıkların içine gömülü altı büyük kilise bulunur. Bunlardan en büyüğü 1980'li yıllarda restore edilen Tokalı Kilise’dir. Diğer kiliseler ise; Elmalı Kilise, Azize Barbara Kilisesi, Yılanlı Kilise, Karanlık Kilise ve Çarıklı Kilise’dir. Çarıklı Kilise'de, Kudüs’teki Göğe Yükseliş Kilisesi’ndekiyle aynı olduğu düşünülen iki ayak izi bulunmaktadır.

Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a region in Turkey that is easily recognized by its hoodoos.

These rock formations were formed over millions of years ago by the consolidation of sedimentary rocks created by the volcanic out-spurts.

Over time, these rock formations eroded until they became the famous chimney shaped trademarks of Cappadocia.

Earliest human settlements in Cappadocia date back to the Ancient Roman Period when shelters and churches were carved into these rock formations.

These carved settlements now are a tourist draw as people visit the area to see what life was like so far back in history.

The Goreme Open Air Museum is one of Turkey's most well-known destinations for tourists.

The museum includes over 30 chapels and churches that have been carved right out of the rocks at Cappadocia.

Some of these churches even have incredible frescoes on the walls inside of them.

Some of those frescoes date back to the ninth century.

There are about six major churches carved into the rocks at Gerome.

The largest is the Buckle Church, which was restored in the 1980s.

The other churches are the Apple Church, the Church of St. Barbara, the Snake Church, the Dark Church, and the Church with Sandals.

The Church with Sandals is interesting because it has two foot prints that are supposedly the same prints that are found in Jerusalem's Church of the Ascension.
