Journalist Don Shelby is a Minnesota Institution. His work for over 40 years as anchor, investigative reporter and environmental correspondent at WCCO-TV and WCCO-AM in the Twin Cities not only made him a household name, but a familiar face in living rooms across the Midwest. After retiring from WCCO, Don continued to pursue his passions, most recently as climate activist and environmental steward.

Sam, Jim and Sarah were delighted to sit with Don to partake in his wisdom, life stories, most memorable interviewees and sage advice for the next generation. The talk went so well, we made it into two parts! Join us this half as we tackle the idea of what it means to be a citizen in American today, why Americans have a duty to create “informed opinions” and Don’s personal transformation into a more curious and empathetic young man.

Authentic, real and endearing, Venus has forged a successful path ahead despite many challenges. Her life story will soon be chronicled in an upcoming memoir, “Trouble”, a work-in-progress glam-punk, trans-rock love story. We thoroughly enjoyed our chat, spanning some of our least favorite “household” creatures to shaping an identity in the ever-evolving music scene. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, emanating a natural warmth and charisma already so infectious on stage. The Legacy Matters crew tackles the bigger issues in life with our guest Dr. Carl Trovall, Associate Professor - Richard J. Dinda professor of Lutheran Identity and Mission at the College of Arts and Sciences at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. How can we find greater meaning in our lives and what role does - or can - religion play? An avid reader, educator and philosopher, Carl tackles otherwise serious issues with characteristic warmth and wit. Inclusive and welcoming, he challenges differing viewpoints by helping others strengthen the case of their argument in order to further the discussion. A wealth of knowledge, Carl relishes his role as Professor and mentor, sharing his teaching philosophy as he guides the next generation of learners. Carl is not only an intellectual powerhouse, but a family friend.

Learn more about Carl at Concordia University.

And, check out one of the books he will be teaching next semester (and one of Sarah’s favorites!) - Robert Caro’s LBJ biography, “Master of the Senate”. A must-read for any history buff.
