Jesus looked with compassion on the people of Israel as "harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." How did they come to be this way? When faced with the miracles of Jesus, the Pharisees accused Him of obtaining His power over demons through the prince of demons. Unable to accept Jesus for who He was or to explain away the reality of His miraculous works, they sought to attribute His power to Satan. In this sermon on Matthew 9:27-34, we see that all mankind still must come to terms with the person of Jesus Christ. Was He a demon, or is He the Messiah?

As we celebrate the incarnation of Christ at Christmas it is important that we remember how this event fits in to the larger context of the spiritual warfare between God and Satan. In Revelation 12 we are given a glimpse of this struggle and are reminded of how Christ is victorious and His people will be sustained by His power.

God the Son taking on flesh did not come as a Plan B after man’s failure to uphold the religious system they were entrusted with; even a cursory reading of the Old Testament reveals that redemptive history was always steadily marching towards the appearance of God’s Messiah who would bring salvation to His people.

What we see here in the first chapter of Luke’s Gospel is the revelation that this long-awaited moment had come – that He who made man would become man in a matter of months. The Messiah was soon to arrive.
