In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus gave a parable of a man who had been under demonic influence. The unclean spirit left him for a time, but later came back ,and finding the house put in order, it brought seven more spirits with it. The final state of the man was fare worse than before the spirit left him. The momentary relief was betrayed by much greater torment in the end.

Jesus said that this is what it was like for that generation in Israel. They had been given some relief from the demonic oppression and influence under the ministry of Jesus, yet in the end, after they rejected the Messiah, they would find themselves in a far worse spot than that in which they started.
