Boss #1:  Sapphiron

His hero power is 0 cost “Frost Breath” “Destroy all enemy minions that aren’t frozen.” There are two special cards.  The first one you start with it on the board, “Frozen Champion” he’s a 5 cost, 2/10  “Permanently Frozen.  Adjacent minions are immune to Frost Breath”.  The other card is “Pure Cold” it’s a 5 cost spell “Deal 8 damage to the enemy hero, and Freeze it”.  The card you get from defeating him is “Echoing Ooze” which is a 2 cost 1/2 minion “Battlecry:  Summon an exact copy of this minion at the end of the turn.”

2. Observer mode will come to Hearthstone, new expansion in development, co-op mode possible

Boss #1:  The shambling abomination Patchwerk

His hero power is 4 cost, destroy a minion.  He has a special weapon card called “Hook”, in normal mode it’s a 3 cost, 5 / 8 Deathrattle: Put this weapon into your hand.  In heroic mode it’s 3 cost 4 / 8, Windfury, Deathrattle: Put this weapon into your hand.  The card you get from beating him in normal mode is Undertaker (1 cost 1 /2 minon “Whenever you summon a minion with deathrattle gain +1 / +1”)

Boss #2:  Grobbulus

His hero power in normal mode is 2 cost “Deal 1 damage to all minions.  If any die summon a slime”.  In heroic mode his power is 0 cost “Deal 2 damage to all minions.  If any die summon a slime”. (Slime’s are 1 cost,

In the quarterly results, they specifically mention Hearthstone as one of the reasons that they did well and are looking forward to continued success.  …”the company was “very pleased” with the engagement of Hearthstone and its single-player adventure, Curse of Naxxramas.”

“The fact that last week was our strongest week ever for Hearthstone in terms of both revenue and engagement, I think is a really strong sign,” Morhaime said. “It’s important to note that we still have yet to bring the game to Android and iPhone devices, and if you look at the response we got from bringing Hearthstone to iPad, which brought in millions of new accounts on Battle.net, I think there’s a lot of engagement and opportunity around those platforms as well.”

Getting Better

Since much of the hype had calmed down around Naxxramas, although it picks up each week when a new wing is launched, I thought we need to get back to doing educational segments.

Main Segment: Naxxramas Wing #3 – Military Quarter

The third wing of Naxxramas has opened up.  Overall what are our thoughts at this stage of working through it?  Normal mode?  Heroic Mode?

Let’s look at each boss individually.

Boss #1: Instructor Razuvious

His hero power is “Deal 3 damage.” (Deal 4 damage in Heroic mode).  I beat him in normal with my Zoo deck.  I did finally beat him in Heroic but I forgot which deck I used. Reward: Dancing Swords (3 mana – 4 dmg / 4 health minion – Deathrattle: Your opponent draws a card)

Boss #2: Gothik the Harvester

His hero power is “Draw a card”  (Draw a card and gain 1 mana in heroic)  I also used my Zoo deck to clear this one out.

Reward: Spectral Knight (5 mana – 4 dmg / 6 health minion – Can’t be targeted by spells or Hero powers)

Boss #3: The Four Horsemen

His hero power is “Draw 2 cards”.  (Draw 2 cards in heroic).  I don’t remember.

Reward: Deathlord (3 mana – 2 dmg / 8 health minion – Taunt Deathrattle: Your opponent puts a minion from their deck into the battlefield)

Once you beat all 3 Heroes, you will receive the card, Baron Rivendare (4 mana – 1 dmg / 7 health minion – “Your minions trigger their deathrattles twice”)

Class Challenges:

The class challenge uses a pre-made deck to go against a pre-selected opponent.  It’s designed to be focused on what each class does well.  This wing saw the release of the Shaman and Warlock challenges.

1. Problems plaguing the Naxxramas Wing #2 launch

Yes, that was intentional.  The launch of the second wing in the Naxxramas adventure has had a few issues.  First of all, players were having problems purchasing the wing using gold and more importantly there were numerous situations where players were double charged for unlocking both the wing and the full adventure.  Ariannwyn was affected.  Since her purchase was made on an iPad, Blizzard said to go through Apple’s support to handle the issue.  We’ve done this and we are awaiting resolution.  Blizzard is manually going through and reversing out double transactions for those using PC/Mac.

Players were also getting messages saying “Waiting for Authorization”.  A fix was just put out yesterday (Saturday 8/2/14) that addresses that issue.  (http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/13661256003?page=25#499)

Some players had their purchase go through but the wing didn’t unlock.  Again, they are still working on the issue.

There was a hotfix that resolved the issue for many players but many more are still having problems.

2. Alexstrsza Nerfed In The Plague Quarter

It was discovered that if you play Alexstrsza against Kel’Thuzad in heroic mode, he will block the action and destroy the card shouting “This is heroic Naxxramas!  I won’t stand for such cheap tactics here!”

3. August card back is announced.  It’s the Icecrown card back.  We have an image in the show notes.

The second wing of Naxxramas has opened up and we’ve had a few days to play with it.  Over all what are our thoughts at this stage of working through it?  Normal mode?  Heroic Mode?

Let’s look at each boss individually.

Boss #1: Noth the Plaguebringer

His hero power is “Whenever an enemy minion dies, raise a 2/2 skeleton.” (5/5 skeleton in Heroic mode).  I beat him in normal with my Leeroy deck.  I haven’t beaten him yet in Heroic. Reward: Stoneskin Gargoyle (3 mana – 1 dmg / 4 health minion – At the start of your turn restore this minion to full health)

Boss #2: Heigan the Unclean

His hero power is “Deal 1 damage to the left most enemy minion.”  (3 damage in heroic)  I also used my Leeroy deck to clear this one out.

Reward: Unstable Ghoul (2 mana – 1 dmg / 3 health minion – Taunt Deathrattle: Deal 1 damage to all minions)

Boss #3: Loatheb

His hero power is “Deal 3 damage to the enemy hero”.  (3 damage in heroic).  I had to switch to my control warrior to be this one.

Reward: Sludge Belcher (5 mana – 3 dmg / 5 health minion – Taunt Deathrattle: Summon a 1 / 2 slime with taunt)

Class Challenges:

The class challenge uses a pre-made deck to go against a pre-selected opponent.  It’s designed to be focused on what each class does well.  This wing saw the release of the Hunter and Mage challenges.  Win you complete a challenge, you get a special class specific card.

2. Naxx Released

We nailed the release date perfectly.  It came out on Tuesday, while we were on a plane crossing the country.

3. Launch Problems

There were very few problems with the launch.  Some players were experiencing crashing issues and many were experiencing lag.  Seems to have cleared up at this point.

4. iPad Improvements with new version

You might not have read about this, but with this update came some dramatic improvements on the iPad client.  iPad mini (1st gen) and iPad 2 users will see the most improvement.  They do recommend minimizing how many apps are running and keep some free space open on your iPad for better performance.

Naxxramas Discussion

1. Initial Thoughts

– Very difficult at first until you get the basic idea of how to counter it.

– Heroic is extremely hard (until you figure it out)

– Class Quests were fairly easy using the deck I beat normal on.

– Maybe it would have been better to release all at the same time?  Or not.

2. What People Are Saying

– People on the forums have clarified that this is not an expansion but a solo adventure mode.  Blizzard has stated that there will be an expansion in the future.  This is important to understand because it helps set proper expectations.

– Lots of people saying “I beat everything in 30 mins” or “I beat all but the last heroic boss in one try”.  This makes me feel stupid.  But there is the question of how truthful people are being.

– A lot feel that it was ‘underwhelming’, which I agree with so far.  It seems very shallow.  Once I’ve beaten one of the bosses, I almost don’t want to go back and do it again.

– Many not happy with basically no rewards going through the bosses other than a few cards.  No gold.  Also not replayability because of this.

– Sounds like the Zoo deck is one of the better decks against the Naxx AI in this wing.

4. Beating Heroic Mode

There are several different decks people are posting that they used to beat Naxx.  However, what I find most interesting, especially for our audience, are the ones that are made up of common or cheap cards.  Decks that casual players can make.  I do want to state that I would recommend you keep trying to beat it on your own before looking up decks.  If you find a way to beat it on your own you learn more in the process and have more pride once you succeed.  It also allows the content to last you a little longer until the next wing is released.  If you look up decks you will blow through the content and might find yourself disappointed.

2. Naxx Golden Cards – Controversy

3. Naxx Board

5.  Reynad Quits

One of the popular Twitch streamers, Reynad (http://www.twitch.tv/reynad27), decided the other day that he’s going to quit playing Hearthstone until Curse of Naxxramas comes out.

He said “It’s been 8 months. It’s gotten to the point where every deck is perfected pretty much so. Zoo was the first deck that was perfected, and then miracle rogue was the second, and then druid was the third. And it’s just… it’s all draws, there’s no play to the game right now so I’m just not having fun anymore.”

He’s just decided to stream Magic the Gathering until it does come out.

Well I spent time this week (on and off) looking at the Blizzard Hearthstone forums for any new information about Naxx and such.  What I found very quickly is that there are basically two major topics being discussed right now on the forums.

1.  When is Naxx coming out?

Yes there is a lot of discussion about the debate of when Naxx is coming out.  Mostly it’s people posting that “they have it on good authority that it’s coming out Tuesday!” or “There is no way it’s coming out this week because … “.  Lots and lots of threads like that.  It’s a good question and one I’m hoping we find out the answer to sooner than later.  Unfortunately, it’s not a very useful conversation.

4.  Should you save up gold to buy the wings or just pay cash?

Overall most agree that you should spend the cash for Naxx and use your gold for packs instead.  Here is one thread with numbers behind it.  http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/13347465220?page=7

2800 gold is 28 packs. At about $1.33 a pack, that’s a little over 37 bucks.

15 packs = $19.99 – 2 packs for $2.99 – 1 pack for 100 gold.

1 pack is approx. $1.50.; 40 is approx. $1.25 per packm

Compare the numbers below. The lower gold to $ value, the better the deal it is

1 pack: 1g : $0.015

40 packs: 1g : $0.0125

1 naxx: 1g : $0.01

2-5 naxx: 1g : $0.0714

Conclusion: Buying any bundle of Naxx wings (with $$) will give you almost double TO double the value of your dollar than if you bought the packs (with $$) because gold is significantly cheaper (by the dollar amount) if you buy Naxx wings over packs. If you’re considering spending money on packs, but saving your gold for Naxx, do it the other way around and you will get a LOT more cards for your money overall.

1. Curse of Naxxramas Screenshots Leaked

Someone released images last week of what appears to be how Curse of Naxxramas will look.  There were several images shown with each wing separated out with a boss at the end.  They also revealed a card, Kel’Thuzad.  (8 mana 6/8 – Text: He returns all friendly minions to the battlefield that died that turn).  Blizzard asked all the sites to remove the links to the images.

2. Release Date Announced Then Unannounced

Aratil from Blizzard said this week,

“Just wanted to give everyone a head’s up that we are currently targeting to release Curse of Naxxramas during the month of July. Unfortunately, we still have a lot of implementing and bug fixing to get through, so please stay tuned!
