  • Historian Miriam Pawel talks to Leonard about "The Browns of California." (9/25/18)
"Miriam Pawel’s fascinating book 'The Browns of California' charts four generations of the Brown family, focusing on the political careers of Edmund (Pat) Brown — the two-term California governor from 1959 to 1967 — and his son, Edmund (Jerry) Brown Jr., governor from 1975 to 1983, and again from 2011 to the present. The Browns’ collective 24-year political domination of California has spanned an astonishing 60 years. Pawel, the author of ‘The Crusades of Cesar Chavez,’ bills her family saga as a ‘lens through which to tell a unique history of the 31st state,’ but it does much more. Her engaging narrative of the politics, ideas and policies of the two Edmund Browns illuminates the sea change in the nation’s politics in the last half of the 20th century.” – Lisa McGirr, New York Times Book Review. Don’t miss Leonard’s conversation with Miriam about one of the nation’s lesser-known political dynasties.

  • Immigration attorney and former Mayor Michael Wildes tells Leonard about his new book. (9/21/18)
Michael Wildes can justifiably claim that immigration law is in his blood – his father Leon attained international fame defending John Lennon from deportation during the 1970s. Inspired to join his father after a career as a federal prosecutor, Michael rose to managing partner of the law firm of Wildes & Weinberg. During his time there, he has participated in a string of immigration cases that required a Kevlar vest under his business suit and would seem more at home in the pages of an espionage thriller. In “Safe Haven In America: Battles to Open the Golden Door,” Michael describes representing defecting KGB agents, whistle blowers, disillusioned Saudi diplomats, accused terrorists, professionals and celebrities, such as First Lady Melania Trump and soccer legend Pele. But the book also recounts his efforts help the victims of international child kidnapping cases, families that were all but destroyed by the attack on the World Trade Center and a DACA recipient who endured a hate crime. In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large,” Michael discusses the book and reflects on a career spent fighting to keep good people in the country.
