We cap off Spooktober with a movie that deeply traumatized  Adam as a lad. (Chad was already desensitized by the time he was 13). The boys go deep into this 1993 alien horror film based on a TRUE story staring the liquid Terminator Robert Patrick.

Adam regales us with the deep research he did into Travis Walton and recounts his quest to parts of Arizona in search of THE TRUTH while intentionally trying to get abducted. We continue our month-long journey into the spooky and the sublime by reviewing a movie we’ve never seen… Dan Aykroyd’s 1991 horror/comedy Nothing But Trouble… and boy is it a scary.  As in, scary how bad it is!

How does a movie with Chevy Chase, Demi Moore and John Candy, written and directed by the King of the Ghostbusters, fail so spectacularly?  At Less Than 2000, we strive to go deeper than to simply say “it sucks,” so we put on our film student and filmmaker hats to get into the nitty gritty of WHY it sucked so hard.  Chad doesn’t think it’s that bad and even his wife got into it.  Adam hates it with every fiber of his being but knows why it has some marginal appeal.  If nothing else, at least it had Digital Underground and gave us Tupac’s feature film debut!

Batman (1989) was the first PG-13 movie the boys ever saw, and boy, was it a great one.  Directed by Tim Burton and staring Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Billy Dee Williams and Jack Palance, with music by Prince and Danny Elfman, it was a smash hit beyond Warner Bros.’ wildest dreams.

In 2022, it’s hard to imagine a world where super hero movies aren’t insanely popular, but before Batman came out it was expected to be a massive bomb.  All it did was become the biggest blockbuster of 1989 and usher in new paradigm of comic book movies with a unique and fresh take on the genre.

Some movies just aren’t as “good” as we remember; some are better. Some might be classified as “good, bad movies.” Which is exactly what Kuffs starring Christian Slater and Mila Jovovich is.

Kuffs is a very PG-13 “cop” movie about an immature boy who inherits a patrol specialist district in San Francisco and becomes a “man.” Simply put, they should have made a great R version instead.
