  • Wingin’ It 133.1: The Life of Luther (Part 35): Lucas Cranach the Elder
In the THIRTY-FIFTH episode of our Wingin' It series on the Life of Luther, Mike and Wade continue their walk through the life of Martin Luther. While there are many important and intriguing characters they have encountered along the journey, the most fascinating might be Lucas Cranach. In Part 35 of the series the guys discuss this unsung partner of Luther’s. We recommend The Serpent and the Lamb: Cranach, Luther, and the Making of the Reformation as a great primer on Cranach and his role in the Reformation. Another great resource is the Cranach Digital Archive where you can explore not only Cranach’s art but scholarship on the great artist, mayor, pharmacist, business man, promoter, and all around talented guy. We hope you will enjoy our latest episode on the Life and Thought of Martin Luther.

  • The New Perspective on Paul
    00:00 - Introduction
    07:05 - Free-for-All (Favorite part of Lent)
16:34 - Main Topic (The New Perspective on Paul)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE Wade and Mike welcome guest Rev. Daniel Waldschmidt of St. John’s Lutheran in Burlington, WI in order to discuss the New Perspective on Paul. Rev. Waldschmidt patiently explains to the guys what this new view of St. Paul entails. While this topic is complicated, Rev. Waldschmidt does a nice job of explaining the basics of this view and how it doesn’t match up with the traditional Reformation reading of St. Paul and his epistles. Rev. Waldschmidt is certainly qualified to speak on this topic having studied it during his Masters work at Trinity International University’s Divinity School and having presented an essay on the topic at Wisconsin in Lutheran Seminary. You can find a digital copy of that essay here.
A big thanks to Rev. Waldschmidt for joining us on this episode!

  • The Eleven Nations of the United States
    00:00 - Introduction
    05:55 - Free-for-All (Predications: Politics 2020)
16:42 - Main Topic (The Eleven Nations of the United States)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO Wade and Mike sit down with Rev. Dr. Paul Lehninger of Wisconsin Lutheran College to discuss the work of author Colin Woodard. Woodard believes that there are eleven distinct nations which comprise the United States (and Canada and Northern Mexico). These rival nations have remained consistently cohesive throughout U.S. history. Woodard offers presidential election results to prove his claim. If this is true, it provides a more nuanced look into politics and culture than the usually blue state/red state divide. We hope you will enjoy the discussion.
And a big thanks to Dr. Lehninger for joining us once again!

  • Four Loves - St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mukwonago, WI
In this Bird's Eye View episode we bring you a talk that Mike gave in February 202 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mukwonago, WI. The talk was given the day before Valentine's Day, but Mike assured the audience that that was mere coincidence (evidently he and Rev. Bortulin don't always remember the date of Valentines day...shocking, really).
Although the title might suggest that Mike discussed C.S. Lewis's work The Four Loves, in reality he just stole the idea and did his own thing. If you are interested in a discussion of C.S. Lewis's work, though, we did cover that way back on Episode 45, so go check that one out. In this talk, Mike uses the structure that Lewis presents to discuss the way in which God's love for us (agape) animates all other love through us, even if imperfectly.
A big thanks to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church for inviting Mike to speak. If you find yourself in or near Mukwonago, WI, make sure to stop by and check them out!

  • Wingin’ It 131.1: The Life of Luther (Part 34): The Bondage of the Will
In the THIRTY-FOURTH the guys discuss the debate between famous humanist, Desiderius Erasmus, and Martin Luther, who reluctantly battled over the doctrine of the will as it relates to salvation. In 1524 Erasmus wrote his diatribe On the Freedom of the Will. Luther responded about a year later with On the Bondage of the Will. Wade and Mike continue their series on the life of Luther by providing some historical background on this debate and summarizing both sides. We hope you will enjoy the latest in our Wingin' It Series The Life of Luther.

  • The Spiritual Age: What Lurks Beyond Postmodernism
    00:00 - Introduction
04:15 - Main Topic (The Spiritual Age: What Lurks Beyond Postmodernism)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE Wade and Mike discuss the ebb and flow of culture throughout history through the lens of two men: Pitirim Sorokin and Frederic Baue. Sorokin was the Russian born sociologist who founded the Sociology department at Harvard University. Baue is a retired Lutheran pastor who took Sorokin’s book, The Crisis of Our Age, and applied it to contemporary culture in his book The Spiritual Society: What Lurks Beyond Postmodernism. We invite you to listen to the guys apply these authors’ works to the church and society.

    00:00 - Introduction
04:24 - Free-for-All (Animal least expected to be as deadly as it is)
16:37 - Main Topic (The Pauline Epistles)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY Wade and Mike invite Wisconsin Lutheran College’s disease expert, Dr. James Henkel, back onto the show. This is the second time Dr. Henkel has come onto the podcast. We invite you to listen to his previous visit way back on Episode 23, entitled The Guys Get Disease (and if you haven't listened to that episode, do yourself the favor of giving it a listen, it's a fun one). This time the guys talk viruses and pandemics. Wade brings the Free-for-All topic, which asks the guys to discuss which animal is the most dangerous even though it looks innocent. (Spoiler Alert: Wade’s thinks its chickens.)
A big thanks to Dr. Henkel for joining us once again!

In episode ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE Wade and Mike sit down to discuss the Pauline Epistles. They walk through some of the specifics, but generally attempt to take an overview of what Paul seems to be doing in his letters and why his writing is so important to the church.
