  • The Death of Expertise
    00:00 - Introduction
06:36 - Main Topic (The Death of Expertise)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-EIGHT Wade and Mike take a look at Tom Nichols’ book The Death of Expertise: The Campaign against Established Knowledge and Why It Matters. Nichols makes the case that ignorance may be the biggest threat to a democratic republic. The guys largely agree with Nichols’ warning and add their own (non-expert) insight. Problems with journalism, higher education, technology, consumerism, and the general skepticism towards “elite experts” in our culture are all discussed. We hope you will enjoy listening to Let the Bird Fly’s take on this critically acclaimed book.

  • It Can’t Happen Here … or Can It?
    00:00 - Introduction
15:16 - Main Topic (It Can't Happen Here ... or Can It?)
In episode ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SEVEN Mike and Wade discuss Sinclair Lewis’ It Can’t Happen Here, a 1935 dystopian novel of how fascism took hold in the United States. The guys compare and contrast Lewis’ fiction with the current political climate. What is fascism? Why did Lewis think 1930’s America was vulnerable to a corporate state when so many people believed “it can’t happen here”? And could it happen in our own day? While there are some eerie similarities, the lessons to be learned from Lewis are not necessarily political but have to do with humanity, freedom, and the two kingdoms. We hope you will enjoy this foray into this Nobel Prize winner’s novel.

23:47 - Main Topic (The American Revolution)

Also, Wade figures out how to use a clock as a timer much to Mike's chagrin.

In the THIRTY-FIRST episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike discuss the so-called Peasants' War, which took place from 1524-1525 (yes, they're still in the mid-1520's). In this episode the guys look at what drives the Peasants' War, as well as attempt to dig into the mind of Luther as he attempted to respond to this civic revolt as a de facto leader of the burgeoning reformation within the church

  • Communication of Attributes: A Christmas Story
    00:00 - Introduction
    06:03 - Free-for-All (Favorite Christmas Hymns)
21:29 - Main Topic (Communication of Attributes: A Christmas Story)
On episode ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE Mike and Wade are joined once again by Rev. Dr. Paul Lehninger, who teaches with Wade an Mike at Wisconsin Lutheran College in the theology department. This year they welcome him back for a Christmas episode on the communication of attributes in the person of Christ...so the most Christmas of stories! The three of them get us in the mood for the season by discussing their favorite Christmas hymns in the free-for-all, before diving into a topic that has been at the heart of controversy in the church for nearly as long as the New Testament church has existed.

In the THIRTIETH episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike discuss the role of Ulrich Zwingli in the Reformation. • Wingin’ It 123.1: The Life of Luther (Part 29) – The Reformation Settles In
In the TWENTY-NINTH episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike continue their march through the life and times of Martin Luther. In this episode they step back to take a bit broader view of the burgeoning Reformation in the 1520s. During this period the Reformation had clearly taken hold in electoral Saxony, so it seems like a good time to step back and take a look at some of the themes from the early days of the Reformation.
