    * 37:51 - Main Topic (The Two Kingdoms)

    On episode EIGHTY-SIX of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome back Rev. Dr. Mark Braun from Wisconsin Lutheran College. If you haven't heard the past episodes with Dr. Braun, do yourself the favor or rectifying that right here. But first, give this episode in which the guys discuss The Two Kingdoms, a topic that they've brushed up against in more than an episode or two in the past. A big thanks to Dr. Braun for joining us once again! We hope you enjoy the conversation.

    Our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther continues with Luther’s trip to Rome. Listen into the conversation as the guys ask why this happened, what it meant for the Reformation, and even occasionally what it means for us today.

  • Episode 85: The Guys Get Sci-Fi

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 03:16 - Free-for-All (Pick one super power)
    * 16:16 - Main Topic (The Guys Get Sci-Fi)

    On episode EIGHTY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome Dr. Joel Davis, who teaches chemistry at Wisconsin Lutheran College. But instead of talking science with Dr. Davis (they hope to do that next time he's on), they talk Science Fiction. Dr. Davis' interest in science, however, is not unrelated to his interest in science fiction (as he mentions in the episode); but if you're looking for some cold, hard chemistry, you'll have to wait. In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy our discussion about science fiction and the space it creates for us to look back at ourselves. If you don't skip over the Free-for-All, though, you'll have to suffer through us discussing our choice super powers....spoiler alert, Wade's first choice is already taken.
    As there were a number of books referenced in this episode, here's at least a partial list for anyone interested:

    Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
    1984 by  George Orwell
    Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
    World Without Mind: The Existential Threat of Big Tech by Franklin Foer
    The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr

    * 07:07 - Free-for-All (Personal Intro Songs)
    * 16:46 - Main Topic (Anthropology)

    On episode EIGHTY-FOUR of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and Wade welcome Dr. Ned Farley to discuss Anthropology, a topic he knows more than a thing or two about. Before getting the main topic, though, the guys fantasize about what they'd pick as their personal intro songs...you know if they did something worthy of having their own intro songs. We're very thankful to Dr. Farley for taking the time to sit down with us and we're sure you'll enjoy the great conversation.

  • Wingin’ It 83.1: The Life of Luther (Part 5) – From Law to Friar
    The Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther continues with Luther’s transition from law student to Augustinian Friar. In many ways the transition was fairly simple: his daily schedule was not too different, he was still an academic, and he only moved across town. Yet the transition could not have been more life-altering. Listen into the conversation as the guys ask why this happened and what it meant for the Reformation.

  • Episode 83: On Christmas with Athanasius, Lewis, and Luther

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 02:52 - Scripture Narrative (Luke 2:1-15)
    * 16:34 - Free-for-All (Favorite Christmas Custom)
    * 30:33 - Main Topic (On Christmas with Athanasius, Lewis, and Luther)

    On episode EIGHTY-THREE of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and Wade welcome back Dr. Paul Lehninger and Rev. Greg Lyon to discuss Christmas. As a launching point for the discussion the guys use Athanasius's On the Incarnation, along with C.S. Lewis's introduction to Athanasius's classic treatise. They also read Luther's 1530 Sermon on Christmas Day (except Mike, who does very little he's asked to do and yet far more than he needs to), which they get to about half way through the main topic. Before getting to that discussion, though, they have a real Scripture Narrative (thanks for checking Wade's "bible," Mike), as well as a Free-for-All on their Favorite Christmas Customs.
    We hope enjoy and that you and yours have a very merry Christmas!

  • Episode 82: The Importance of Travel

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 07:45 - Free-for-All (Favorite food when traveling)
    * 21:14 - Main Topic (The Importance of Travel)

    On episode EIGHTY-TWO of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome onto the show Dr. Martin Moldenhauer, who teaches on the English faculty at Wisconsin Lutheran College. But instead of talking Shakespeare, American literature, or the metamorphic process or writing (all topics Dr. Moldenhauer would be fantastic on as well), they sit down to talk about another personal and professional interest of Dr. Moldenhauer's: the importance of travel. After indulging in some discussion of their own Wanderlust, they ponder the benefits of experiencing different cultures. In the end, they take as their theme the famous Mark Twain quote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” We hope you are able to sit back and enjoy the discussion.

  • Wingin’ It 81.3: The Life of Luther (Part 3) – Early Education
    The guys continue their Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther by exploring his early education. Luther was afforded a good education that prepared him for university. It was rough and, yes, he did get beat a few times, but he emerged fully prepared to take on the rigors of a college education.  Of course, it wasn’t just the curriculum that shaped him. The camaraderie with his classmates, the faithfulness of his instructors, and the encouragement of those who saw in him something special shaped the young Luther.

    Here's a brief bibliography on the Life of Martin Luther:

    Martin Luther: A Life by James Nestingen
    Luther the Reformer: The Story of the Man and His Career by James Kittelson
    A Short Life of Martin Luther by Thomas Kaufmann
    Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet by Lyndal Roper
    Luther: Visionary Reformer by Scott Hendrix
    Here I Stand: The Life of Martin Luther by Roland Bainton
    Luther: Man between God and the Devil by Heiko Oberman
    Brand Luther by Andrew Pettegree
