  • Wingin’ It 95.1: The Life of Luther (Part 17) – Meeting with Cardinal Cajetan
    In this episode, the SEVENTEENTH in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike discuss Luther's summons to Augsburg in 1518 for the imperial diet. Specifically they look at Luther going before Cardinal Thomas Cajetan, who was on his first diplomatic mission. Cardinal Cajetan is not as interested in the theological debate that Luther would really like, which leads to some frustration on the part of Luther and perhaps a rather significant turning point in the history of the Reformation. We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.

    * 06:57 - Free-for-All (Book Giveaway: Wade's most cringe-worth moments)
    * 22:32 - Main Topic (Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life - Part 1)

    On episode NINETY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! Wade, Mike and Peter sit down to discuss a presentation Wade has been giving entitled Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life. It's clear that Wade has no trouble talking, but then you throw Peter and Mike into the mix....well, let's just say this is Part 1 of their discussion on this topic (here's to hoping they can keep it to just two parts). Before getting to the Main Topic, though, Mike and Peter revisit the book giveaway promised on Episode 87. To refresh your memory, there were four copies of Valerie Locklaire's book Called to Defend: An Apologetics Handbook for the Middle School Student, that we promised to give away to the listeners would could come up with the most cringe-worth memories of Wade from the podcast so far. Thank you to all who submitted entries. We wish we'd had time to read them all! And thank you to Mike for the late submission as well. We hope you enjoy the episode.

  • Wingin’ It 94.1: The Life of Luther (Part 16) – Heidelberg Disputation
    In this episode, the SIXTEENTH in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike discuss the Heidelberg Disputation of 1518, as they continue their walk through some of the important aspects of Luther's life and the time of the Reformation. This is the first of three important moments when Luther early on is called to stand up for his teachings (stay tuned, and we'll get to the others as well). We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 06:12 - Free-for-All (Most enamoring part of the modern world to an ancient Romans)
    * 19:08 - Main Topic (The First Commandment)

    On episode NINETY-FOUR of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and Wade sit down with Professor Sheena Finnigan to discuss Rome's transition from a republic. What made it possible for Caesar to become dictator? What contributed to the desire for strong emperors instead? Are there parallels to our own day? What is fair to compare and what isn't? What is the value of history when it comes to such things? We enjoyed having Prof. Finnigan on for this discussion, we think you'll enjoy it too!

  • Wingin’ It 93.1: The Life of Luther (Part 15) – Disputation Against Scholastic Theology
    This is the FIFTEENTH episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, where Wade and Mike are walking through some of the important aspects of Luther's life and the time of the Reformation. In this session they discuss the Disputation Against Scholastic Theology, which is actually from before the posting of the 95 Theses (which Mike and Wade covered last time), but only by a month or so. We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 02:41 - Free-for-All (Animal Fights - Part Deux!)
    * 14:10 - Main Topic (The First Commandment)

    On episode NINETY-THREE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys were invited to record at The Gathering Series, which is put on by The Point of Grace, a Milwaukee area campus ministry group. All four of the guys were able to make it and they were talking to college students, so of course Mike insisted that the Free-for-All be Animal Fights. But even Mike couldn't have anticipated the riveting discussion of the Great Emu War in Australia. Eventually Wade managed to pull Mike away so that we could get to the Main Topic, which was a broad discussion of the First Commandment. Thank you to The Point of Grace for inviting (and putting up with) us, and thank you to the great audience! We hope our listeners enjoy the conversation as well.

  • Wingin’ It 92.1: The Life of Luther (Part 14) – Indulgences and the 95 Theses
    In this session we finally make it to 1517 in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther. It only took 14 sessions to get there, but we reached the so-called "beginning" of the Reformation. But instead of spending the whole time of Luther's 95 Theses (which aren't terribly "Lutheran" anyway), Mike and Wade spend much of the time discussing the practice of selling indulgences at the time, as well as the general state of the Church. We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.

    * 13:17 - Free-for-All (LTBF MLB Predictions: 2019)
    * 30:14 - Main Topic (The Four Gospel Accounts)

    On episode NINETY-TWO of Let the Bird Fly! Wade, Mike, and Peter are joined once again by Josh Seeger of Wisconsin Lutheran High School. In this episode they finally officially discuss the four Gospel accounts. If you've been listening for a while now, you know that this topic has been brushed up against once or twice in the past. As Peter likes to say for the Free-for-All, though, this time they're going to settle the question once and for all. (Or maybe not, it is Peter that even suggests a Wingin' It series on the four Gospel accounts....these guys sure know how to milk a topic!) Before arriving at the main topic, however, Mr. Seeger joins in the much awaited 2019 MLB Let the Bird Fly! preview! (Some of that previous sentence may have been embellishment.) A big thanks to Mr. Seeger for taking the time to join us again. We definitely enjoyed the conversation, and we hope y'all do as well!
