Let the Bird Fly! episodes

  • Episode 108: On Reading Widely
    00:00 - Introduction
03:53 - Free-for-All (What we've been up to this summer)
17:42 - Main Topic (On Reading Widely)
On episode ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! Mike is joined for the first time in a long time by Wade  (it's not clear how Mike feels about this). The two sit down in the middle of summer 2019 to discuss the importance of reading widely for both the laity and for pastors. Before getting to the main topic, however, they decide to catch the audience up on what they've been up to (and perhaps an excuse as to our lack of new episodes lately).
We apologize that episodes have been sporadic this summer. We hope to get back to our regular schedule soon. In the meantime, we hope y'all are having a great summer!
If you're interested in joining Wade and Mike at the 2019 Here We Still Stand conference in San Diego, head over there now to see if there are still tickets available (but hurry, this will sell out). And if you do sign up, remember to use the promo code PNET19 to save $25 off your registration.

  • Episode 107: Missiology in the Old Testament
    00:00 - Introduction
02:44 - Main Topic (Missiology in the Old Testament)
On episode ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN of Let the Bird Fly! Mike welcomes back frequent guest Rev. Brian Doebler. Those who have heard Rev. Doebler on previous episodes might remember that he is currently working on a PhD in Missiology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. As this is a topic the Rev. Doebler has thought about more than most, Mike asked him if he'd be willing to do a few episodes on different aspects of Missiology. This episode focuses on Missiology in the Old Testament.
You'll notice there's no Free-for-All again, as well as no Wade. This is not a coincidence.
A big thanks to Rev. Doebler for joining us once again (and agreeing to continue to do so).
If you're interested in joining Wade and Mike at the 2019 Here We Still Stand conference in San Diego, head over there now to see if there are still tickets available (but hurry, this will sell out). And if you do sign up, remember to use the promo code PNET19 to save $25 off your registration.

  • Episode 106: Luther on Music
    00:00 - Introduction
    03:44 - Free-for-All (Rockin' in Prague)
25:53 - Main Topic (Luther on Music)
On episode ONE HUNDRED AND SIX of Let the Bird Fly! Mike sits down with Dr. Jeremy Zima once again; this time to discuss Martin Luther on Music. Before getting to the main topic, though, Mike asks Dr. Zima to discuss his recent trip to Europe....with his rock band (well, he says a country band, but whatever). That's right, Dr. Zima's not just a professor, he's also an INTERNATIONAL rock star! But don't let this rock star fool you, he's also a music historian (is there anything this guy doesn't do?). It's hard to overestimate the role of music in the Reformation, and in this episdoe Dr. Zima makes that abundantly clear.
A big thanks to Dr. Zima for joining us again!
    Books mentioned in this episode:
"Luther's Liturgical Music" by Robin Leaver.
"Luther on Music: Paradigms of Praise" by Carl Schalk.
"Singing the Resurrection" by Erin Lambert.
"Worship Wars in Early Lutheranism" by Jospeh Herl.

  • Episode 105: On Serving Military Families
    00:00 - Introduction
02:31 - Main Topic (Serving Military Families)
On episode ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! Mike sits down with Rev. Paul Horn, who is pastor at Lamb of God Lutheran Churuch in Lafayette, Indiana. Rev. Horn has also served congregations in Kentucky and Georgia and has had a number of opportunities to serve military families. We wanted to have him on to discuss the challenges and benefits of serving this unique group of people. Since Mike's in charge again, you'll be without a Free-for-All (eventually Wade will see what he's up to, though, and get back on an episode to right the ship). Rev. Horn forces Mike into a mini-Free-for-All, however, so not all is lost (thanks, Paul!).
Thanks to Rev. Horn for joining us while he was in the area!

Dr. Keith is also a co-host of The Thinking Fellows Podcast, which is a fantastic podcast in the 1517 Podcast Network (which Let the Bird Fly! just happens to be a part of). In this episode Wade and Dr. Keith square off over two influential characters in the early Reformation: Philip Melanchton and Matthias Flacius Illyricus (these just so happen to be the dissertation topics of these distinguished doctors, so it's sure to be a good conversation). Before getting to the battle royale, though, the guys talk Avengers and contemporary story telling in the Free-for-all.

A huge thanks to Dr. Scott Keith for joining us! We had a great time and hope we can do it again.
