  • Episode 100: This is Water

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 04:02 - Free-for-All (Place you'd most like to record an episode)
    * 12:09 - Main Topic (This is Water)

    On episode ONE HUNDRED (they finally did it) of Let the Bird Fly! the guys sit down (sans Ben despite their best efforts to get him there) to discuss the commencement address This is Water by David Foster Wallace. They've mentioned Wallace on previous episodes and even dedicated an entire episode to his Consider the Lobster. Before diving into the main topic, the guys decided to commemorate their (official) 100th episode by asking the question Where would you most like to record an episode. Wade takes them to Detroit (because Wade), Mike doesn't know the capital of Albania, and Peter is a bit salty that they're not recording in West Allis (don't worry, though, they made it there right after recording). But the real reason they got together was to discuss the talk by David Foster Wallace, and that they do. If you'd like to listen to Wallace's This is Water, you can do so right here; and if you'd like to read it, you can find the text right here.
    We would like to thank all of our listeners for joining the conversation over the past couple of years. It's amazing that we've made it to 100 (official) episodes and no one is more surprised by that than we are. It's been a fun ride. We hope you've been digging it as much as we have. Thank you for all of your support. Your emails. Your comments. Your reviews. Your sharing. Your well-wishes. Your episode (and Free-for-All) ideas. But most of all, thank you for letting us into your conversations and for joining us in ours. This has been a tremendous blessing for us, and we wouldn't be doing it without you and your support.
    Some books mentioned in the episode:

    * Law and Gospel in Action: Foundation, Ethics, Church by Mark Mattes
    * Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
    * Seculosity by David Zahl

    If you're interested in joining Wade and Mike at the 2019 Here We Still Stand conference in San Diego, head over there now to see if there are still tickets available (but hurry, this will sell out). And if you do sign up, remember to use the promo code PNET19 to save $25 off your registration.
    If you'd like more information on the Apologetics course Mike is offering at Wisconsin Lutheran College during the summer of 2019, you can find all that information right here. And if you know someone who might be interested, make sure to share! Let the Bird Fly!

  • Wingin’ It 99.6: The Life of Luther (Part 21) – To the Christian Nobility
    In the TWENTY-FIRST episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike discuss the first of Luther's treatises from 1520: To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation. The year of 1520 was a very busy year for Luther, where he not only begins a publishing frenzy, but also dives deeper and deeper into what we will look back at as hallmarks of the Reformation. We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.

  • Episode 99.5: Easter 2

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 07:40 - Main Topic (Easter 2)

    On episode NINETY-NINE (point FIVE) of Let the Bird Fly! Wade and Mike sit down to discuss the often forgotten celebration of the second week of Easter. If you're keeping track at home you might wonder why this is not episode 100. Well, give it a listen and you'll hear their lame excuse. You'll also hear Mike and Wade elaborate on a topic that the guys touched on way back in Episode 52 with guest Rev. John Bortulin. It was Holy Week as the guys recorded, so time was tight. This means that they cut out the Free-for-All, which may leave you wondering how you can get them to celebrate Holy Week every week.
    Happy Easter from Let the Bird Fly!

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 02:49 - Free-for-All (MLB 2019: An Early Review)
    * 08:39 - Main Topic (On the Commodification of People)

    On episode NINETY-NINE of Let the Bird Fly! Wade hijacks the podcast and forces Mike and Peter to discuss the commodification of people. You might be surprised to find out that despite Wade's attempt to spring a topic on the guys, they managed to still find plenty to talk about. But first they decided to talk more baseball (can you tell they're all excited about their teams this season?) with a far-too-early review of the MLB season so far.
    Some books mentioned in the episode:

    * Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
    * Bioethics: A Primer for Christians by Gilbert Meilaender
    * Seculosity by David Zahl

    At the beginning of the episode Wade mentioned the 2019 Here We Still Stand conference, which is hosted by 1517.org. • BONUS Episodette 98.3: Holy Week….for you

    The guys decided to record a shortish (alright, we can't do short, this is the best we've got) BONUS episodette for Holy Week. This was a last-minute addition, so prepare yourself for some rambling (and if you weren't already prepared, welcome to Let the Bird Fly!, we're thrilled to have you as a new listener). Last year the guys talked Holy Week (and Easter 2) with Rev. John Bortulin, so if you're looking for more on Holy Week, head over to Episode 52. In this bonus episodette the guys discuss some of their thoughts on Holy Week for you.
    As you make the annual pilgrimage with the Church from the garden to the cross and finally the empty tomb, remember that Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection were, are, and always will be for you. It is this truth that truly gives the world back to us, freeing us to Let the Bird Fly! We hope you and yours have a blessed Holy Week.

  • Wingin’ It 98.1: The Life of Luther (Part 19) – The Leipzig Debate
    This is the NINETEENTH episode in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, where Wade and Mike are slowly creeping through Luther's life and many of the significant events at the time of the Reformation. * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 04:01 - Free-for-All (Summer and Easter Favorites)
    * 14:43 - Main Topic (On Being the Wife of a Pastor)

    On episode NINETY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and his wife Amanda have the Strong family over to their house for dinner and some podcasting. First the Berg and Strong kids talk about their favorite summer activities and favorite Easter tradition. Next the adults discuss what it means to be a pastor’s wife. Amanda and Abby Strong take the lead on this episode as we eavesdrop on their conversation. Abby’s husband, Aaron, is also there. And so is Mike but it’s not really about them.
    Rev. Strong is a pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, and Amanda and Abby both teach at St. Philip’s Lutheran School in Milwaukee. You can check out what they're doing at their respective links.

  • Episode 97: Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life – Part 3

    * 00:00 - Introduction
    * 11:27 - Main Topic (Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life - Part 3)

    On episode NINETY-SEVEN of Let the Bird Fly! Wade and Peter sit down to complete their discussion on Wade's presentation entitled Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life. If you missed parts 1 and 2 of our discussion you can find them here and here. When they started this topic Wade thought it was probably just one episode....maybe two...it seems he might have underestimated slightly. It may be that the guys just talk to much, or that Wade's hit on some important (or at least interesting) points with this presentation. Seeing as how they probably could've gone on for another 10 episodes, it might be the latter. (Of course, that doesn't preclude the fact that they clearly talk to much.) We hope you've enjoyed the conversation.

    In the EIGHTEENTH in our Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther, Wade and Mike sit down to discuss the path to the Leipzig debate. (Well, actually they sat down to discuss the Leipzig debate, but if you've been listening to this series, you already knew that was at least one episode away.) Before the Leipzig debate, however, they need to discuss Philipp Melanchthon's arrival in Wittenberg. The importance of Melanchthon to Luther and the Reformation would be difficult to overstate. We hope you enjoy; and if you're just finding this series on the Life of Luther, you can find the whole series right here.
