  • Episode 172: Why Am I Eating Healthy And Exercising But Not Losing Weight with JJ Virgin

JJ virgin shares her secrets about why women struggle to lose weight. She gives the secrets to a broken metabolism and how to fix it so you can have a lean body well past 40. Is intermittent fasting healthy? JJ shares how intermittent fasting can be healthy but also the ticks to moving in and out of intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet to optimize your weight. Are you tired of stepping on the scale and gaining 2-3 lb in 24 hours? Well, It’s not fat it’s inflammation and water weight. All you have to do is look back at what you ate in that 24-hour period of time and find the culprit and adjust your diet to get the scale to move in the right direction again. Weight loss is about getting healthy not just dieting!

    Do not miss these highlights:

10:28 We’ve all had some metabolic damage, and for a lot of us, it’s not actually your fault, you’ve been duped by misinformation.

11:02 You have to get healthy in order for your body to drop fat.

12:19 The three key things to a better metabolism and a healthy body -Body Composition – Blood Sugar Balance – Great Sleep.

13:06 Toxins circulating in your body are damaging, they storm in your fat and make you more insulin resistant.

15:31 If you’re doing things and they are not working, that’s actually just vital information.

16:34 The sicker you are the farther back in your ancestry, you have to go.

17:26 Your body is not supposed to be eating all the time, you’ve got to have this time for your body to get past digestion, and start restoration.

22:16 Build a plate that starts with protein first because everything builds around protein.

27:48  Why some people that have done great on keto, have greatly lost weight, but later on started gaining weight, and starting Keto doesn’t work again.

32:53 If you’re eating well and exercising, but you’re not sleeping, you’re at risk for obesity.

34:24 Some don’t differentiate fat carbs and protein. They just focus on how many calories they burn, and that would lead them into a spiral problem.

41:38  Focus on having a healthy body and not on how you lose weight because a healthy body burns stored fat for fuel, a healthy body holds on to a built muscle, and a healthy body detoxifies.

3:14Welcome back. I’m your host, Dr. Deb with let’s talk wellness now. And I have Chris burrows here with me. This is going to be a great conversation. He and I’ve just been chatting a few minutes before we got started. You guys are going to just love him. Chris, welcome to the show.

3:27Dr. Deb, thank you so much for having me. I’m excited to be here and to share some really kind of very interesting, cutting edge information with you and and your audience.

3:36Oh, thank you. So tell us what my vital C is. I thought when we started, I thought we were going to talk about nanoparticle vitamin C, but that’s not what we’re talking about at all.

3:48At all. No. So we’re gonna we’re gonna go way back, we’re gonna go back to the very beginning. And actually the discovery of a molecule. So in 1985, here in Rice University, which is in Houston was where I’m based, they discovered the third form of carbon, you’ve got diamond, you’ve got graphite, and now you’ve got to have a whole gamut of molecules called fullerenes. The most abundant of them is we kind of affectionately call it a buckyball. So I’m holding up a molecule if you’re just listening, the molecule I’m holding up the best way to imagine it is imagine a soccer ball where the lines on the soccer ball represent the bonds between the carbon atoms. You have a spherical molecule of 60 carbon atoms. The professor’s who discovered this, discovered it in 1985, and then went on to win the Nobel Prize for that discovery in 1996. So a short 11 years from discovery to being awarded the Nobel Prize. The reason they were awarded the Nobel Prizes, this molecule, this soccer ball shaped molecule is absolutely amazing. It’s harder than a diamond, it’ll actually turn into a diamond. It’s got six fold symmetry. One way I describe it is it performs forms as well or better than the current best material in every application. So better inks, better tires, better batteries, better photo cells, there’s actually a new symbol and chemistry because of this molecule. So we’re familiar by the way, that’s I think that’s how you know you’re going to get a Nobel Prize is when you add a symbol to the language of chemistry. So it turns out that the interior of the soccer ball shaped molecule is big enough for any atom on the periodic chart to fit inside of it. So lanthanum at C 60 means lanthanum, physically trapped inside the soccer ball shape, it’s not ionically bonded exterior, it’s not covalently bonded, it’s physically trapped inside of it. That’s something that had never existed prior to the discovery of this molecule. So, so not surprising, they won the Nobel Prize. Now, yours is a health show, and I just talked about a molecule that’s used in ink, batteries, tires and photo cells, people might be going, this is not going the direction that I want it to go. And it’s gonna get a little worse. So they actually assumed for various reasons that this molecule would be toxic. So they did a toxicity study. And they published the results of that toxicity study in 2012. In that study, they gave rats water, rats, olive oil, and then rats all the way on, we say if it’s prepared for consumption, it’s called the ESS 60. That’s the 60 carbon atoms. Instead of being toxic, the rats that they gave the olive oil with Ess 60, really the my vitals the formula to live to 90% longer than the control group. So that’s the single longest longevity experimental result ever. The next best way to live live longer, and you may be familiar with this is called calorie restriction. If you if you reduce your calorie consumption by 30%, I call that the starve yourself 1/3 to death diet, which nobody seems to sign up for, I don’t think maybe they need a whole marketing spin. But if you do reduce your calorie consumption by 30%, you can extend your life by 30%. And that’s been proven in multip...

  • Episode 170: Alternatives To Chronic Pain – Getting The Body-Brain Connection with Rafi Salazar

Dr. Deb speaks with Rafi Salazar about chronic pain and how the body responds to pain. Using a multi-disciplinary approach to managing pain can get you free from medication.

    Do not miss these highlights:

04:15 How Rafi works with a team at the Department of Veterans Affairs in developing an integrated or multidisciplinary approach to pain management.

08:25 The BioPsychosocial Approach to pain management.

14:20 Pain is a sensory and emotional experience that is a creation of your brain based on the real or perceived tissue threat.

16:04  Sometimes our brain and our sensory system get those calls wrong,  getting a series of misinterpretations over time.

17:58 If the pain is real, all we need to do is retrain that sensory system that this isn’t dangerous, so you can start moving pain-free.

19:39 The greater issue is, patients are losing hope because they’re not being given hope by the medical system.

22:44 For the longest time, healthcare and third-party payers have kind of viewed healthcare service delivery as almost industrialized.

24:56 If you’re still experiencing pain, find somebody who is talking about Neuroscience and Pain Perception.

27:37 Other kinds of practitioners that can help you with pain management.

30:28 One of the great benefits of Telehealth is that it removes this potential danger of becoming clinician dependent.

Debra Muth 0:02Welcome to Let’s Talk Wellness Now. I’m your host, Dr. Deb. This is where we talk about everything wellness, and learn to defy aging and live our lives on our own terms.

Debra Muth 0:16Welcome back to Let’s Talk Wellness Now, I’m your host, Dr. Deb and today I’m talking with Rafi Salazar, and we’re going to talk about chronic pain and the importance in relationships between health care providers and patients. So Rafi is the principal owner of rehab you practice solutions a leader in patient retention strategy. He has experience in a variety of rehab settings working with patients recovering from various injuries and surgeries. He works as a lead clinician in the outpatient clinic at his local VA medical center, where he works on projects to improve patient and employee engagement and experience throughout the organization. Rafi led a team to roll out patient engagement initiative rooted in relationship based care. After leaving the VA right, Rafi began working as a healthcare consultant on a multimillion dollar project for Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. This project involves work related to the transition of individuals out of state institutes to community residents and establishing statewide mobile integrated clinical services for individuals on the state Medicaid waiver program. Rehab you practice solutions, helps clinics health systems and health care companies improve patient engagement and experience leading to increased revenue and lifetime patient value. He envisions a world where skilled, competent and caring clinicians serve and care for engaged patients to promote better clinical outcomes, unmatched patient satisfaction and lasting relationships. You know, I’m just going to say here, this is such a wonderful mission statement, because in today’s day, where it seems like everyone cares only about money and not about people. This is such an amazing vision. And I don’t think this country has always been in this mindset. I really do think health care people in general, were always out to help one another. And somewhere along the trajectory, things changed. And I’m not exactly sure where that was that it changed. But we became very money hungry and driven by money and things. And it’s very difficult to move away from that mindset, because we’ve been raised with that for so many years. So hearing Rafi talk about how he wants to engage patients and promote good clinical outcomes. So patients don’t keep spending their money and not getting any benefit of what they’re doing. And he wants to see patient satisfaction, this could completely redefine healthcare as we know it. And I really think this is where healthcare needs to go. And where we need to take a stand on healthcare is looking at actual patient outcomes and cost benefit ratios where everybody wins in the benefit of health care. So with that, I’m going to bring on my guest, Rafi and we are going to chat about how he’s looking at doing this.

Debra Muth 3:48So, welcome back to Let’s Talk Wellness Now. I’m your host, Dr. Deb and I’m with Rafi cells are today. And we are going to talk about chronic pain and things that you can do to help with chronic pain as well as how to establish and execute your relationship between healthcare providers and patients. So Rafi, welcome to the show.

Rafi Salazar 4:09Hey, thanks for having me.

Debra Muth 4:10Thanks for joining us. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Rafi Salazar 4:14Sure. So I’m an occupational therapist by trade and I guess my work in chronic pain and life started back in when I graduated, I went and worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs and saw a lot of veterans that were experiencing chronic pain and the time I was there was that whole 2012 through 20, like 1516 timeframe where the VA for a long time had been promoting. Basically because they had too much too many patients and not enough clinicians. They weren’t they were doing a lot of opioid treatment for pain and then all 2012 and on, it’s kind of when the FDA said no, this opioid epidemic is what it’s being called now is out of control with us. are cutting people back. And they began. Some of the stories are, were pretty horrendous. There were people have been receiving fentanyl, fentanyl patches and things like that for 15-20 years, and they went into their PCPs office. And they were basically told we have to cut you off. So these patients have, at that point builds up a dependency on these medications to manage their pain and their chronic pain. And then we’re being basically cold turkey. So-

Debra Muth 5:26yeah, no weaning process or anything with that. How terrible,

Rafi Salazar 5:31it was it was pretty rough. Sometimes there was some stuff down, but a lot of it was the the physicians themselves are scared about prescribing opioids, because they began being monitored and watched and all of that. So in an effort to keep veterans from being just dropped, right, the VA really invested a lot of time and energy and research into non pharmaceutical methods for managing chronic pain. And I was able to work with the team to develop we call it an integrated or multidisciplinary approach to pain management. And that’s kind of where where my work with pain got started. And through that, ...

15:15 How do we define allergic when compared to infection.

17:36 Both with COVID and with vaccines, it is seen that the cells can go and live in the bone marrow for decades.

19:28 COVID is such a horrible virus that can bring every tissue stress and more stress to the immune system cells.

20:49 A study says that vaccines cause reprogramming of the innate arm cells or called immune reprogramming.

23:51 Pfizer vaccine causes immune systems activity to drop.

28:12 How our immune system works in cycles, that is why patients with an autoimmune disease or even an acute disease will get relapses.

36:49 The process and factors of how people got infected with COVID, and how it is possible and entirely normal for us to develop an infection and even a disease after having the infection or vaccination

50:08 These vaccines need to be redesigned.

Debra Muth 0:17Now, I’m your host, Dr. Deb. And today I have with me Dr. Mobeen, who is going to be my guest. And I’m really excited to bring him to you. Because I found him on YouTube, as I was watching medical lectures and looking for information about not just COVID, but other medical processes, and looking for somebody who really understands the biochemistry of what’s going on. And I’ve watched probably 100 of his lectures over the last year. And I’ve been so impressed with his ability to teach and his ability to share complex information in a place where anyone without medical training, can really understand the process and what’s going on in the body. It’s been really amazing. And as for medical professionals, his lectures have been at a caliber that we understand, but also providing us the language to be able to explain it to somebody else who doesn’t have that medical background. So I wanted to bring him on to the show today so that we could have a conversation about COVID and what he’s seeing an immunity and how our immune systems are working, and why we’re responding the way we are to this virus. And what is he seeing and what does he he project over the course of the next few years that we might see as a result of this illness itself. So let me give you a little background of Dr.Mobeen. He is a physician. He’s graduated from King Edward Medical University in 1994. And after practicing clinical medicine for a few years, he continued his studies in computer science with a goal of emerging innovative technologies and health care. Dr. Mobeen dedication to innovative and pioneering medical education has been a mainstay in his life. At Dr. Mobeen Corp. He strives to create a managed marketplace for medical providers that enables them to learn medicine in conjunction with new technologies, which I’m so grateful for four. He loves painting music, medical illustrations, which you’ll find in his YouTube videos, which I find so amazing teaching, reading and playing ping pong, Dr. Mobeen, his wife Hina and two sons currently live in the heart of Silicon Valley in California. And he is amazing. You guys are gonna love him. So let’s hear a word from our sponsor. And then I’m going to bring Dr. Mobeen in and we are going to have this conversation about what can we expect from the immune system going forward in the next few years. So hang tight, and we’ll be right back.

Debra Muth 5:16So welcome back to the show I have with me Dr. Mobeen, and I’m so excited to bring this guest to you guys. Like I had said earlier, I’ve been so impressed with all of the lectures he’s been doing and all the education he’s been putting out there. And I especially love his drawings, I have to say that I’m so impressed by your drawings, because I don’t draw at all and I love watching them. And I’ve been following you for about a year now. And I’ve been super impressed with what you’re delivering from an education standpoint in medicine, and how easy you make it for people who are non medical, to understand it, as well, for those of us that are medical, you help us be able to put it into terms so that we can explain it to our patients who are non medical. So thank you for that. It’s been wonderful.

Dr. Mobeen 5:58This was the basic intent. And I think it has worked out very well for the medical students for the healthcare professionals, and for general public as well. This is a mission of Dr. Bean, as well. So it all works out.

Debra Muth 6:12That’s awesome. I love it. And I’ll keep watching and I keep sharing it. And all my practitioners at my office, I have to say they all love watching your videos as well. And we have conversations about them every week. And we tried to digest them ourselves and share them with people. So thank you for that.

Dr. Mobeen 6:30You are very welcome. I’m glad to hear that.

Debra Muth 6:33Thank you. So today we’re going to talk about the immune system and COVID. And I’d love to hear what you’re seeing on your research and the knowledge that you have about how is the immune system being affected by both the vaccine and the virus? Do we see a difference in there?

Dr. Mobeen 6:53Got it very interesting and very broad question. Let me start with this context. Even in my own talks, I sometimes miss adding this statement. And then I see that sometimes listeners just go in a rabbit hole and they get stuck there. The context is this. None of these discussions will change anything immediately in terms of understanding of the disease that we know clinically. And understanding of the vaccines as we know clinically, for example, clinically, we know that there is when 100 People become positive for COVID, about 20 or 21 will end up in hospital or then from them about another five six will end up in ICU and unfortunately about three would die as well. This is a cli...

Debra Muth 0:02Welcome to Let’s Talk Wellness Now. I’m your host, Dr. Deb. This is where we talk about everything wellness, and learn to defy aging, and live our lives on our own terms.

Debra Muth 0:15Hi, and welcome back to Let’s Talk wellness. Now I’m your host, Dr. Deb and today I want to talk to you about the drug muggers. And I’m not talking about the people that mug you for your medication for your pain medication. I want to talk to you about drugs that deplete nutrients from our bodies, and how we can become nutrient deficient without even realizing that that’s actually happening.

Debra Muth 2:04So welcome back, you’re listening to Let’s Talk Wellness Now I’m your host, Dr. Deb. And today I’m talking about the drug muggers. And what I’m talking about is a medication that depletes nutrients within your body or from your body and can cause you to have multiple side effects that we think might be side effects of the medication. But ultimately, it can be side effects because you’re nutrient deficient in something. Now, this is a really common problem that most of this time doctors don’t talk about. And it’s it’s so important to understand which nutrients are being depleted from your body when you’re taking these medications. They literally steal your nutrition and steal your nutrients. So I want to point out just a couple of pieces of medications that can cause problems for you today. And then now as a naturopath and a nurse practitioner. I’ve been prescribing pharmaceuticals for 25 years. And I can tell you, they can be extremely helpful. You know, they can help get you out of pain, they can help you breathe better, they can help alleviate allergy symptoms and seizure activity, which is all huge and it’s all very important for us. But while we’re fixing one problem with a pharmaceutical, we can oftentimes create another problem. And also ultimately the effects of nutrient depletion can leave us with nagging aches and pains and focus and concentration issues as well. You see, there’s about there’s millions of people slipping through the cracks every single day with drug cause nutrient deficiencies, and they get sicker and sicker each and every year, the system gets so out of whack that people think it’s normal to see eight or nine different medical practitioners for the same ailment. And I’ve literally seen patients see 50 to 100 doctors for the same problems and not get any answers. And sometimes it’s a single nutrient that’s deficient and sometimes it’s an infection that’s causing these problems for you. And so I think it’s really important if you’re on pharmaceutical medications to understand which nutrients might be depleted as a result of that medication that you’re taking. As we all know, people get started on one medication and then they get another medication and another medication and another medication and before you know it there could be four or five medications given simply to alleviate a side effect that’s been created by one particular.

Debra Muth 5:00So the RDA or recommended daily allowance is set up by a regulatory agency to tell us how many nutrients we should have every single day of B, vitamin C, iron, sodium, potassium, all of those things. Now, this was set up back in the 50s. And it has never been changed. So the same levels of nutrients that they thought we needed in the 50s is what we need today. Now keep in mind, our soils are extremely depleted of nutrients. And most of the food we consume is nutrient deficient. It’s junk food, it’s not it doesn’t have a lot of nutrients in it. But yet, we’re still saying we need the same daily allowance as we needed in 1950. And I’ll tell you today, that if you were to consume a bowl of spinach from 1950, to get the same nutrient levels that you had, then you would have to consume 20 to 30 bowls of spinach today to get the same nutrition value that we had back in the 50s. So it’s very different. And we are not getting a lot of these nutrients in our foods and in our food supply. And then we’re taking a whole bunch of medications these days that deplete those nutrients on top of things. So I want to encourage you guys to get there’s a book actually called Drug Muggers. And it’s really great. It’s written by Susie Cohen. And she goes through all of the different medications and lists each and every nutrient that’s depleted from these medications. Now, the word “drug mugger” is actually a noun. And it applies to over the counter medication and prescription medications not just pharmaceuticals that are prescribed but over the counter medications as well. That can get rid of these vitamins, minerals, hormones, nutrients, things like that.

Debra Muth 7:08For instance, if you take an acid blocker, something like proper said Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac, those kinds of things, they actually deplete our zinc level and smoking itself. So the nicotine from smoking depletes vitamin C. And you can see that a lot of these things are going to deplete different nutrients and sometimes many of the same. So we’ll go through just a couple of them here for you to give you an example of what it’s like when you’re looking at medications and which supplements you need to be replacing.

Debra Muth 7:44So I thought I’d start out with some common diagnoses and what some of the deficiencies are. So if people are suffering from depression, osteoporosis and irregular heartbeat, these are typically a mineral deficiency, specifically magnesium, and magnesium depletes female hormones. It’s depleted in diuretics, something called a VISTA, which is what we use for bone loss, anti inflammatories, and aspirin. All of these things deplete our mineral magnesium, and when minerals like magnesium are depleted, we don’t sleep as well. We’re more anxious, we have leg cramping. There’s all kinds of problems heart problems, specifically like heart palpitations, heart racing, this heart feels like it’s pounding through your chest that can all come from a single simple magnesium deficiency. Now, people who have bald patches in their hair, they have a loss of taste or smell. They have erectile dysfunction and chronic diarrhea. And these are all individually they’re not all together. These are conditions that are very commonly seen with zinc deficiency. And common drug muggers for zinc are anti inflammatories, antibiotics, and acids, ulcer, heartburn, medication, diuretics, and some estrogen products can do that same thing. Now for people who are suffering from leg cramps at night or muscle spasms, memory loss and fatigue. Any of these conditions can be a deficiency in CO q 10. And CO Q 10 is a life sustaining antioxidant. It gets demolished by hundreds of medications including things like statin...

Debra Muth 3:20Welcome back to Let’s Talk wellness. Now I’m your host, Dr. Deb and I have with you today Dr. Joel Khan. He is amazing. I’ve been following him for years and I can’t wait to have this conversation with him about cardiovascular disease and heavy metals. So Dr. Cohn, welcome to the show.

Dr. Joel Kahn 3:36Thank you so much.

Debra Muth 3:37So Dr. Kahn tell us a little bit about yourself.

Dr. Joel Kahn 3:41Sure, I am in my clinical office. I’m an active cardiologist in suburban Detroit, Michigan, grew up about two miles away a really exotic upbringing. In terms of just still practicing so close to my original home. I did wander out of state for a number of years to do cardiology trainings. And I came back to Michigan long ago, 32 years ago. And if anybody wonders if they’re watching this amount of treadmill desk, which is my routine, throughout the whole day, eight hours a day I walk, seeing patients whether they be by zoom or in my office, hopefully it won’t be distracting. But um, I wander back to Michigan and have stayed here for 32 years but in the course of a very conventional cardiology life, treating heart attacks bypass patients stent patients, cholesterol blood pressure, I had adopted a whole food plant based vegan diet at age 18. And by the time I started practicing cardiology, it struck me there’s data coming out that this might be a therapy I should share with patients. So I’ve really had a privilege of being you know, nutrition and forward focused throughout medical school residency fellowship, and every patient I’ve ever seen has gotten a little indoctrination about food as medicine So, about seven years ago, I ditched the old life and completely changed to what I’ll do till I’m hopefully 128 years old as a cardiologist, which is preventive cardiology, reversal cardiology, integrative cardiology, and we do a lot of high tech stuff to identify how much disease burden you have. And then we do a lot of non prescription therapy to try and improve upon it. If there’s a problem.

Debra Muth 5:30That’s awesome. I love that idea of truly fixing the problem or getting to the root of the problem and trying to change it from a lifestyle aspect instead of waiting, and saying, Well, there’s nothing we can do until an episode happens until you have a heart attack or a stroke, or you’ve got a blockage somewhere, and now we come in and intervene.

Dr. Joel Kahn 5:53Right. And, you know, it can work at any stage in life, I do see a lot of people and I’ve followed a lot of people for decades that have had their heart attack or bypass or stroke, but up out of, you know, grave concern, they come to the conclusion, or they were taught that conclusion. It’s never too late. And you don’t want to have that happen a second time. But you know, a lot of my practice are people that on the outside looks perfectly fine. And they basically walk in say, Just take me a buyer told me the reality, put me back together and patch me up, like my 30,000 mile car checkup. You know, people don’t know if they have damaged arteries are not 10 years before their heart attack. But that’s what the technology is very simple. And then you can really make a big difference so that you never have those procedures or life altering events, or even life shortening events.

Debra Muth 6:46That’s amazing. So how do you look at somebody to see if there’s artery damage for them before they know there’s a problem present?

Dr. Joel Kahn 6:54Yeah, in addition to the ever present, very detailed history, physical exam might give a little about the one historical besides obviously, have you been a smoker and diabetic blood pressure and your diet and your sleep and your stress and your dental health? A man with erectile dysfunction, which is extremely common, you know, maybe 50% of men by age 50, or 60 are struggling with that. That’s always a clue that they may have clogged arteries, bad vascular supply. There are other causes, but that should never be overlooked. There’s a very unusual physical exam finding not in terms of its frequency in terms of its use, but it’s called a diagonal ear lobe crease. It was described in the 1970s by ...

Welcome back to Let’s Talk Wellness Now. I’m your host, Dr. Deb and I have with me today Candace Plattor. And we are going to talk about love with boundaries. And she was going to tell us a very personal story about how she got involved in this. So Candace, welcome to the show.

Candace Plattor 4:51Hello. Hi, Dr. Deb and everyone.

Debra Muth 4:54Well welcome. So Candace, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Candace Plattor 4:58Well, I An addictions therapist in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. And I have been doing this workload at what I do specifically is I work with the families of people who are addicted. I also work with the addicts but I, I primarily work I specialize in working with the families because, you know, they’re suffering and struggling right along with the addicts they love so much. And there’s so little help for them out there.

Debra Muth 5:31Absolutely. I’m so glad that you’re doing that.

Candace Plattor 5:34Thank you. Yeah, yeah. So. So I’ve been doing that work for about 30 years now. And I myself 34 years clean and sober.

    Debra Muth 5:48Congratulations!

Candace Plattor 5:50thank you. And July, it will be 35 years. And this occurred because I have Crohn’s disease. And I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease about 50 years ago, when nobody knew about Crohn’s disease. Nobody knew what it was. Nobody was really diagnosing it. In fact, I was often told that it was in my head, which it was not, you know. And I was very sick, and very unhappy. And what the doctors in the early 70s, what the doctors did was, because they didn’t know what else to do for me. And so they threw a lot of addictive medications at me. So they gave me things like Valium and out of them and they gave me things like OxyContin and codeine and morphine. And they kept renewing the prescriptions. They kept refilling the prescriptions like month after month, year after year, and I started smoking more pot, which I had used recreationally it wasn’t a problem before that, but it really helped the symptoms and it helped. It helped the shame of that kind of disease. So for anybody who doesn’t know, Crohn’s disease is an inflammat...

  • Episode 163: What Does COVID Long Haulers And Lyme Have In Common

What are the similarities to COVID and Lyme? What tests can be done to monitor the effects of COVID disease and long haulers? Dr. Deb shares the testing that you can ask your doctor for and how to interpret these results. She also gives you common supplements that can help reverse the inflammation and microvessel clotting that occurs from the disease.

    Do not miss these highlights:

00:26 The common COVID Long Haulers symptoms that we see with other bacterias and viruses

01:18  COVID Long Haulers tend to mimic a lot of other diseases, but COVID can also activate or reactivate underlying viruses that have been laying dormant in your body for a very long time

02:41 Just because your symptoms resolve for a week or two, doesn’t mean that they’re going to completely resolve

03:53 In the UK,  they stopped some of the vaccination studies because it was causing people to have a false positive HIV result

04:32 Tips and recommendations to ask your healthcare practitioner to test for at least once a year, if not every six months, whether you’ve had the COVID vaccine or you’ve had the COVID illness

06:58 Functional Medicine interventions for people who test positive or have elevated numbers of D-dimer

08:59 The whole concept of doing testing is to prevent disease and prevent further inflammatory conditions. We don’t want this to go on for so long, that it will be damaging and will be difficult to reverse

10:13 If you’re still having a Long Haulers issue, it’s not going to be something that you fix overnight, it’s going to take time, so work with a practitioner that understands these protocols

Welcome to Let’s Talk Wellness Now. I’m your host, Dr. Deb. This is where we talk about everything wellness, and learn to defy aging, and live our lives on our own terms.

Hello, and welcome back to Let’s Talk Wellness Now podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Deb. And today I want to talk to you about Lyme disease and COVID long haulers and what they have in common. So with COVID, long haulers, when we talk about those symptoms, brain fog, fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, those are common symptoms that we see with other bacterias. And viruses, like Lyme disease, like HHV, six, like the herpes families, viruses, all of them tend to overlap, including Epstein Barr Virus, which is the virus that causes moto. And sometimes it can be difficult for us to figure out which bacteria or viruses causing the problem for you. And oftentimes, it’s more than one, it’s never just one thing. So there are tests available for us to determine whether or not you have viruses and bacteria, we can do that by blood testing, we can do that by something called a bio scan or biofeedback testing. And it gives us a little bit better idea of what we’re dealing with. Now, COVID and COVID long haulers tend to mimic a lot of these other diseases but what we’re also seeing is that COVID can activate or reactivate underlying viruses that have been laying dormant in your body for a very long time, especially the herpes family virus. We’ve seen a lot over the last six months of people who’ve had dormant herpes viruses in their body, get COVID and all of a sudden, here comes this herpes virus, again, more cold sores, more vaginal outbreaks, more shingle type activity. So all of these are part of the herpes family virus, and all of them can cause problems for you. And we want to get those under control as quickly as we can to keep you healthy, and to keep you strong, and to stop you from triggering other bacterias and viruses and decreasing the immune system. So I think it’s really important for us to understand what’s happening with this COVID virus. And I will tell you this, things are changing moment to moment, day to day. So the information that you have today may be different tomorrow. And you can’t be upset about that you have to remember that this is a brand new virus in our environment. We are learning new things every single day about it. Some of it is good, some of it is not so good. But nonetheless, we’re learning. And that’s what we do in medicine. That’s why we call it practicing medicine, because sometimes we don’t have all the answers to what’s going on. Now, there are a good amount of my lyme patients who’ve said, Hey, I got the vaccine. And all of my Lyme symptoms have gone away. What is this about?

Well, we’re not exactly sure why symptoms go away. But we do know that it has to do with the immune system. Our best guess is that most likely, these people will develop symptoms again down the road, it’s just a matter of time. So keep an eye out for that. Just because your symptoms resolve for a week or two doesn’t mean that they’re going to completely resolve and certainly would not be a reason to run out and take the vaccination. I don’t recommend that anyone take the COVID-19, quote unquote, vaccine, because in my opinion, it is a viral weapon. It is not a vaccine. It has four amino acids or four molecules of the HIV virus inserted into it. And in part, there’s been conversation about them trying to get another HIV vaccine, which was tried and failed in the 80s, early 90s. And they were looking to this vaccine to do something similar. However, in the UK, they actually stopped some of the vaccination studies because it was causing people to have a false positive HIV result. Now that’s concerning to me. If it’s positive now, why won’t it be positive a year from now? Could it be positive two years from now? Will it trigger AIDS? And the truth of the matter is we don’t know. And this is a scary thing, because we originally thought all of these problems and concerns would only show up in people who had taken the vaccine. But now we know that is not true. These things can happen to people who have experienced the infection itself. So here are a couple of tips that I want to give you whether you’ve had the COVID vaccine or you’ve had the COVID illness itself. Here are some things that I would recommend that you ask your healthcare practitioner to test for at least once a year, if not every six months. My preference would be every six months, so that we could see a timeline and we could catch something sooner than later.

The first thing is something called an ANA level and anti nuclear antibody It measures autoimmune disease, we know that there’s going to be a significant increased risk of autoimmune disease in the next 10 years because of COVID itself. So get an annual ANA, make sure that you’re not triggering an autoimmune disease. If you have joint pain and joint inflammation, I would ask for a set rate, and a C reactive protein, so a CRP highly sensitive. So it’s a CRP HS, or C reactive protein highly sensitive. These things will tell us how much inflammation is going on in your body. Any traditional doctor can run these tests, any doctor will understand what their meaning is when they come back, abnormal or normal.

Now, the other thing I would ask for is a CD count. So CD four, CD eight, CD 57. Some people call this a CD 57 cascade, this tells us how your immune system is actually functioning. And if your immune system is starting to decline, that means you can’t fight off bacteria and viruses like you should. And this will be able to see this early on instead of waiting until your CD levels are so low that the immune system is not functioning at all. This is what doctors Zelanco calls vaids vaccine induced aids, but I think it’s the wrong term at this point. Since we know this can happen with the vaccine or with the virus, I think it should probably be called viral induced AIDS. But that’s just my opinion.

Now some other things that you can test for, especially if you had taken the vaccine is something called a D dimer, enter troponin level, the D dimer measures micro vessel clotting, do you have this small clotting that’s occurring inside the vessel wall that can lead to blood clots lead to stroke and lead to heart attack. If these numbers are elevated, we can easily come in and treat them. One caveat, I will say we’ve had many people test positive for a D dimer over the last year. And when we send them off to cardiology, the cardiologist blows them off and just says, Hey, that number is not high enough for us to worry about. We’re not going to do anything, and we’re not going to repeat it. In my world of functional medicine. That is the worst thing that we could do is ignore something today. Because tomorrow, it could be worse and a week from now, it could be worse yet. So we would recommend intervening and using things that help to thin the blood. baby aspirin, there’s a product called vein light that works amazing. There’s something called natto kinase, or lumbo kinase. All of these things help to thin the blood. Now, I will tell you this, if you’re already on something to thin the blood, please do not add these things. Ask your healthcare practitioner, whether or not these are safe for you to take because not everybody can take these and not have a complication. So definitely look at that, that your opponent level actually measures what’s happening with the heart and is there heart damage going on there. So when we talk about something called myocarditis, what we’re looking at is that inflammation or infection of the heart, and the troponin level helps identify that. So those are two major things. Now I’ve seen said rates be elevated post illness, two to three weeks, and then eight to 10 weeks, they’re normal again. So I would encourage you if these are abnormal, go ahead work with a functional medicine practitioner. And you can work with any of the practitioners here at Serenity Health Care Center to manage these symptoms for you, or your own health care practitioners if they’re knowledgeable in this COVID world and do some things to decrease the inflammation and then retest them again, maybe six to eight weeks later, see if they’re still abnormal, and then implement more lifestyle changes, dietary changes, like the AIP diet LDN other things. skullcap is a great herb that we can use to help reduce inflammation and get this under control sooner than later. The whole concept of doing this kind of testing is to prevent disease and to prevent further inflammatory conditions, which is the root of all age related conditions. And we don’t want this to go on for so long, that it’s difficult to reverse or there’s already so much damage that we’re not going to be able to reverse this thing. Now you’ve heard me talk on this show before about Dr. Patterson. And I’ve had Dr. Patterson on my show. And if you’re interested in learning about his post COVID long haulers protocol, just hop over over and listen to that episode on letstalkwellnessnow.com. But Dr. Patterson has a protocol of using HIV medications. And then using other anti inflammatory medications like statin drugs, and antidepressants and a few other things we’ve added to this protocol from a natural perspective. We’ve added things like Ketotifen LDN, into histamines, other herbs and certainly dietary changes to reduce the inflammation in the body. At this point. It works wonderfully but I will tell you it is not an overnight fix for most people, most people are struggling, if they’ve been sick for a while, or had COVID 15 to 18 months ago, it’s going to take time to reverse this, if you’re still having a long Hollars issue, it’s not going to be something that you fix overnight, it’s not going to be something that’s going to be gone in two or three weeks, it’s going to take time. And I would encourage you to really work with a practitioner that understands these protocols, you can certainly reach out to Dr. Patterson’s group, the COVID long haulers group, and they have doctors that will work with you. However, when they give you the protocol, you’re still going to need a doctor that can prescribe locally for you. So you’re going to want to enlist your primary health care practitioner, or your functional medicine doctor to help you prescribe these medications. If not, please seek out somebody that can help you and really understands this COVID Long Haul or illness, and how it’s reactivating other illnesses and other bacterias at this time, because it is something that we’re going to live with for many, many years if we don’t get this under control now. And if we wait too long, we’re going to have problems. The sooner we can get on top of these things, the better off we’re going to be. So I hope this short video has helped you understand COVID, long haulers, reactivation of Epstein Barr Virus, and how to actually treat some of these COVID long collar symptoms, and how to ask an advocate for tests that you want, so that you can follow yourself, you can follow with somebody that understands what’s going on. And again, if they don’t understand or you, they tell you that it’s not a concern, because it’s just slightly over the normal range. Please reach out to a functional medicine practitioner who understands this, that can help you along the way, because any abnormality in a test is not normal. We have set our normal ranges so wide already that once it’s outside the normal range, it’s really abnormal. And we don’t want to have problems with that. We don’t want to see it continue. So again, I hope this was helpful. If you need a health care practitioner, please reach out to us at Serenity Health Care Center comm we’re happy to help you. I have a full team of practitioners that are used to working with all age groups from new birth to the elderly 100+, and we’re all here to help you live your life and have the happiest fulfilling healthiest life you possibly can.
