  • Marketing & Communications intersects with all other areas of Libraries - with Cordelia Anderson

In this episode I'm super excited to talk with Cordelia Anderson, the author of Library Marketing and Communications: Strategies to Increase Relevance and Results, from ALA Editions. I've taken her bio from her website to share here with you all:

She is a seasoned marketing and communications executive with 20+ years of experience. She is based in Charlotte, NC but has clients around the US and is nationally recognized for her innovative, strategic and results-driven marketing and communications programs. Clients have included public and academic libraries, library associations, local government agencies and nonprofits.

Cordelia is Accredited in Public Relations from the Public Relations Society of America, which indicates advanced mastery of the knowledge, skills and abilities to practice public relations. She uses this approach to help her clients solve complex marketing and communications challenges so that they can tell their stories and reach their goals.

There are a few books Cordelia mentions during the interview and they are:

    • Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey

    • Meatball Sundae: Is Your Marketing out of Sync? by Seth Godin

    • Public Relations Strategies & Tactics

Here's the link to Seth Godin's blog!

  • Building a marketing department, and successful marketing campaigns with Meghan McCorkell

In this episode, I welcome Meghan McCorkell to the podcast. She is the Chief of Marketing Communications and Strategy at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, a large library system in Baltimore. She has extensive professional experience in Journalism and storytelling, has won multiple John Cotton Dana Awards, and discusses the many events she and her team have run successful campaigns for! Meghan finds inspiration from other libraries rather than books, which I totally relate to. Thank you Meghan!

  • Don't market everything to everyone; focus on specific things - with Chris Boivin

In this episode, I interview Chris Boivin, Assistant Director of Community Relations and Marketing for the Jacksonville Library system, which has 21 locations serving a large population in Florida. Chris has spent over 7 years in this position, co-managing an exceptionally talented team, and learning a lot along the way. He shares his insight gained from running marketing campaigns, and how it's really not about what "you're" trying to get your patrons, cardholders, users, or customers (however your library labels your guests) to do, it's more about how to figure out what they like, send them that, and that is what conveys the value of your library. Chris also talks about responsive design, emails, the importance of clear CTAs (call to action), and notes that Donald Miller's book "Building a Storybrand" has had a large influence on his work.

Chris also mentions Angela Hursh's fantastic blog, Super Library Marketing, which can be read at: superlibrarymarketing.com.

Chris hosts, plans, and runs a monthly book club specifically for library marketing that meets on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/librarymarketingbookclub/

His book club hosts the authors, does Q & A, and invites you to vote on the next book they will read. Chris' book club also has a website in which he posts past meeting recordings. Visit www.librarymarketingbookclub.org to browse and signup to receive emails.
