What would have made Apocalypse: Underwater City better?

What could Chrissy Peebles have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It wasn't a book, it was an advertisement, and read like a student project. Awful. I read several reviews that talked about how awesome this was, but I suspect friends and family.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narration was the worst I have ever heard. Amateurish, mumbles, rushed, couldn't differentiate characters. I will never but anything with that narrator, and will likely not choose an ebook from that author if their choice of narrators gives me a hint as to their judgement.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It was so bad it actually irritated me.

This book is punishment

I had to force myself to finish this book. The writing its sophomoric at best. She used just about every cliche available. She constantly used vernacular that would have faded after so many years in isolation. There were no idioms that would have naturally came about in a closed society. Then there is the narration. Oh my Lord, take the candy out of your mouth before you start narrating a story, Her cadence was horrible. It was like a bad Christopher Walken impersonation. Breaths on the wrong places and conversations not broken up, but ran together as if from one character.

not what I expected

I've read almost everything that F. Paul Wilson has written. I have no doubt that he had very little to do with this book even though he is given first credit. Not his style, not his voice and nothing of what makes his books great. I gave it three stars because it was a well thought out plot and an enjoyable enough read, but I won't be going out of my way to recommend it.

An Enjoyable Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

The apocalypse is on in A Necessary End. These days zombies, aliens, or a major environmental event tend to be what brings about the end of things, but in this novel, it is something more realistic, a plague that results from flies, which is a bit of an old-school concept considering the history of our planet and the diseases brought about by flies. The novel is set in the UK where Nigel is a reporter trying to uncover the start of the plague. Abby is his wife, who is among the many religious folk who seem to give up on finding a cure and have just accepted this as the will of God. People are dropping like flies (pun intended) while some crazed survivors are making things worse by purposely trying to spread the plague.

This is a tightly plotted novel, with a great deal of suspense. There are some good horror elements involved in the novel. The characters are good and bad. I think Nigel was a well-developed character, but I found Abby to be really annoying. Her fatalism and hard-headed beliefs wore on me as the novel progressed. The novel gets into heavy religious and philosophical debates.

Sad male fantasy.

I found this book to not really hold my interest, but I kept going hoping it would get better. Eventually we get a female character who sounds like she is a middle aged waitress in an interstate cafe, but she's a totally hot "well endowed with slender frame" high tech hacker. After another while, main character and she get in a sexual relationship where he does stuff like holds his hand over her mouth, chokes her etc. I was still thinking that maybe the story could outweigh this objectionable part, but in short order, main character starts bossing around girlfriend like she is a bad child and she gets "turned on" by it. Yuck, grow up boys. This is not the way to get girlfriends, believe me. Returning book.

If you like hearing the f word...

i did not like. i did not finish. it was a waste of my money. I kept waiting for something that would make me want to keep reading. I didn't.

My mistake

Never should have ordered this. This isnt for someone who has read or listened to the book. There is no information worth listening to in this. You will get a whole lot more if you just read Ender's Game. Very basic going over of one of the best book i have ever read. Complete waste of my time!

Super

If Indian fiction isn't a genre than Samit Basu has created it.

Revolving around the lives of passengers who were on a flight and somehow gain super powers, this book spins an interesting and entertaining yarn. The characters are likable, the powers are creative and although cliche at times, the book knows this and pokes fun at itself.

It's a quick listen and Ramon Tikaram does an excellent narration.

If you enjoy this book I recommend checking out Basu' other series The Gameworld trilogy. Also read by Ramon Tikaram.

Meh.

Starts well, it's funny and entertaining and it manages to avoid cliche, but about half way in, it just... dies. Its narrative stops moving, it turns inward and it becomes very boring, despite it being very well read. I stopped listening at about 75%, I may pick it up again one day, but only if there's really nothings else to listen to.

Definitely not Bollywood

This is not usually my usual genre but I thought I'd give it a try. The story was fairly unusual but the characters were interesting which kept my interest and there were a few twists in the tale.

I only downloaded this book in a BOGOF deal, and if I had read the reviews more closely I don't think I would have bothered - BUT - I am glad I did. What a pleasant surprise to encounter a simple story, that kept me guessing a little, and made me smile a few times. So, yes, I would recommend it.

It's not in English

It MIGHT be a great book, but I wouldn't know as it's in French. The seller didn't tell me THAT.

Title kind of says it all, but if you buy this book and you live in the US/UK/Aus/NZ/Canada (etc etc) make sure and double check that the copy you're buying is in English. Seems like the seller would have mentioned that at some point, but they didn't. So now I have a book that I was dying to read, but can't.

I guess I could always learn French huh? =)

A post-apocalypse subsistence economy

This book was surprisingly good. The title put me off, since I inferred that it attributed the collapse of civilization to some silly supernatural struggle, like "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon, which I bought and barely began reading before I dropped it in disappointment. (Not that all supernaturally inspired apocalypses are bad stories: I really liked "The Stand" by Stephen King.) In fact, Malevil is simply the name of the little French community where the story occurs. It is a pretty good story about a subsistence economy arising after a nuclear holocaust. Unfortunately, you never find out what is happening in the world outside that little community, but it is pretty good nevertheless: there is no backstory about the disintegration or reconstitution of the national government, which is the part that I usually enjoy the most in post-apocalyptic fiction, but there is an amusing thread about the basis for the local ecclesiastical jurisdiction where the protagonist relies on some medieval warrants in order to trump the religious charlatan who has established himself as the ruler in the next town over.

WELCOME TO THE OORT CLOUD

This is extremely good. A know that Military Science Fiction Fans will love this. I am not a Military Science Fiction Fan, but I am a Smart Science Fan. Heppner uses his head to figure his way out of what seems an impossible situation. A group of Space Marines spend two years in space to track down and kill these Cyborgs who are superior to them in every way. It takes cunning and lots of smarts. A love the science in this and I love that it takes place in the Oort cloud.

As I have mentioned before, Heppner like Larson does not write literature, but they write about things we want to know about. They are always interesting.

Mark Boyett does a great job, which makes the listening better then the reading, although if I find the hard copy I will buy it for my collection.

Makes your skin crawl thinking about them. Great Story. Lots of action and Drama. Great Narration.

I loved Catskinner. The character was so different from most fantasy characters nowadays.

There are many great scenes. I liked the Bowling alley scene and when he finds out what Godiva is. Very unexpected.

This is different from any fantasy out there. I've read many in the last year. I just could not put this one down. The narrator is very good. I bought this book without any reviews and I am glad that I did.

Original and Exciting Read!

Fanstastic book! Dark, funny, sexy - keeps you on the edge of your seat. Every character is very original and a mystery unto him/her/itself. I love that there is no predicting what might happen next and often laughed out loud while listening.

Both the narrator and the writing are excellent and make this book extremely hard to put down. Luckily, I have it on authority that the second book will hopefully be out on audio in January. I am eagerly awaiting the release!

Kept me curious

What made the experience of listening to Catskinner's Book the most enjoyable?

With any audio book it requires a good narrator.... I feel otherwise the listener gets irritated and looses interest. I think what really helped me get into the book was the clear transition between character voices. The narrator had a very distinct and different voice for each character which really helped me visualize the storyline and kept me interested.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Catskinner's Book?

A little shocked when "Godiva" was revealed

The book is a little sci-fi'ish for me but after a friend told me to give it a shot I was surprised to find myself enjoying it. The beginning of the book peaked my interest and kept me curious which made me want to keep listening. Overall I'm glad I listened to it and recommend it to anyone who may like a touch of Sci-fi in their books.

Fabulous story, great reader

When this story first started, it reminded me of Joseph Nassise's Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles--stories I particularly enjoy. However, it quickly carved it's own niche and took a different direction to that I was expecting. I was glad of that.

The concept is an interesting one.
