What I 'Should Have' Learned from Sci Fi

False Idols is a good book set in the not too distant future It deals with several uncomfortable themes: a possible downside of our quickly developing technology, the human desire for the ultimate improvements to the human race in mind & body, the ease in which a small group of people can have a great influence over the world, and potentially cause a police state to be put into effect due to the actions of that small group of people.

Sadly while the narrator, Adam Zens, does grow on you, his narration is too fast and the serious lack of punctuation made the story hard to follow at times, though some of this could be a result of the editors. I started & stopped this book a few times before biting the bullet letting it play all the way through. In addition to slowing the pace and more use of punctuation, I would like to see him be a little more consistent with the distinct voices of the lead characters.

False Idols is a Science fiction that could become reality as an elite few who, thanks to pre-existing vast wealth, can afford the inordinately expensive Mindwave technology that makes them superior to their fellow humans. However, once they become Aeons, they proudly proclaim themselves as False Idols.

Narration Terrible, I quit listening.

I'm sorry to say I did not complete this book, in fact I didn't make it ten minutes before I had to shut it off. I'm not sure how the author allowed this to be published in this form. The book literally sounds like a machine is reading it, the intonation in all wrong the words are not pronounced correctly, and there are no pauses in the reading. Usually I will try to out last an annoying narrator, but no way could I listen to this "person" for ten hours.

I gave the story four stars because I didn't want to ding the author for the poor narration, but I don't actually know if the story is good.

Super-Tech Sci-Fi Adventure

I started with this book without having read the first two in the series. After listening to this book, I will probably go back and listen to the others. I was impressed after the first 30 or 40 minutes.

The story focuses on the main character, a female Admiral. In order to find out more about a ship that is intercepting and kidnapping skilled crews, she goes undercover as recently court-martialed and on her way to a prison colony. What she and her fellow prisoners discover is an alien race that while technologically inferior, is of unbelievable size and has managed to create a technology to travel to parallel realities. after being taken prisoner and taken to their reality, she discovers that the aliens that have taken them are part of a small group of the alien race that may not be what they seem.

Along the way, they discover another alien race thought long-dead, but could now be a potential ally against their new enemy.

I call this a "Super Tech Sci-Fi Adventure" because of some of the technology used by the Admiral. While I still liked the story and I found all of the concepts interesting, I thought that some of the tech was closer to magic than conceivable technical achievement.

Also, the narrator was very good, but some of the very obvious mispronunciations drove me crazy sometimes. While she was a good performer, I can't give anything more than 3 stars to her for constantly annoying me. If your not OCD like me, then it probably won't bother you, though.

This was worth the listen, but you don't have to have listened to the other books to enjoy it.

Let's kick some galactic karma!

The hero Spartan and his sidekick, the giant Jotnar warrior Khan, are back to kick some galactic karma, this time after a failed Helion rescue of prisoners of war.

A division of rookie marines are dispatched to peel open a heavily fortified enemy city, but the resulting bloodbath lands on the wrong side of the war and the marines are slaughtered. This rescue needs experienced soldiers and much bigger guns.

My favorite quotes from the book:

"Space really is a cold, murderous place."

"We will win, or we will die on our feet."

Plasma cannons, Maverick armor with hands like sledgehammers, coilguns, exoskeleton suits,

Mauler ships and Hammerhead gunships â these are just a few items in the sci fi military arsenal that gives non-stop action.

Then when a seemingly derelict spaceship appears, it's Uh-Oh time â an excellent mystery floating in dead space, both innocent and dangerous, embroiled in an even deeper mystery of mythological proportions. How much would you risk to solve the greatest mystery in the known universe?

Ghost Soldiers reminded me a bit of an episode from the original Star Trek series, called The Doomsday Machine, where a giant machine traveled through the universe destroying planets. Star Trek's doomsday machine wiped out its builders, but for eons after continued its journey through space to wreak death and destruction indiscriminately.

The derelict ship in Ghost Soldiers holds secrets far more compelling than the Star Trek doomsday machine, however, secrets that threaten to unravel the entire structure of the Alliance. Who built it? And why? What was its original purpose? Benign, or malignant?

I enjoyed Lords of War, the first book in this series, but I absolutely LOVED the derelict ship mystery in Ghost Soldiers.

He told the story really well....would I say his narration was flawless? No, but he is a good story teller...and I was completely interested the whole way through!

I really liked this story, and listened all at once....its not very long, but I was completely engaged all the way through...and the ending wasn't as complex as I would of liked it to be, but I was ok with it...Basically we have Brad who is kinda a geeky weirdo, but brilliant and insecure about himself...comes with the territory of budding geniuses...as Brad states very sad, but cleverly, that the women that would not date him now, would fall all over him in his 40s...Its kind of a shame, because he did have a lot to offer...He created this magnificent android and names her Trisha....she is beautiful and smart, and has a thirst for knowledge and can feel...she loves Brad, but he gets greedy and in the end really pays an ultimate price...just really shows you how ID and EGO really can destroy someone...

Good story, very interesting, and solid narration...I recommend!

The author has created a new world in Re-Wired that is totally different and believable. This is a world that we could find ourselves living in if the brilliant minds of today become focused on turning robots into undetectable androids. If you read the news, we are already in this situation.

Interesting take on an old concept

What an odd book. I literally just finished this and I'm not entirely sure how I felt about it. It had a definite 'gollum' type story to it (not LOTR but the legend of clay people brought to life). I'm not sure if it's a re-telling or not.

I think part of the reason I can't decide how I feel about the actual story is because of the narration. It felt like the narrator was reading the sentences for the first time, causing odd breaks where there shouldn't be, statements read as questions and vice versa. There was a feeling that the narrator was constantly distracted.

I'm disappointed at the lack of quality and that audible would allow such a poorly produced title on their site.

Gritty sci-fi detective story

Jeff Edwards's Dome City Blues is a detective tale set in Los Angeles in the 2060's following environmental collapse such that the population lives under domes for survival. The story is told in the style of Raymond Chandler with a cinematic film noir feel. The main character is a former detective dragged back into the game by a beautiful damsel in distress trying to prove her brother who confessed and committed suicide was not a serial killer. All the characters are either damaged or carrying excess baggage as they attempt to eke out a minimal existence in a stagnant world.

The sci-fi elements consist of environmental collapse, AIs, electronic implants, and medical technology blurring the lines between humans and machines.The detective tradecraft is well done with subtle clues aligned with the advanced technology. Although there is cyberpunk tendencies, the story is mostly a solid detective tale with plenty of red herrings, false leads, and significant plot twists.

The narration is quite well done with an excellent range of voices, solid pacing matched by tone and mood that aligns nicely with the storyline.

Excellent CyberPunk

Take a heartbroken and hardened gumshoe in a near-future, semi-dystopian setting and a beautiful client wanting to prove her brother innocent of a closed, iron-clad guilty serial murder case and you have the makings of an entertaining novel. And, in fact, that is what it was. My only criticism was that by 3/4ths of the way through, the author boxed himself in as to who the puppet-master was.

The writing was very good; as well as the performance of the narrator.

Vol. 2 in Fine Space Opera

Good space opera is always welcome, and this series appears to fit the bill. "Cat" Kimbridge is a fine heroine with some awesome special capabilities courtesy of an advanced alien race known as Heshe. The universe is "peopled" with a variety of races, all welcomed by humanity in stark contradiction to our own history of tribal, religious and racial conflicts. The first two stories are fast-paced and interesting. In "Redemption" an alien hive mind proves dangerously formidable, and is presented in a novel way.

This volume was a bit abbreviated, which is not a true failing to someone who grew up reading Ace doubles. It ended at an appropriate point but at the 80 percent mark, with the remainder taken up by a long preview of the next volume. No complaints here, but be forewarned.

My sole criticism comes from an important part of the story, but I found it to be implausible and contrary to what I understood to be the character's personality. I won't say more lest it be a spoiler.

The Best Star Trek out there

The good: it's a story about space exploration, with new and intriguing concepts for aliens (as opposed to "tiger-men" or humans with broccoli glued to the foreheads). There's some good science and a few good plot twists. Also, the characters are good people, and don't apologise for it. It's refreshing.

the bad: it could use some more tension. All characters (with one notable exception) are always calm and collected, they never lose their... calm.

the ugly: none, really. It might not be a edge-of-your seats reading, but it has some really good ideas and no weak parts.

It's not perfect, but it's way better than most Space operas / military Sci Fi i've seen around.

Note: This is Volume 2 in the series and I feel this is a series best read in sequence. Volume 1 is freaking awesome but it also gives you a good basis for the characterss motives in Volume 2

I so very much enjoyed Book 1 and then got distracted by life and other books. But I am very glad to be back in the world of the Atomic Sea. Vol. 1 set the stage with the war and the messed up oceans and the tainted people. An unlikely group forms they arent quite all friends but they do all have some shared enemies. Now in this volume we will learn more about the motives behind the war, about what exactly created the Atomic Sea, and about how little chance they actually have of saving their beleaguered world.

Dr. Avery is still alive and kicking and he, the mysterious Layanna (who was pulled whole from the sea in Vol. 1), and their new odd friends (Muirblog, Janx, Simon, Hildra, and Byron) are just hanging out on a mountainside trying to plan their next move when they see a flying ray (possibly hunting them) in the distance. Yet before they can move out, the Mikvandi attack. Theyve got fish faces and weapons, so you know Avery will probably be having nightmares. Layanna in her weird Cthulu-amoeba-like form saves them only to have the Mikvandi declare her one of their gods (one of the Minuthra) and insist on escorting her to the other gods. Layanna is amenable to going with them because she believes the Minuthra will have an active altar, which is a kind of other dimensional portal. She wishes to contact her friends for very secret reasons which she reveals later in the book and which would be spoilery to chat about in detail here.

Things dont go as planned and the whole lot of them make an escape attempt. Only some of them get out on a dirigible but they have a direction to go and a quest that they adopt because if they dont then what hope do they have? Layanna needs another active altar and the crew need answers. Layanna can only give them some but they are kind of mind blowing. Its all kinds of wonderful messed up.

So if I tell you more of the plot, I will be in spoiler land, so I wont. In broad strokes, I just thoroughly enjoyed this book every bit as much as Vol. 1. If you eat tainted meat from the Atomic Sea, you start getting these weird fishy mutations and no one has pinned down a predictable trend (will it be gills and bulging eyes or shark skin and a spiny mohawk?) nor a real way to cure it. So we have these humans who have managed to stay all human, such as Dr. Avery, and then you have humans who had no choice but to eat tainted fish to survive and have these fishy attributes (like our big warrior Janx), and then you got Layanna who can have a human form or her other dimensional Cthulu-like form.

The performance was rough, rife with mispronounciatios of even common words. The writing sounded like a high school assignment. The plot was internally inconsistent. But some of the concepts were original and I listened to the end.

Daniel Movius, ex-senior liaitor, rides high in the opinion polls - until he loses everything, brushed aside by a very powerful man. Low-opped and abandoned, Movius finds himself fighting for survival in the city's underworld. There, the opinion of the masses is clear: It is time for a revolution against the corrupt superprivileged - and every revolution needs a leader.

Dystopian Revolution

I enjoyed this dystopian novel. Fans of dystopian novels, such as George Orwell's 1984, and ardent Frank Herbert fans will probably enjoy this novel. Those looking for a new Frank Herbert sci-fi novel, similar toDuneorThe Dosadi Experiment, might want to think twice before getting this book.

Setting is the near future where the world has become dominated by opinion polls and those who control the polls. In theory, those who rule are freely elected but in practice control has accumulated into the hand of a few families and their governmental bureaus. Frank Herbert goes onto explore how societies and governments have cycles and are destined to fail and how the actions of individuals and societies can be predicted scientifically. Daniel Movius has rose rapidly in the system which purportedly allows all to succeed but he falls even more rapidly as a result of political machinations. Daniel then goes on to join the separatist movement and turbocharge their languishing revolution. Overall, this is a good story which is filled with suspense, intrigue and action.

I would be interested to know when this novella was written in relation to some of Frank Herbert's other novels - unfortunately I could not find this information. My interest is due to the several themes which are similar to those in Dune, Whipping Star and the Dosadi Experiment and understanding how this novella may have influenced those if it was written first. High Opp also focuses on the fall of a society due to natural cycles similar to Dune. High Opp focuses on how governments and societies can fall similar to Dune, Whipping Star and The Dosadi Experiment. High Opp has a charismatic leader and explores the dangers and allures of such leaders - similar to aforementioned novels. High Opp also explores government and leadership similarly to referenced novel. One of the orgranizations in the novel operated similarly to BuSab (Bureau of Sabotage) in Whipping Star and The Dosadi Experiment. These theme similarities increased my enjoyment of this novel since they reminded me of some of my favorite Frank Herbert novels without ever feeling like I was reading a rewrite of those novels.

No significant editing issues were noted. High Opp is 3,012 Kindle locations long. Standard length "paperback" novels seem to run in the 4,500 to 7,000 plus Kindle location range.
