The overwhelming feeling of guilt and the silent pressure to support others. In this episode i share my personal experience of dealing with personal guilt that comes from having a savior complex mentality due to survivor's guilt. I put a lot of pressure on myself to rescue people I have left behind in certain seasons of my life. As someone who has deep levels of empathy, i find myself overly sensitized to other people's struggles. Part of the reason is because i have been there and i know how it feels so i am usually quick to break my own boundaries and carry weights & burdens that aren't mine to carry. Having a savior complex most times comes from surviving hardships and when it's mixed with having an empathetic temperament, it creates a pressure cooker situation inside where you're constantly carrying everyone's burden and feeling like it's your duty to save them. This is something a lot of immigrants like myself struggle with where they feel like they have to rescue and support their families and communities back home even at the expense of their emotional and mental well being. As a good person, you should support your family and community but there should be a limit to it. My earliest experience of dealing with this type of guilt was when i was a child and have experienced it in different phases of my life through out my adulthood. I still struggle with it from time to time but i'm learning to educate myself on how to overcome it and set up good boundaries.

I threw away a 7-year career in banking to pursue a PhD in engineering in the USA. In this episode I share my career transition/pivot from banking to engineering. I share my personal testimony of salvation. I grew up in a Christian household and was raised in the Anglican (protestant) denomination. However, in the course of my childhood, my parents moved us to several churches/denomination some of which were bible based while others preached heretical doctrines that wasn't founded on Christ or Salvation. In 1997, I had a personal encounter with God where I experienced a radical transformation and my life was completely changed. I went from being timid/shy to becoming bolder and living without fear or condemnation. Despite that encounter with Jesus, my Christian journey hasn't been easy or linear. In this episode Dr Nicole Avery shares how unseen forces affect mother-daughter relationships and overall family dynamics. Nicole believes that the way a mother parents has a lot to do with her family of origin, her position in the family and the spiritual forces influencing her thought life. She shares her personal story of surviving trauma, battling spiritual attacks, and finding her purpose in Christ despite early life hardships. She shares how her mother protected her as a child from witchcraft transference and as a result kept her from going to school when because she didn't trust external influences and just wanted to have her closely. By the time she turned 9, she and her 2 older sisters were taken into foster homes because her mom couldn't take care of them anymore however she believed that the mantle of being the spiritual overseer was passed on to her to break the generational pattern in her family. Her foster mom introduced her and her sisters to church and that help build her spiritual antenna in intercession for her family. Nicole believes in being prayerful and seeking prophetic counsel something she wishes she had encouraged her sister to do more before she passed away. She shares about the pain of losing her sister and reminisced on what a great person she was. She also talks sibling rivalry and the root cause of it and also talked about mothers who are jealous of their daughters and have deep animosity towards them.

Tammy shares her divorce from her husband of 25 years and how she's starting over in her 50s. Her husband was leading a secret life, grooming her daughters, addicted to prn and consuming and distributing CP. Even though she stood by him after he got convicted, however after seeing how that put a strain on her relationship with her daughter and grand son, she made the decision to file for divorce and end her 25 year long marriage. She shares what she's learning from this experience and why she believes she stayed in that relationship longer than she should have. She shares how she's starting over in life in her 50s, she's had to get a job to take care of herself and pay mortgage of their home which she got after the divorce. She is open to finding love and getting married again, but will pay more attention to her gut instincts when it comes to dating. One main lesson she learn is that she is good by herself, she doesn't need a man to be happy and content with her life. She also gives advice to women or men that have gone through similar situations.

Tammy shares how she found out her husband of 25 years was living a double life. He pretended to be the perfect Christian husband but behind closed doors, he was addicted to prn which ultimately led to his arrest for charges of consuming child prngry. Tammy shared how she met him after she had just separated and gotten a divorce from her 1st husband. She had 2 kids from the previous marriage and they ended up being a blended family as he also had kids from a previous marriage. On the surface everything looked good. There were no red flags, he wasn't abusive, he was a perfect husband, took care of her and the kids and went to church, however unknown to her, he battled his secret addition to prn for over 20 years. In 2006, Tammy's daughters made a complaint about his inappropriate interaction with them, he was basically grooming his step daughters and CPS got involved. Though no charges was filed, it put a strain on his relationship with her daughters as they were taken out of the house. Finally, in 2018, Tammy's whole marriage came crashing down when the FBI came knocking on their door to arrest him for consuming and distributing child prn. He got charged and was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in a federal prison.

Tammy takes us through her life's story about being deceived and manipulated by a man who claimed to love her but betrayed her and her daughters in the worst way possible. This is a very moving story and is a true lesson that you can never know people's true motives/character. This is the first part of Tammy's story and the concluding part will be up next week. I interviewed my sister who shared the brutal reality of her first nurse practitioner job (what no one tells you) & why she quit her first nurse practitioner jo after 6 months . She talked about her nursing school journey, how she started out as an LPN and quickly progressed to get her RN, BSN, Masters in Nursing leadership and finally a post graduate Masters degree in nurse practitioner. She shared how her first year working as a nurse practitioner was very challenging primarily because the very little training she got and very little support from her employer and more experienced colleagues. 6 months into the job, she basically got burnt out and decided to go part time and eventually quit that job to pursue another one. She is at a much better job now and even though the job is still very challenging, it is much better now because she has more support and is more experienced. Talking about pay/salary, she said family nurse practitioners aren't paid enough for the amount of work they out in, they earn about half of what regular physicians even though they are both paneled. Another challenge she faced was finding good preceptor during her training, fortunately she got some very good ones which was instrumental to her success. She finds her nurse practitioner profession very rewarding but wants to share her personal experiences and some challenges she's encountered with the hopes of helping others. 15 years later.... Living in America has changed me as an immigrant. In this episode i reflect on my immigrant journey in America. I have lived in the US for close to 15 years and looking back at how far i've come and all my experiences, I'd say it's been such a delightsome time. Being an African (Nigerian), i was hit with a lot of culture shock moments and experiences that questioned my values and beliefs when i first immigrated but over the years, i have become more open minded to accept new belief systems while maintaining my core value systems. I went from being extremely close minded to being more open minded, America taught me to be more humble, not to take myself too seriously (and be more self deprecating), it thought me to be patient, be more independent & helped me discover myself. I didn't realize i was black or a minority until in moved here and that has shown me parts of myself that i like and some parts i need to work on. As immigrants, whether we like it or not, we're constantly being changed and shaped by the culture and society of the country we live in and there's nothing bad about it. It is however important not to lose yourself completely but to allow a merging of both worlds/culture. In my 15 years in America, i have laughed, cried, being broke, being rich (still waiting for this to happen lol), failed, succeeded, being betrayed and being loved. It's been a whirlwind of a journey but a good one at that.

In this episode, i shared mistakes i made buying my first home in the US. Home buying can be quite a complex process and having all the information you need to make a good decision is very helpful. I share my personal experience and regrets about buying my first home in the US, from unexpected home costs like Insurance, HOA, PMI, etc , I dive into the lessons I've learned and what I would do differently if I had the chance. I shared why I chose to buy a town home instead of a single family home because as a single person, i didn't think i needed a very large space. However, unbeknownst to me, i didn't consider additional costs like HOA (home owners' association) dues and other townhome related expenses which is separate from my mortgage. I also talked about buying vs Renting. Sometimes it is Ok to rent instead of buying especially with the high interest rates. My top advise is not to buy a a townhome and if you did, buy one in a non-HOA community because those HOA dues pile up.
