First, Keith features something we haven't had in the podcast for quite some time. A feature from the world of old time radio. The series, Story Behind The Song featured a blend of beloved tunes from both the secular world, but also many favorite hymns. On July 9, 1931 (a hymn by Fannie Crosby was featured, "And I Shall See Him Face To Face." It's a tale that tells how a song that almost wasn't published, managed to spread the Gospel message to transform lives.
Main Topic
Greatness of god
How do personal views skew ideas about god? Can these be minimized?
* Gods attributes are his, not projected or invented by humans.
* He has all his attributes,. Not a broken set of them.
* He is unified, complex, multi-faceted.
* We don't know him fully, but only what he has revealed.
Attributes vs what god does. (What he is, not what he does.)
* Attributes are permanent
* Attributes are intrinsic (built in)
* Attributes can't be gained or lost.
Classifications.
* Communicable and incommunicable.
* Communicable - - in part god shares attributes with his creation.
* Incommunicable - attributes unique to god.
* Transitive and intransitive
* Transitive - operate outside god. ,Requires an object in creation to show them too. (God is near, in everything.)
* Intransitive - qualities that remain in gods nature. (God is distant.)
* Absolute and relative. Related to previous classification.
* Absolute - doesn't need a created thing to show themSelf to. Contained in god.
* Relative - manifested to creation. Whether inanimate or not.
* Natural and moral.
* Natural - non-moral superlatives of god. Such as knowledge and power.
* Moral - relates to right and wrong. Love, mercy, faithfulness, etc. .
Attributes of greatness
* Spirituality. Invisible, not material, no physical body. Not limited to laws of physics or to geography. Mentions to having hands, arms, etc are anthropomorphic.
* Spirits don't have bodies.
* Spirits can't have physical images (idolatry), can't be contained or controlled.
* Personality. An intelligent agent, not impersonal force. He has a name to identify him, and call him by.
* He has a name intended to embody character. He is active, knowing, and communicating with humans. In short, he seeks relationship.
* Should be respected as a being, not a wishing machine.
* He is the end, not a means to it. He is a value to us for what he is, not for what he does for us. What he does is proof of who he is.
* Life. Scripture doesn't argue for his existence, it affirms that he is, I Am. Life is the most basic aspect of his nature.
* Living and breathing god, controls nature. Jeremiah 10:10; John 5:26; 1 Thessalonians 1:9
* While all life is in him, he has no external source for his own life. Eternal, before time, he already was.
* He is not aloof, indifferent, or unconcerned. He relates because he wants to, not needs to. He doesn't need us to accomplish his purpose, we need him.
* He is the uncaused one, not self caused.
* Infinity. Unlimited and unlimitable. Physical realm is limited, with beginning and an end.
* Not limited by space.
* Not limited to a place, geography. Can be in countless places at the same time. We may have special places, due to experience, but god is not localized. He doesn't move from place to place, but handles things anywhere, at the same time.
