I am as always really excited to be here with you. With it being the season of thanks, I really want to thank you for joining me, it warms my heart. And I truly feel blessed to be hear and host this podcast, blog and youtube channel.   Anyway, today’s episode comes from Kelly from Seattle. Welcome Kelly and thank you for submitting your question. You ask a great question, “Can You Have Herpes If You Have Never Had An Outbreak?” In other words, you were saying that you have never had an outbreak so therefore you are in the clear. Ok, this is what I thought before I got herpes. But unfortunately, the lack of a visible outbreak does not mean you’re herpes free. In fact, many people who are herpes positive never experience an outbreak and according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 87.4% of infected individuals have no clue. YIKES!   Here’s what happens. We commonly and probably convince ourselves that whatever bump, cut or itch we have it is something else and there is no way it is dreaded herpes. I go on to tell a story about being in college and living in the sorority house, you will have to tune it to hear the entire story. But anyways, we decide that the cut is from shaving or the bump is from an ingrown hair or it is jock itch (whatever that is) and we then go on and about with our normal day.   What I don’t want to do is scare you. I just want you to be aware. I’m really glad Kelly asked this question. With these statistics and how we commonly misdiagnose our outbreaks I want you to make sure you ask your partner to get tested. Just because he or she says, “I have never had an outbreak” does not mean that he or she is herpes free. And here is the other thing, if you have a bump, itch, scratch or whatever make sure you get tested. Just don’t sweep it under the rug.   Keep in touch with Alexandra Harbushka

As always, I am thrilled to be here with you and thank you for joining us today. I love the #AskAlexandra episodes because it allows me to hear from you, connect with you and of course be a resource for you. Today’s question comes from Brian from Cincinnati. Thanks Brian for submitting your question. His question is, “does herpes move?” Ok so yes it does. In Order to answer this question, I break down the two herpes viruses. I also did a podcast on HSV 1 & HSV2 click here to read and listen for more details.   So back to can herpes move. Herpes can be passed from oral to genital and genital to oral. This happens through oral sex and vaginal or anal sex. For example, if person A has genital herpes he or she can pass it genitally to person B by having vaginal or anal sex. Or person B can become infected by person A if there is oral sex involved. Make sense?   Then as time continues your outbreak can travel. What this means is the virus lies dormant on the nervous system and when it wants to pop up and cause a blister it will pop up somewhere on the nerve. So for example, if your first outbreak was on your vaginal lips but years later it can move to your buttocks. The virus is going to stay around in the same area...in other words the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Ask, Answer and Get the Facts About Herpes     [video_player type="youtube" style="1" dimensions="560x315" width="560" height="315" align="center" margin_top="0" margin_bottom="20" ipad_color="black"]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS95bW9pejdLcHd0aw==[/video_player]       Life With Herpes   Welcome to today’s episode of Life With Herpes. I am recording this on Halloween so you will hear some trick o treaters, my fiance watching the world series and I am drinking a glass of wine while recording this. So it is a funny and different setting for me to record an episode. Today’s episode is a #AskAlexandra comes from Amanda in Queensbury NY. Her question is, “can I still have sex if I have herpes?” YES...YES….YES! The last thing that I want you to do is to become celibate and live a life punishing yourself or feeling like you are an outcast. Please don’t go down that path. If you are feeling that way then please reach out to me.  But with that said, because there is a little virus you need to take some precautions and have some conversations. Having these conversations is really positive.  It requires you to get familiar with your body and communicate with your partner. It requires you to say hey I feel like I have an outbreak coming on maybe we should get creative. The best ways to protect passing herpes to your partner is using a condom and taking the anti-viral. This is not 100% in preventing the virus from being passed but it will lessen your chances. Keep in touch with Alexandra Harbushka   www.lifewithherpes.com www.instagram.com/alexandraharbushka (ps. • I'm Back
Welcome to today’s sneak peek at being back on the grid. Yep, I’m back. I have to say, I never intended to be off the grid. As I talk about this in this quick episode, in my opinion, we are caught up in we can do it all all of the time and work/life/travel/and everything else can all be done at the same time. There is no balance. You never need to shut down because we have laptops, smartphones, and wifi. Ok, so yes, these are all awesome things. Don’t get me wrong. But, there are times when our life needs to be private, we need to enjoy every moment and be present in that moment with the people we are with.   In my case, I had the best month of my life. I got to marry my best friend, I got to be a bride, I got to have my dream wedding with the man of my dreams with the people I love at my favorite hotel in my favorite place on earth,  had my honeymoon at the same property, I fell more in love with my husband, I got to spend Thanksgiving doing holiday cooking and shopping and I turned 35! What a month.  But here is the secret to why I enjoyed it. I unplugged, I let it go, I didn't worry about what I should be doing or what I could be doing. I just enjoyed what I was doing right then and there and knew that that was where I was supposed to be.   So anyway my friend. This episode really had nothing to do with herpes. But what it had everything to do with was self-love and allowing yourself to feel, love and relax. So let me ask you...how are you going to unplug, live and enjoy? Here are some of the wedding photos

  • 062: How to Love Yourself Unconditionally, with Allana Pratt
Learning that your energy will reflect back to you [video_player type="youtube" style="1" dimensions="560x315" width="560" height="315" align="center" margin_top="0" margin_bottom="20" ipad_color="black"]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS9Bai13bldfZEhsUQ==[/video_player] Life With Herpes Podcast Welcome to episode 62 of Life With Herpes! We have an extra special guest joining us today, Ms. Allana Pratt. Allana is a renowned intimacy expert who helps men and women heal their wounded hearts, release shame and find intimacy within themselves and their romantic relationships.Join us as we talk about her own journey, the practices and tools she uses with her clients, and how to love yourself unconditionally. There’s all of that and more waiting for you on episode 62 of Life With Herpes. More About Life With Herpes   Today Allana Pratt knows what you believe about yourself is a vibration is a truth, and you will put it out there. it will be mirrored and matched back to you in who you attract. She learned this lesson when she was a topless dancer in Japan. In North American culture dancing going topless and being a topless dancer is shameful, but in Japan it wasn't a big deal. In fact, the men in the audience would bow and honor the women who were dancing. They would honor the women as goddesses before them, there was no shame in being a topless dancer. When she realized what she was feeling - shame and embarrassment - she changed her mindset. The next day while dancing she used an ancient breathing practice called Tonglen. She did this practice along with the affirmation of being a goddess and a work of art. Everyone in her section stood up, started bowing and she realized I am in charge! It fully changed her perspective and her life. Allana began applying this practice to other areas of her life, including her herpes diagnosis. She chose to see it as a gift rather than something that makes her dirty and shameful. Today this is part of what she teaches to others: how to transform challenges into gifts. She believes souls that take on being gay, being black, being a woman or having an STD - any type of soul that doesn't fit the mold - is a badass soul. Those are the souls who are here to grow and learn because it is difficult to deal with rejection, pain, etc. STDs, like herpes, are invitations to awaken and become enlightened, to speak our truth and to shine in the face of anything and open our hearts in the face of anything. But when we shut our hearts and judge ourselves it makes our journey a lot harder! I wanted to know if having herpes has allowed her to become more intimate with her partners? In a word, yes. By breaking down the word intimacy it becomes in to me I see.   Intimacy is the process of going inside of yourself and finding the shamed or hurting or angry little girl or boy in the back corner of your heart. When you find that little you then you heal that relationship with him or her. You love that part of you no matter what, you love that part of yourself unconditionally - even if he or she never changes. Allan also shared how she recommends getting through the initial stage when you are diagnosed with herpes. According to her you have to navigate your emotions, and ride them like the waves they are rather than suppress them. If you don't allow your feelings you will never fully heal. Avoidance doesn't heal your wounds, it just ensures they will show up again later in life in other ways and other situations. But if you are willing to navigate intense emotions and allow them you can heal. You don’t have to change anything, you don’t have to like anything about your situation, you only have to sit with it. Today we also talk about the stages of dealing with herpes outbreaks, solutions we've tried, and what we learned from the process. Today we get to call people out on their preconceived notions about herpes. I tell some of my personal stories about how people respond to me when I tell them about my Life With Herpes podcast and business. Here is a really key piece of information for you to remember when you are telling a partner that you have herpes, or it somehow comes up in conversation that you have herpes etc. This is what you need to tell them, “ According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 out of 6 adults have genital herpes. It comes in both forms of HSV1 and HSV2.”  Then I proceed to let them know that if they have more than 6 friends who are sexually active than 1 of them has genital herpes. I also proceed to let them know that if they have had sex with more than 6 people then based on statistics you have been exposed to someone who has genital herpes. The World Health Organization says that 67% of them in the world have HSV 1 and 11% have HSV 2.   Basically I go on to say that at some point in our life before we actually got herpes we were all exposed to herpes and if you are talking to someone who does not have herpes make sure you share these staggering statistics with them.     I got pretty passionate and fired up on this episode and really wanted to the point across. Anyway, let me know if you have additional questions on this topic.     Keep in touch with Alexandra Harbushka   www.lifewithherpes.com www.instagram.com/alexandraharbushka www.facebook.com/lifewithherpespodcast   www.pinterest.com/lifewithherpes Join the community   If you are ready to join a community of people who are living with herpes also then you will want to join our slack group. Ask, Answer and Get the Facts About Herpes [video_player type="youtube" style="1" dimensions="560x315" width="560" height="315" align="center" margin_top="0" margin_bottom="20" ipad_color="black"]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS9nVFlyMTRKVWFZaw==[/video_player]   Welcome to today’s episode of Life With Herpes as we answer questions from our community. This is one of my favorites to record because I get to hear from you and hear your questions. Today’s question comes from our anonymous friend in Santa Clara, California. Here is her question, “Can you be subsequently infected with genital HSV 1 after genital HSV 2 infection?” This is a great question and the short answer is...yes. However, this is not as common to have both HSV 1 and HSV 2 but let me break it down for you.     You can get both HSV 1 and HSV 2 in either region, meaning the virus does not really care where it goes as long as you give it a location to go. Typically HSV 1 is oral herpes and HSV 2 is known as genital herpes however because of our extracurricular activities such as oral sex the virus can get passed to either region. Now if you already have a version of HSV then typically your body is capable of fighting off the other infection because the viruses are so similar. However, if your immune system is down or the herpes stars align or you are just lucky like me then you can become infected with both HSV 1 and HSV 2. In other words, you can have really any combination of herpes such as both HSV 1 & 2 in your genital region or both HSV 1 & 2 on your mouth or really any combination you can come up with.   Thank you, my friend, from Santa Clara for asking this great question. • 059: How would you react to herpes with Alexandra Harbushka
Your perception of herpes in hindsight   [video_player type="youtube" style="1" dimensions="560x315" width="560" height="315" align="center" margin_top="0" margin_bottom="20" ipad_color="black"]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS9RQ2lPQS1sMk9XYw==[/video_player]   The Life With Herpes Podcast Welcome to today’s episode on Life With Herpes. As always, I am thrilled to be spending time with you whatever it is you are doing. On today’s episode topic it really made me think. The idea came to me through our Life With Herpes Slack Community and it was one of the conversations that our community was talking about. The conversation started something like this...Has anyone ever considered how you would’ve reacted to someone disclosing that they had herpes to you.... before you were diagnosed? Do you think you would’ve been open and generous about it? Or has being diagnosed changed how you think about STDs in general?I chimed in later on in the thread but as I was adding my response I really had to stop and ponder. Because the truth is I don’t know how I would react. I would love to say that I would react positively, that it would be no big deal but it probably would have been a really big deal.   As I went on to discuss this in today’s episode, I realized that a lot of criteria would have played a role. Things like my age and how into the guy that I would hypothetically be dating would have changed my perception of herpes and of course the stigma.  I continue to talk about a few different scenarios on the episode too. I also stopped to think about different times in my life how I have said I would never or that is wrong or these are the rules and how as I have grown and experienced life I have completely changed my view. I have done things I said I would never do, I have changed my perception of people or ideas that I originally would have turned my cheek too.  When you boil it all down your answer in hindsight is very different and the truth is you really don't know how you would have reacted to something until that something is presented to you.   I hope you will take a second to think about perception, beliefs, and your view on herpes and STDs and STI.s     Keep in touch with Alexandra Harbushka   www.lifewithherpes.com www.instagram.com/alexandraharbushka (ps. This is one of my favorites to record because I get to hear from you and hear your questions. Today’s question comes from our friend Mary from Boston. She asks a great question, “can you get herpes in your eye?” The short quick answer is, Yes. Yes you can get herpes in your eyes. The virus typically likes wet, moist and softer types of skin. So if you think about it, your lips and your genital region fit those specifications and so do you eyes. Remember, Mary, that the transmission is skin to skin so you can pass yourself herpes to your eye or any other region if you have an outbreak. On this episode, I recommend some ways to prevent passing the virus and how to wash your hands if you have come in contact with an open blister or sore.   I hope this answers your question, Mary. If you have herpes in your eye this definitely something you will want to get taken care of and see your healthcare provider.     Keep in touch with Alexandra Harbushka   www.lifewithherpes.com www.instagram.com/alexandraharbushka (ps. • 057: #AskAlexandra Should I get tested again for herpes in 6 months?
Ask, Answer and Get the Facts About Herpes [video_player type="youtube" style="1" dimensions="560x315" width="560" height="315" align="center" margin_top="0" margin_bottom="20" ipad_color="black"]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS9wTU96T2pRRElMZw==[/video_player]   Welcome to today’s episode of Life With Herpes as we answer questions from our community. This is one of my favorites to record because I get to hear from you and hear your questions. Today’s question comes from our anonymous friend from Sydney, Australia. Here is her story and question, “I had non-penetrative sexual contact with a hsv2+ person. I was tested at 2 and 3 months post contact and was negative for hsv 2 but positive for hsv 1. Do you think I should still worry and get tested again at 6 months? I have had no symptoms at all except like a few pimples which weren't painful and didn't look like herpes sores.”   As I proceed to answer this question from our Aussie I want to ensure that we all know that HSV 1 (oral herpes) and HSV 2 (genital herpes) can be passed back and forth from oral to genital. If you have been exposed to an HSV positive partner then yes, it is wise to get a herpes test. However, as I mentioned most likely this is not the first time you have been exposed to HSV and it won’t be the last. Since, our Aussie has tested a couple of times post her initial contact I believe that she is in the clear. However, I tell a personal story about a nightmare I had and how I went to get retested to ease my worry and concern. If the worry is going to eat you up then yes, get tested again.   I do offer some additional recommendations so I do hope you will tune in to the episode to hear more and of course hear my story about my nightmare.   Thank you, my Aussie friend, for asking this great question, I hope it helps and I hope you take a minute to breathe, take a goddess bath and know that you are fine.
