  • Going Crazy With Weapons: Unmounted Cavaliers & Holy Fishermen

This week we discuss a handful of character builds with a major thing in common; weaponry. We explore making a bugbear cavalier who forgoes riding a horse to hit enemies with a polearm from over 20 feet away. In addition, we find ways to challenge the status quo when deciding what weapons to pick during character creation.

  • Ten Commandments for DMs (and when to break them)

This week we pick up our copy of Xanathar's and begin to peruse. The first thing we hist are some important basic rules/principles (commandments?) for DMs to remember. We go through the list and share our experiences with them.

Starting with: there are exceptions to every rule!

  • Warping Our Minds: Building a Psionic Soul Sorcerer

Jay rebuilds an old psionic charcter with the new psionic rules: psionic soul sorcerer subclass. We review the new mechanics behind the ebb and flow of the psionic talent die. And we unpack Molochia, the Owl Sorcerer. She's a mad, abberant mind Tabaxi. And Jay is probably mad for wanting to play her.

Jack argues that there is a lot wrong with the new subclass. We argue about the value of the new Psionic Discovery for sorcerer spells. He wants to see more expanded spell list for Sorcerers. We weigh the value of psychic socerery vs. subtle casting. And we get into each other's head over telepathic connection. Overall it doesn't look good for Jay's build: will he still be able to make a cool cat that you'd want to steal?

  • School Tours: Where is Your Young Wizard Going To Enroll This Fall?

We talk about digital dice: get your crippling addiction digitized. Jay talks about the good ol' Gygaxian days of D&D 1st edition dice, while Jack throws up in his mouth just a little bit.

Then we do a deep dive into the eight schools of Magic: from Abjuration's protection, to Conjuring your familiar; from the portence of Diviners to the manipulating Enchanters (we talk about why these are the most evil wizards); from the new realities of Illusion to the overchannels of evocation; and from the oft-maligned necromancers to the criticaly roled transmuters. We look not just at the benefits of each, but the benefits of going deep in each.

The idea is simple: instead of making a "swiss army knife" wizard, with spells from all schools, make a more focused practitioner of a particular school. Wear your school colors with pride. And if you are a DM, we have a few ideas how you might want to incentivise this with a couple simple table rules, like making casting costs half-price within your own school of magic.

Then stick around to the end: we argue about why Lesser Restoration is better than Greater Restoration -- at least for disease.

    • The Wizard Class and Schools
    — Wild and enigmatic, varied in form and function, the power of magic draws students who seek to master its mysteries. Some aspire to become like the gods, shaping reality itself. Though the casting of a typical spell requires merely the utterance of a few strange words, fleeting gestures, and sometimes a pinch or clump of exotic materials, these surface components barely hint at the expertise attained after years of apprenticeship and countless hours of study.

  • Gem Dragon Bloodline: A Sapphire Sorcerer is Born

In this episode, we discuss the adventures we have embarked on within the safety of our own homes, providing insights into the tools we use to enhance our D&D experience. We talk about playing 1-on-1 Fight Nights, how we use these to playtest homebrew ideas, or even discover character builds that we never knew we were going to love so much.

That was the case with the Sapphire Sorcerer. He's a deep gnome sorcerer with a draconic bloodline. With a little research, we discovered Sapphire Dragons, a recent addition to 5e, had strong bonds with deep gnomes. Suddenly we had a character coming together. We talk about how Jack customized him further with spell selection, and how that worked out in his first fight versus a Death Kiss.

Also, we talk a bit about the battlemaps, and out use of Dungeon Craft tiles to bring them to life. But remember, you don't need any of this stuff to have fun with D&D!

  • New UA Subclasses: Souls for Beers, Teenage Bedrooms Inside Magic Lamps, and Tiny Cowboys Riding Your Wizard's Familiar

A new Unearthed Arcana has dropped with updates to the subclasses formerly known as The Revived Rogue, The Noble Genie Warlock adn The Achivist Artificer.

The Revived Rogue has become the Phantom, and we dig into all the new features and compare what was lost (like not needing to sleep or breathe) with what has been gained, a massive boost to sneak attack damage. Also, we look at gaining proficiency in the Tuba, and trading soul coins for a round of beers.

The Noble Genie is now just the Genie Warlock, and all that weird tether stuf is gone. In its place a nice clean subclass that lets you hide in your magic lamp. We dig into the new spells and features, and some fun ways to play this as a Pact of Chain warlock.

The Achivist Artificer is now the Order of Scribes wizard. Jack shares his frustration over naming conventions, and then we look at how to play this wizard in a cool way that you wouldn't be able to play other wizards.

  • Ready For Hell: The Heavy Metal Holy Ranger

In this episode, we go where no one wants to go: Ranger Land! Except that we make our Ranger into a psedo-paladin for a Descent into Avernus, or any fiendish/undead campaign setting. He's trading in his bow for melee weapons as a Strength Ranger -- a StRanger! We talk about how we like to build a stereotypical character out of a completely different class.

We also talk about how we distrust stats that people roll at home, why the point buy system works best, before we suit up the ranger in full plate and turn him into a holy knight who travels to fiendish planes to hold the line.

Then we get frustrated with favored terrain and favored enemies. We talk about a few simple table rules that won't break the game, while making these Ranger features suck less. Get ready to trade in your Divine Smite for a Zephyr Strike!

  • Exploring New Frontiers

In the age of social distancing, we talk about our first impressions (and frustrations) with playing D&D online. We discuss the blanace between theatre-of-the-mind versus online maps, or even extravegant real-life battlemaps. We talk about the joys of rolling real dice -- and how metal dice make that joy even greater.

And we go into another new world, let our critter love spill out, and discuss some exciting magic items from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount sourcebook. These items include a good reason to finally be packing some brewer's supplies, a shiny warhammer that vampires will hate, and steroids for magic users. Also, we put the new halflings on a pedestal.
