Rabeinu tells us that G-d constantly desires to draw down blessings and influx to the world, but the only way that He can do so is if we build ourselves a vessel. Rabeinu tells us how to build this vessel called “אני-Ani” through sincere prayer, that is, when a person binds his thoughts to the words of prayer.

Torah 72: Rabeinu explains that when a person has a thought of returning to G-d and immoderately follows that thought with a holy act, for example to go to the tzadik, the closer he gets to the tzadik the more he loses his initial desire. This is because he broke his initial yetzer hara and now has a completely new one. Rabeinu tells us that we need to break this new yetzer hara and overpower it with a new desire, to reinforce ourselves against this new evil inclination.

Rabeinu teaches us that the soul is constantly drawn to money because the same place where money is rooted is where the souls are drawn from. But Rabeinu tells us not to run after money in its corporeal state but only to honor money and the people who have it because of the holiness of this shefa before it devolves (just Like Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi).

Rabeinu then goes on to tell us how anger makes a person lose his wealth and he teaches us how bad this evil trait really is!

Rabeinu teaches us that the soul’s root is kavod/glory. Sometimes when a person receives new honor, it’s because glory is either coming to claim this person’s soul G-d forbid (it’s time for this soul to leave this person) or in most instances it’s to give this person a new soul (and this new soul is garbed in honor).

Rabeinu explains that we have to ensure that this kavod has a “face” which is only possible when we don’t fall into the desire of eating and our table is in a state of holiness. If we fall into this craving for food and eating in a non holy way, then this kavod/kingship is given to the brazen faced people of the generation and honor is blemished. Eating in holiness ensures that the kingship isn’t given to evil people…

Rabeinu goes on to delve into the subjects of: charity, the extraneous matters of the mind, hair, fear and love, cold water which heals the soul, giving honor to the elderly who forgot their Torah, praying with concentration, thunder, etc…

The Tzadikim posses 2 ruachs: one that exists in the world to come and one that exists in this world. When it’s time for the tzadik to pass away, the upper spirit comes to greet the lower one and they attach themselves with great unity, so that when the upper decided to go up (because it can’t endure this world) the lower spirit follows it. Rabeinu teaches us that the students of the tzadik receive from him and that the tzadik is their source of sustenance. When the tzadik’s upper spirit descends to take him, the students present at the time of the passing of this tzadik are actually able to take this upper ruach and it remains with them. Rabeinu explains that being attached to the tzadik/ being a true student means to feel the ascents and descents the tzadik undergoes.

Another main theme of the lesson is with regard to obstacles that one needs to break to achieve a holy act. And how to break the obstacles? Desire and longing.

Rabeinu also discusses bringing the potential into the actual, livelihood, the perfection of speech, truth/honesty, Teshuva, the downfall of the wicked, the letters and vowel points, the body and the soul, etc…
