Publisher's Summary:
Tom Jackson follows the call of a loon to find a small boy alone on an island in the middle of a northern Minnesota lake. They need to figure out who the kid is, why he was left on the island, but the real issue seems to be that a loon led him to the boy. Tom's father-in-law, a full-blood Native American mystic, hints that the loon might be the spirit of his dead wife.

Loon Child, Heart-warming Story of Family
Midwesterners will identify with the serenity of summers at the cabin on the lake with family, friends and neighbors. For many it's a place to fill your table daily with freshly caught fish or for outdoor activities like boating, water skiing, swimming or just dangling your feet in the lake while sitting on the dock.
For others the cabin on the lake is a place of quietude, reflection, of introspection and of communing with nature. The cabin on the lake can also be a spiritual place, especially in the early morning before sunrise when the fog rides across the surface of the lake or in the evening after sunset while you can still see the faint silhouette of a fisherman in a boat casting a line into the water. To hear one of the different calls of the loon at one of those times makes the experience very spiritual.
Loon Child begins in such a time and place at a lake cabin in Hayward, Wisconsin. The tremolo call of the loon in the evening opens the story; while a hoot call closes the tale. The loon calls are subtle metaphors, but I loved how they're used in the story. Too bad many readers unfamiliar with the common loon may miss that.
Loon Child for me is a story of la familia because the family is heart. You can no more deny family or heritage than the moon can deny the light of the sun. In a world often seen with too much me-ism, Loon Child gets the reader to see the many nurturing, endearing and healing powers that emanate from the human heart. It manifests itself in the form of love shared with your family, your friends and your extended family.
Family love envelops Samuel, whose biblical name means endearment and child rearing. He struggles with the loss of his only child Katherine and how to reconcile his relationship with his son-in-law Tom Jackson, who himself struggles to overcome the loss of Katherine, his wife, and his son Jim, who was killed in action while serving his country. Add a five-year-old boy abandoned on a lake island during the darkness of the night without proper clothing, food or shelter; then add the frantic search for his mother, who dies before she can explain things; now wait for the climax.
Loon Child is a heart-warming tale told by a new author, who in telling the story also shows us that it's okay for men to show their gentle side and nurturing hearts.
Who wouldn't love this story?
A story filled with sadness and then joy, filled with loneliness and then family, filled with loss and then gain. Set in familiar surroundings that I love it was easy to get pulled in to the tale and fly through to the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this!
