Julie Myerson is a great author!
Loved this book as I always do any book with lots of suspense. Couldn't wait to read it and wasn't disappointed.
Awful
Truly disappointing because there was absolutely no depth and there was no suspense and I think I only read it because I paid for it.
Not Very Thrilling
This is the first book I've read in the new line of thriller novellas from Hammer, and also the first book I've read by Julie Myerson. She's apparently a highly-regarded British author, but you'd never know it from this anemic thriller. I love the old Hammer films from the 1960s and '70s, but THE QUICKENING doesn't really follow that tradition.
A young honeymoon couple in Antigua--she's rich and pregnant, he's poor and acting suspicious. Some local natives warn her to get herself and her husband away from the island. Then she starts seeing a phantom, or zombie, or something--a young man covered in dirt (from a grave?) who tells her that her groom is responsible for his death. So far, so good, right? But then it just goes on--the groom keeps acting fishy, and everyone in their resort hotel thinks the bride is going crazy. (Try counting the number of times people ask the heroine if she's feeling okay.) It builds to a fairly shocking finale, if you have the patience to stick with it until then.
Myerson's fancy writing style (she doesn't use contractions or quotation marks) isn't really suitable for the thriller genre, and that may be the main problem here. I gave it 3 stars because she's clearly a good writer, and some of the descriptions are vivid, but I suspect her other, non-horror books are probably better than this. It's not the thrill ride I was expecting. Based on this, I'm not rushing to get more books in the Hammer horror line.
A creepy, tense read
I have never read another story by Julie Myerson and I wasn't sure what to expect with this story as the blurb on the back of the book wasn't very useful. All I knew was this was a thriller, maybe a ghost story...
Julie Myerson has an unusual, original prose style which suits the story. She builds tension well and I found myself constantly trying to figure out what was really happening with the events of the book...if the events should be taken at face value or if there was more to the story.
The Quickening is a creepy, tense read. It won't take you long to read its 274 pages. I do recommend it if you like spooky, creepy stories!
Five Stars
Loved it! Enthralling, so scary. I was so spooked. Badass read.
