Title: The Game

Author: Edward Owen

Narrator: Michael Hacker

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 23 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-20-13

Publisher: Edward Owen

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Fiction, Horror

Publisher's Summary:

Edward Teraneau finds himself in a room with eight of the top poker players in the world. As a three time WSOP winner with the highest lifetime earnings of any player, the setting is not all that unusual. However, the fact that there are no doors or windows in the room and none of the players can remember how they got there pushes the situation far past the 'unusual' mark.

As the players discuss the reasons behind their apparent imprisonment, a door opens and a man enters. He introduces himself as Darius, their host. He explains he has brought them together to play poker, including himself in the game. The players refuse, demanding to be released. However, when Darius reveals the stakes of the game, the players are forced to participate. Edward must use his considerable skills not only against the best players in the world, but against the enigmatic Darius.

In The Game, losing is not an option, but winning holds a horror all its own.

Riveting

I had to finish the book in one sitting.

Part edge-of-seat, part emotive, wholely engrossing.

I don't play Poker and have no idea of the rules, however that did not stop me understanding and enjoying this book.

The twist at the end was unexpected.

Survival is the Only Prize in this High Stakes Game!

A must read for horror and poker fans alike! The star of Edward Owen's The Game is a maniacal blue-eyed CEO who, in Richard Branson fashion, is not just pursuing the thrill of death defying stunts, but setting up an elaborate game of winner-take-all Texas Hold Em against Las Vegas' reigning poker pros. He wants to pit himself against the pros in order to gain the prestige of proving himself to be the best player.

To this goal, a technological wonder of a secret lair, 500 feet underground, has been created. In a grand entrance, equal to any James Bond criminal mastermind, our evil tycoon, Darius Wellington, appears "...the panel across from the table slid open and a man in a gray Armani suit entered the room."

The pros soon discover that they are not playing for money. It was not enough to drug and kidnap his unwilling competitors; Darius has provided them with life or death motivation. The poker tournament room is surrounded by nine glass cells that fill, or drain, with water, depending upon a player's stack of chips. Trapped in each cell is a poker pro's loved one--a spouse, a child, a parent, or a sibling.

Not only must they play against Darius and each other, but they must win, or their loved ones will drown in front of them. A dedicated security force follows Darius' every order. There is no escape or rescue, every player is wearing a bracelet that delivers a debilitating electric shock if they don't do as commanded--play the game!

No spoilers provided here--read this non-stop thriller to discover what happens, but know that you'll never look at a televised poker game or view the slow shuffle of a deck of cards, in quite the same way...

Calling All Poker Players!

If you're one of the millions of people who play Texas Hold 'em, this novella by Edward Owen is sure to grab and hold your attention. Edward, the world's best player, finds himself in a game with stakes higher than he ever imagined.

Good, Straightforward Horror Story

Solid if not a little predictable. This is my second Ninness story and I now feel qualified to say he's a decent horror writer. Narration was excellent. Look forward to more of Mr. Ninness's stories.

My Favorite Ninness Story So Far

Ninness has caught my attention as of late, and I have been "marathonning" through his collection. Of the four I have listened to up to this point, I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. If you like supernatural short stories, give this one a go. As a matter of fact, give any of his stories a listen. Not bad at all for the price.

A Creepy Quickie

A preview of "The Sound of Autumn Night" is attached to Van Winkle's "The Followers" short story. This story is much shorter, than "The Followers" but delivers a it's voodoo ickiness quickly and effectively. William Van Winkle is one to watch.

Title: Full Circle

Author: Chuck Alderman

Narrator: Andy Babinski

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 34 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-11-13

Publisher: Charles T. Alderman

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Fiction, Horror

Publisher's Summary:

This audiobook has a two pronged story line. On one hand, it features the rise of a mob hit man. The second connected story is about a fence, a low level outsider of the mob. It tells the two stories, alternating in the book as they relate, and the Gypsy hag who's control drives the way it goes. Her hold on our characters is subtle, yet devious.

Members Reviews:

Full Circle is a great Mob story

Full Circle is a great Mob story . It tells the story of Lou and Fence. Lou is a very successful hit man he bought a business so he can launder money. Fence is sort of a business advisor/ manager. A great mix of characters , you get hit men, mobsters and gypsy's. There is some sexual content so i would recommend for age 18 and over. A fabulous short story only 58 pgs so a very quick read for me. I look forward to reading more books by Chuck Alderman

Full Circle by Chuck Alderman

"Full Circle" is a short story that meets all the expectations I have when I read one. The author has used each word and scene to move the story forward without lingering too long on the back stories. We are given just the correct amount of information needed to understand the protagonist's motivation so we understand his behavior.

Along with the author's ability to tell a story in a short amount of space this is also a well written gangster story that draws the reader into its complex web. To further intrigue, there is just a bit of paranormal to keep us guessing.

I enjoyed this one and will recommend it to my friends.

Karen Bryant Doering

Parents' Little Black Book

Gritty Murder for Hire Story

Full Circle, by Chuck Alderman, is told from the point of view of two miscreants, Lou and Fence. The gritty lives of the two lawless men finally intersect, and they join forces. Lou is a successful hit man, but buys a business to launder money. After a colorful life of "procuring things," Fence is a sort of business manager/advisor.

Full Circle would be a great film. I see it as a neo-noir, crime-action-thriller movie, with Lou and Fence moving toward their destinies, including Lou's brush with voodoo.

Another Great Read!!!

Another great read! This book contains it all...suspense, action, and a little bit of the supernatural, all wrapped up by the talented Chuck Alderman. Thanks Chuck...looking forward to another book!

A good read!

I found the characters in this story fascinating. This is my first read from the gangster genre, and I really enjoyed it.

Publisher: Crossroad Press

Her name was Crimson...and she was a legend. A beautiful pirate queen who plundered the 16th Century Caribbean sea by day and confronted voodoo and vampires during the steaming tropical nights.

Cast in Dark Waters is an original dark adventure tale by Ed Gorman and Tom Piccirilli.

This will be a Crossroad Press production.

Members Reviews:

A Great Little Paranormal Pirate Adventure Story

This was a great little paranormal pirate story. The lead pirate was a lady named Crimson. Thats right a girl pirate and boy was she tuff! She was paid for a voyage to help a couple find and return their daughter, who they believe is being held against her will on a haunted island. Crimson believes her husband was also lost on or near the island so she is determined to find the island and recover them both.

The life of pirates always makes for a great adventure story and this story hits the mark. At first it was a bit confusing for me, but as the story got going and I got comfortable with the terminology, it really picked up speed. It was a little too short for me and the ending did leave a bit of mystery to continue on to the next story.

Even though this was number 11 in the series, I think they are all stand-alone books and I did feel like you could listen to this book without hearing the previous 10 books.

The Narration Review

This audiobook was narrated by Leah Frederick. She has a clear voice and did well for the different character voices and accents she used in this story.

** Note **

I received this audiobook free from the Audio Jukebox Solid Gold Reviewer Program and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I received no chocolate or any other compensation in exchange for my review.

Don't waste your money/credit, buy the novella!

What would have made Cast in Dark Waters better?

A different narrator. Ms. Frederick was horrible. She has a lovely voice but it's very mechanical sounding. Better suited to pre-recorded voicemail messages, or directions, NOT novels.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cast in Dark Waters?

Knowing early on that I was going to have to force myself to listen to it and hope that the narration improved. It didn't.

Would you be willing to try another one of Leah Fredericks performances?

NOOOOO!!!! Not unless she's giving directions via Google Maps. Never again!

What character would you cut from Cast in Dark Waters?

The narrator.

Any additional comments?

Where to begin...SO many mispronunciations that half the time I was trying to figure out the real word she was trying to say. The accents were horrible, the story, delivered in a monotone, was maddening.

There were so many mispronunciations (FOILage instead of foliage springs to mind - and I'm pretty sure that the missing woman's name was 'Daphne' not "DAFFNA" ) that it was just a bonus irritant in an otherwise tortuous listen.

Ms. Frederick has a very high, thin, reedy voice, which isn't remotely suited to bringing to life the heroine of this story. The main character is supposed to be a strong, female pirate. You didn't believe for one second that this woman could take care of herself much less be such a rare thing as a female pirate in charge of other male pirates.

Where Crimson was supposed to sound tough, she sounded laughable. The character's introduction via sword fight and what I assume was meant to be witty banter, is down right ridiculous.
