Publisher's Summary:
Wilhelmina Goes Wandering is based on the true story of a runaway cow in Connecticut. For five months, in 2011, the 800-pound Black Angus was the talk of the town as she was seen around Milford, Orange, and West Haven, hanging out and traveling with a herd of deer. Even the animal control experts thought "she" was a "he"...until, that is, they tried to capture "him". When she is eventually captured and relocated to another farm, an animal sanctuary in Oxford, Wilhelmina finds that her urge for adventures has been curbed by knowing she is finally accepted and loved by her new farmer friend Betty. Five- to nine-year-old listeners (grownups, too!) will fall in love with Wilhelmina and her animal and human friends, brought to colorful life in the book.

An inspiring Wilhelmina!
For more than 30 years, I have read my friend John-Manuel Andrioteâs work. He is a historian, investigative journalist, social commentator and political gadfly. But, childrenâs author? Inspired by news stories of a wayward cow that caught the public imagination in his native Connecticut, John has created a charming story that works on several levels.
Wilhelmina the cow, bored by the confines of her pasture, literally jumps the fence into a world of discovery. Shadowed by Phineas the Cat on almost every page, she finds herself among new friends in often strange surroundings. Of course, there are those who find Wilhelminaâs wandering unacceptable and work to bring her back to her âproperâ place. Yet, even back in the barnyard, Wilhelminaâs adventure has forever changed her view of herself and those around her.
Katie Rundeâs spirited illustrations bring the story into focus and invite the reader to enter into Wilhelminaâs world. They evoke beautifully the New England countryside with its constantly changing seasons and colors.
This is a book to be read to and with children. The younger ones will be captivated by the pictures and story, while older ones may find themselves identifying with a wandering cow who finds love and acceptance in the most unexpected places.
Home is where the heart is
A curious bovine finds the grass can be greener on the other side in John-Manuel Andrioteâs first foray into childrenâs books. And, like all good childrenâs stories, âWilhelmina Goes Wanderingâ entertains and inspires both children and adults.
Andriote, the wide-ranging journalist and author whose non-fiction works include an examination of the impact of HIV/AIDS on American homosexuals as well as a history of disco dancing, takes a New England news item and projects it onto the big screen of universality.
