Against this backdrop, Raines questions take him back to the childhood home he left in Texas, back to the battered remains of his youth.

    Sweet surprise
Im not sure if this is the same John Lawson who writes the Inspector Troy series (which I like), but I loved this SO NOT Inspector Troy 1950s-60s set detective yarn, with its central mystery weaving around Vietnam and counterculture movements and icons. Its not action packed or flawless but delivers story and character.
I havent written a review in years but found this so engaging and entertaining that want to shout to mystery and social history fiction fans: This is one of the overlooked good ones!

A Brutal, Meditative Crime Thriller Set in the Alaskan Frontier
I picked up Hold the Dark after learning one of my favorite directors, Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) was adapting the book for Netflix. Saulnier's films frequently center around ordinary people confronted with the consequences of brutal violence and bad decisions, so I was eager to pick this one up.
Wolves are killing children in Keelut, a remote Alaskan village on the edge of the untamed wilderness. A grieving mother requests the aid of Russell Core, a wolf expert, to investigate the killings and track down the pack responsible. However, when Russell unintentionally stumbles upon a dark secret involving one of the missing children, it sets off a violent chain of events that will result in a significant body count for a novel that only spans 200 pages.
Tonally, Hold the Dark is a blend between No Country for Old Men and The Revenant. In spite of the pulpy/genre-ish set-up, this novel definitely swings more toward noir/literary fiction. Author William Giraldi's prose is both stark and descriptive, with the Alaskan wilderness providing a unique and foreboding backdrop to a tale of vengeance and survival.
This is an incredibly violent and grim book, but I commend Giraldi for not glorifying violence - in this world, man is clearly just as (if not more) cruel and unforgiving than nature. Also of note is Giraldi's depiction of the men and women who live on the furthest edge of civilization. I've never been that far north, but it would certainly take a different type of person to choose to live in such a difficult and harsh environment.
It was also nice reading a book that didn't overstay it's welcome - Hold the Dark may be short (you can read it in a couple of days), but it packs a lot a punch. I think it's going to translate well into film (especially at Saulnier's direction). If you're a fan of Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, HBO's True Detective, or wilderness crime thrillers, you'll find a lot to like here.
Best Novel I've Read in a Long Time
This one's the real deal. Great writing, fresh images, jackhammer intensity, vivid characters, fabulous use of backwoods Alaska as the setting, and totally original. Couldn't get it out of my head for weeks afterward. Everybody in it needs and is seeking redemption, but only some succeed. The rest of them...well, therein lies the tale. Not only that, you'll learn a hell of a lot about Inuit culture and about wolves and read some of the best descriptions of winter ever penned. Bring on the National Book Award nominations. If Hold the Dark isn't deserving, nothing is.
    Brutally Good
a dark story of one of the last frontiers and natives of our country.

Now the man who rescued the girl, who was believed to be her killer, begs Novak to uncover what really happened. The only problem is in small-town Midwest, cold cases stay cold.

My first introduction to him came through some of my favorite authors and resulted in reading
"Last Words" is the second book I read by Mr. Koryta. My first introduction to him came through some of my favorite authors and resulted in reading, "Those Who Wish Me Dead." In the latter I found the book engaging until the ending which really didn't make sense. The end result of that book could have happened much earlier and there is really no explanation as to why. In "Last Words" I struggled to get through it. Very little action and at one point I thought it was going to be a ghost story. Something that was inexplicable to me was why there was not one reference to spelunking as the proper terminology of those who explore caves. I get it that perhaps today people call it "caving" and using that reference throughout the book wouldn't have bothered me if there had been some explanation.
Michael Koryta does it again with a great story about a missing person in southern Indiana
Are you looking for a thrilling read? Then you've found it! Michael Koryta does it again with a great story about a missing person in southern Indiana. The scenes are vivid, the action is thrilling and when the story leads into the caves, you can feel the closeness of the walls and the depth of the darkness.
Koryta has written another page-turner with real characters who - while flawed - are unique and interesting. Can't wait for the second book in the series!
A great "return" to the detective series
I've read all of his books and this is one of my favorites. I primarily enjoy mystery novels and liked his detective series. When he took a different course after that I continued to read though the genre was different than what I was used to. Now with Last Words starting a series with more of a detective theme I will certainly continue purchasing the books of Michael Koryta.
    Not what I had hoped
I love this author! His books are beautifully written and masterly told. Unfortunately this one didn't work for me. Not enough interest in the subject and I didn't sympathize with anyone. Bit boring in parts. Will of course read his next book! Still writing is worth three stars.
Koryta is an excellent writer who gets you into the story right away ...
The writing was so vivid that in the scenes describing the action in the caves I actually had to stop reading for a bit because it seemed so very real that I felt I was down in the caves too.

    Fantastic!!!!
What a great story of twists and turns! This one was easier to figure out than the first one, but still a great ride!!!! I loved the way the story unfolded and how the characters just drew me in for the ride! Dan is a wonderful character! Any girl would be blessed to have a man like him!
And it was all 100% clean! What a refreshing change from most of what is out there today! Keep writing clean stories and I will keep buying them! Perfect book for all ages and engaging enough for adults as well!!! Totally recommend this author and anyone reading this must buy this entire series!!!! So worth it!!!!
A thin line between joy and fear
Great sequel, I was stuck after finishing this book. I could not write this review until I read the final book. Now I am at a lost for words. Imagine fear trying to pry loose the live you have for those you trust the most. Again I loved this story, I mean everything about it, from the beginning until the end. I'm convinced that Paul Pilkington has a magic pen. No matter which order you read these books you are going to want more.
Too many people in short span of time
I guess I'm just too old for this book.im getting confused with all the names. Have to give up!!!!!!!I tried...
A Good Second Book of a Thrilling Trilogy
This book was very good. I really loved the first book. The One You Love..This book continues as Emma ,Dan,Lizzy , and Will try to put their lives back together. I only gave four stars because, although the book was well written, the idea of another stalker ,after concluding the first case only days before left me a little weary. I also felt the police did very little, when in fact Emma and Dan's story was still big news. This story , like the first is full of suspense, and twists and turns. I was happy with the ending, and read the book straight through. I really enjoyed it, and have purchased the last book of the series.
    Five Stars
This is an awesome thriller book! Highly recommend to anybody that likes mystery and adventure!

    Title: Cold Caller
    Author: Jason Starr
    Narrator: Christopher Ragland
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 7 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-25-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Once a rising VP at a topflight ad agency, Bill Moss now works as a cold caller at a telemarketing firm in the Times Square area. He's got a bad case of the urban blues, and when a pink slip rather than a promotion comes through, Bill snaps....
Now he's got a dead supervisor on his hands and problems no career counselor can help him with.
Jason Starr, author of Cold Caller, Nothing Personal, Fake I.D., Hard Feelings and Tough Luck, was born in Brooklyn in 1966 and still lives in New York City. After completing a degree in economics at Binghampton University, Starr has concentrated on his classic noir crime fiction, which has been compared to the work of James Cain and Jim Thompson.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jason Starrs got a hip style and an ear for crackling dialogue...characters so real we feel we know them." (Jeffery Deaver)
Starr once again shows a real gift for satiric humor and capturing the contemporary New York scene." (Publishers Weekly on The Pack)
    Members Reviews:
    Behind the smile
What other book might you compare Cold Caller to, and why?
A sentence of life by Julian Gloag. Although very different in approach, both reveal the shifting viewpoints and gradual internal disintegration of the main protagonist
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The ending, as it was unexpected
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
I bought this book on a whim with no expectations and am so glad that I did. Told from the perspective of the failed and disheartened advertising executive, the story firmly established the main characters before sliding into extremes, carrying the reader/listener along with events plausibly. The text was well written and the dialogue plausible, unstilted.
The narrator, Christopher Ragland, was perfect both capturing the voice of the main protagonist exactly as I would have imagined it, and clearly differentiating those of others in dialogue.
I recommend it if character, rather than constant action, is a main voice criterion.
Not sure what to make of this...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
It held my attention so I guess I would. The maid character is a bit of a Jerk to coin the American phrase but for all that he was a prat I found that I wanted to see what he would do next.
Has Cold Caller put you off other books in this genre?
    No.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
    The Narration was solid enough.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
    Possibly.
    Any additional comments?
It was kind of a diet version of American Psycho. Warning there is some clunky dialogue that had me cringing at times. I did enjoy it but I am still not 100% sure why. Well it was a special offer so not like I lost much for 1.99
    a very weak, boring story
Would you try another book written by Jason Starr or narrated by Christopher Ragland?
    Absolutely not
If youve listened to books by Jason Starr before, how does this one compare?
    This was my first time
Did Christopher Ragland do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
He did better at narrating the other characters
If this book were a film would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I should have sent it back But gritted my teeth and finished it
    Great story
Worth the purchase. Nice little twist in the story. The last words in the story are spooky
    Lacks credibility
    Any additional comments?
Pitiful story line trying to do too much with too little and underdeveloped characters.
