Absorbing, convincing thriller with great characters

One of the best crime mysteries I have read/listened to. Two unusual narrators and a cast of complex characters who seem really real. I loved the setting in the ozarks. The book is so much better than the title suggests- I think the title sounds a bit "run of the mill thriller". Also great performances. I feel sad that I don't get to hear more about what happens next to the characters!

Policework in 1975

First Sentence: For the past several blocks, sensing that the silence suited our mood, we'd made no effort to make conversation.

Lt. Frank Hastings has problems. His newest case is the murder of a wealthy 70-year-old woman. Found bludgeoned in the garage of her San Francisco, Sea Cliff district home, it appears greed is the motive. But who is the killer? In his personal life, Hasting's girlfriend, Ann Haywood, begins feeling watched. Events escalate and Hastings knows the identity of the stalker, but has been ordered to stay away as it relates to a pending case.

It is very interesting to look at 1975 as it was written in 1975. Some men still wore hats, people smoked, there were no cell phones but there were police call boxes. There was still blatant sexism and racism, though less so in previous decades. And police procedures have changed significantly.

One of the most interesting this is to see what was considered rich back then. Frank is amazed at someone paying $1,000 a month in rent, which is much less than I pay now. However, I lived in San Francisco in 1975, paid $300 in rent and could only afford that with a roommate.

The plot is a basic police procedural. For the murder, it is classic investigative techniques of questioning the witnesses and following the evidence. With the stalker, it is much more confrontational with an element of violence and the ending was very exciting.

There are 18 books in the Frank Hastings series, ending with Wilcox death in 1996, and I'm having a wonderful time reading through them in order. Just an interesting point, he also wrote the books upon which the television series "McCloud" was based.

Fiction - but not that far fetched

This is a great book by Larry Jarboe - a known and respected grass roots alternative energy researcher and contributor. Larry has invested heavily in these technologies in both time, volunteering, and money - trying just about every conceivable contraption put out there by the thousands of open source engineers working to find a better way. The devices described within the pages of this tale are technically quite accurate and based in some part on actual systems designed by open sourced engineers. This book not only touches on some real sensitive political issues surrounding the suppression of free energy technologies, but it cuts close to the vein of just how close we are to upsetting the very carefully situated apple cart. It's fictional, but just barely. Within these pages one can find some glaring and ugly truths. I speak from first hand experience. Big oil - watch out.....

Fishy Deals: Beneath the Surface

Got all of Larry Jarboes' books off Amazon Kindle and they were a pleasure to read his stories on politics and alternative energy back on the east coast. Highly recommend readings.

Captivating mystery story!

The author's style was fresh and exciting throughout the novel. He integrated his thorough knowledge of the region, its people and its policies without overpowering the reader in details. It was like tasting a perfectly prepared Chesapeake crab cake with just a touch of Old Bay seasoning. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Great Book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite entertaining. It had everything from local to international politics. It shows how both locally and worldwide everything and everyone is controlled by Money. Being a native to

ST. Mary's County, MD, it was nice reading a book set in this area. It could have taken place in any small town in the world, because Money, Greed and Politics rule everywhere, but sometimes the underdog comes out on top.

Faction - Part Fact, Part Fiction

Its tough to classify this novel... Is it Fact? Is it Fiction? Truth be told it is somewhere in between. Not only does this book go into detail about local politics, history and society, but delves into the world of the same in international contexts. Plus the whole conspiracy/thriller/adventure part.

A fascinating read, a fun story, and solid storytelling make this book a worthwhile read. Try to see if you can pull apart the fact from the fiction!

5 stars for the content - Simon Kernick is an excellent writer. But I want to take issue with Amazon, how come there are more German versions of books than English, including some titles only available in German? All this licensing crap with ebooks can KMA! I want to buy an ebook from the UK site? I can't. Why? Because the SOBs have licensed areas all locked up. Take your licensing BS and stick it where the sun don't shine!
