Atkins blows up Quinn Colson's life in hardscrabble north Mississippi
One of Ace Atkinsâ Quinn Colson books is a strange place to discuss the concept of the âcozyâ, epitomized by Agatha Christieâs mysteries set in small English villages. Colsonâs Jericho, Mississippi isnât as quaint and everything-just-so as an English village, in fact in some ways itâs the opposite. Itâs desperately poor, thereâs no sense of a benign upper class leading the way and looking out for others, the powers-that-be are mostly corrupt, and a lot of its people are never more than a paycheck away from desperation.
But thereâs a social fabric. Quinn Colsonâs blue-collar family and friends hold each other up. Thereâs a sense of continuity and togetherness in their lives, and part of the enjoyment of these novels is Atkins carefully putting the pieces in place for this over the first four books of the series, following Colsonâs return from service as a Ranger in Afghanistan. The family is reunited. Colson finds love. He settles into the century-old family farm.
In this book, Atkins blows it all up, right at the beginning.
In the intervening year since the last episode, we learn, Colson has been ousted at the polls as sheriff by a candidate backed by Colsonâs nemesis, corrupt county supervisor and local strongman Johnny Stagg. Colsonâs sister Caddy, who had left the street life to settle down and raise her biracial son, has fallen apart again after the killing of her preacher boyfriend. Colson has to bloody an axe handle rescuing her from the slums of Memphis, and itâs all the family can do to talk her into going to rehab.
And Colson, who had been following a gradual and promising road to romance with local businesswoman Ophelia Bundren, has ditched her to resume a long-smoldering passion for childhood sweetheart Anna Lee Stevens. Who is married to Colsonâs childhood friend Luke Stevens, now the townâs doctor. Who has found out about it and left her and their daughter. Word of which has gotten around and created a classic small-town scandal. And none of Colsonâs people are real happy with her; they fear sheâll wreck Colsonâs life.
So, thereâs no comfort zone here. Itâs cold and New Year is coming up, with Colson to be ejected unceremoniously from office at 12:01 am, the earliest legal minute. What shall he do with his life? Farm with his father Jason, who has returned to town and their lives? Return to the Rangers and Afghanistan, maybe become an instructor? His friends advise him to leave town. There's nothing good in Jericho. But that would mean leaving Anna . . .
Meanwhile local lowlifes plot to rip off the dirty money stash of one of Staggâs crooked business buddies. Their comic redneck foulness as they try to crack a safe is reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen. After each scene with them you want to take a shower.

David Dunbarton needed a change. Following the unexpected success of his first novel and subsequent destruction of his marriage, David wanted somewhere nice and quiet to settle down. He wanted to surround himself with art, not people, and just maybe get to work on his next book.
But nothing is quite what it seems on Unaka Mountain. The abandoned hotels and homes of Ravencroft Springs decay in silent dignity. However, when Dunbarton relocates in hopes of breathing life into the town and himself, the mystery draws him in, leading him down mist laden streets where he finds arcane mysteries and bizarre townsfolk...leading him ever closer to the Secret of Unaka.
Pro Se Productions presents Ravencroft Springs by Logan L. Masterson. A lovecraftian tale of suspense set in the ancient Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, Ravencroft Springs is also a tale of desperate love and unrequited fate, both monstrous and moving all at once.
    Members Reviews:
    "The Way"
Ravencroft Springs (2014) is Logan L. Mastersonâs first book-length work. The mining town of Ravencroft Springs in East Tennessee has seen better days and is close to being a ghost town. Having âonce held thirty thousand inhabitants before the great depressionâ It now stood all but emptyâ Housing enough to serve maybe fifteen hundred people stood vacant. In the town below and the mountainside above lived maybe two-hundred souls.â It is to Ravencroft Springs that disillusioned writer David Dunbarton retreats from his wife, daughter, and the world as a whole to open an art gallery and focus on writing his second book.
Ravencroft Springs provides Dunbarton with more than an escape. He meets numerous, rather atypical residents of what remains of the town, most importantly Cassie, the owner of the townâs only diner. There is an almost immediate attraction between them. He also runs afoul of two town âtoughs,â Kaleb and Wilton. As time passes, David also is presented by the mystery of Ravencroft Springs. Nearly everywhere there is mold, fungus, and moss that permeates every surface. Somewhere in every building he enters he discovers glass jars of pickled substances resembling some sort of body parts, often identifiable as human. He learns that there is a history of people disappearing in Ravencroft Springs and that people living there have reportedly seen âthings in the night. There were reports of ghosts, of banshees, of hellhounds or werewolves. People were accused of witchcraft.â Urged to leave, David stays sensing not only that there is material for his new book in Ravencroft Springs, but something unknown waiting to be revealed.
In this early work Masterson proves he already possesses the critical attribute of writing suspenseful fiction. His writing is unembellished and precise and yet there is detail enough and a beautiful flow to his storytelling that immediately pulls the reader into the story. His characters have the power of either attraction or repulsion. Sometimes both.

    Publisher's Summary:

    REALLY A GREAT SERIES!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Both Ends Burning to be better than the print version?
    Audio is always better!
What other book might you compare Both Ends Burning to and why?
    its a mystery/thriller...and its great!
What does William Coon bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I really enjoyed Williams performance in all 3 books..He brought Candle to life for me!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was and I pretty much did!
    Any additional comments?
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
I LOVED THIS SERIES!! This one picked up once again where 2 left off..Candle gets his wife to safety and goes on the hunt to solve this mystery...there is a lot of blood shed, and tears..and he ultimately uncovers a larger conspiracy going on..and this one even left room for another one!
REALLY GREAT NARRATION AND STORY! I RECOMMEND!!!
    Amazing end to the series.
I'm sad to see this end, but at least it ended with a bang!
Candle is back in the thick of things again but in this one, he finally gets some answers and some closure. Poor Candle, his life is one long battle with Intellicraft for the last few months. But thankfully he finally gets some answers, which are quite surprising!! All he wants is for his wife and unborn child too be safe but will he get that??
This book, and indeed, this series, was one heck of a rollercoaster ride. Each book has been action packed, but this one more so. We also finally get some answers and some things are wrapped up. Though there is a potential for another book in the series, the author says at the end of the book that Candle's story is finished, but there will be a prequel about Intellicraft. I can not wait to read that one!! I'll miss Candle but I do think his story is over.
In all, this series was amazing. All 3 books were a 5 star read for me and I'm so glad I found these. Candle was an amazing character and I'm excited to see what else the author can create. His writing has captivated me!!!
William Coon once again did an amazing job. He always captured the tenseness perfectly and made Candle his own. I will definitely be checking out more by him.
*I received a copy of this for review.

    Members Reviews:
    fast-paced sci-fi adventure
Android Winter (Android X Book 3) is the continuation of Michael LaRonns series of humans vs androids. Xandifer X: Crenshaw and Shortcut are set to rescue the day but not before encountering battles with other deadly android hunters in a barren desert area known as the Badlands. Throughout the series their assignment has been to track down rogue androids and destroy them. Now they are charged with keeping a deadly secret from the bad guys who want to rule the world after destroying it.
X, Shortcut and others are desperately trying to keep the secret armies of frozen androids from being released and used for nefarious reasons. From the beginning it has been believed that the future belongs to Humans and Androids. This is one future that may just not be as positive as one believes.
Each book is split into four hour lengths which make it appealing and easier to follow; one does not become lost.
LaRonn does an excellent job of character development and plot development. He vividly describes battles and the struggle of X very well. Each character is important to the overall story there are no useless distracting ones.
All three books have flowed smoothly with no transition issues.
Erik Johnson does an excellent job for all the characters. His narration of the backstory tends to be a tad bit monotonous and a few action sequences which do not come across as exciting as they could but overall he did a great job.

    Clean Good Sci Fi
This was great. Great story. Great performance. Wow, no sex, no profanity, no lectures on political correctness. What a refreshing change.
The Android Winter Is Upon Us
In Android Winter, X and Shortcut enter the badlands to figure out who is behind the recent attacks.
Narration in Android Winter was done by Erik Johnson who did all three Android X books. His narration was the story. He became the characters and that really made this series a breeze to listen to for me. I like it when I can tell that someone really worked hard to make the characters shine, and I think that Johnson does that here.
This was an interesting one for me. I loved all three stories, but I liked them a little less each time. I think because I felt like I had to wait for what to me felt like a full story that was split into three parts. Granted the 4 hour audiobook times were great, I flew through them without looking back. But I think that if this was released as a full story it would have gotten a 4.5 maybe even a 5 out of me.
With that being said, the conclusion to this story was really enjoyable. Action packed, and full of surprised. Michael La Ronn didnt hold back as he wrote the finale of this series and even pulled the wool over my eyes a full times.
