    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Every company wants to grow and become more successful. There is no magic formula to make this happen, but it is generally agreed that in order for this to happen the company cannot stand still. Instead, they always have to be trying new things and growing.
    What You'll Hear:
In the IT department, in order to make this kind of growth occur, innovation has to be encouraged to happen. All too often the workers in the IT department can get too involved in their day-to-day tasks to spend any time thinking about innovation. That's where the CIO has to step in.
As the CIO, it is your job to create an IT environment in your department that will not only encourage innovation to happen but will also help it to grow once it starts. A great deal of this has to do with how you communicate to the rest of the department what you want to happen.
Innovation is something that we all know that we want to have happen, but just exactly how to make it occur is what often eludes us. As CIO you are going to have to identify the innovation strategies that will work with your company and your department and then implement them.
It's possible that either innovation projects have been tried in the past and have not worked or, more likely, there is no innovation going on right now. It is your job to change this and make innovation take root and become part of everyone's daily routine.
This book is filled with tools that CIOs can use to introduce innovation into their IT departments. These ideas range from using creative abrasion to employing faux market secrets. No matter what approach you decide to take, the goal is the same: cause innovation to take root and grow.
Making innovation happen is not easy. By listening to this book you will have the ideas and the techniques that you need to cause it to happen in your IT department. Once this happens, it can spread to the rest of the company. This is the kind of leadership that the company is looking for from their IT department.

Title: Two Birds in a Tree
Subtitle: Timeless Indian Wisdom for Business Leaders
    Author: Ram Nidumolu
    Narrator: Jim Manchester
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-07-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Looking back to the ancient knowledge of the Indian scripture, the Upanishads, Ram Nidumolu finds the core philosophy of sustainable leadership that's needed today. In this remarkable book, he uses a powerful parable from these scriptures to create a business vision that our world desperately needs.
"There are two birds, two sweet friends, who dwell in theselfsame tree," says the Upanishads. The first bird, dwelling on the lower part of the tree, lives "in sorrow and anxiety." Unable to see beyond the branches, it hops around compulsively indulging its appetites, eating every fruit, sweet and sour.
The other bird, higher up, can see the whole tree and the wider world - this perspective puts it in touch with its innate sense of being, the quality of existence that it shares in common with all other living beings and the natural world. Content, it "looks on in compassionate silence" at the other bird.
Ram Nidumolu's provocative book on business leadership uses this allegory from Indian scripture to highlight why many businesses are distrusted by the public and contribute to social ills like environmental destruction, wealth inequality, and climate change: they mimic the bird on the lower branch. But can business, compassion, and stewardship really coexist? Ram's surprising insight is to hearken back to the earliest Indian philosophical texts to reclaim their lessons for acting in accordance with our connection to Being.
He outlines a four-part framework for what he calls "being-centered leadership" and offers examples of this kind of leadership in action, from companies such as Harley Davidson, Timberland, Puma, Pepsi, and many others. It is time, he writes, to "look up from our rickety perch on the lower branch of a storm-tossed tree and begin the journey to the higher branch."

    Growth Starts Here...
I had the pleasure of working for Joe Mechlinski for several years prior to leading my own Sales and Marketing Team. For those who don't get the good fortune of working side by side with Joe, this book is the second best thing. Grow Regardless provides the strategy you need to help grow your business. By not accepting the "noise" that is economic, government, or industry factors as potential road blocks preventing success, Joe shows how you can break down your company and help build each facet of your organization to drive growth. This book will help open your eyes to how much every member of an organization "touches" the success of the business and how you as a leader can facilitate this process. I strongly recommend this book for people building teams and for anyone looking to step back and rethink how to grow their organization regardless of other factors.
Great tips and practical advice; a must read for entrepreneurs and small business owners!
I've found Grow Regardless to be a great read! Joe Mechlinski offers a straight-forward approach that draws on his wide breadth of experience to nail the essentials and stress the finer points of business growth, despite of the economic environment surrounding it.
The author's thoughts include the style of work-place culture small business owners must strive foster in order to grow; this is something which I personally I believe is an essential building block for business success. His knowledge of those successful values and traits make him a resource, a mentor, and a helpful guide for any business that thinks similarly.
To sum it all up, Joe is to be commended for writing this book as a "small business cartographer", laying out a clear and detailed map for growth that feels both intuitive and instinctive.
I've personally aided a diverse group of small businesses with start-up and growth in a variety of fields and, and this book is now on the highly recommended list for all of my clients!
Wow - ran the highlighter out!
I've known Joe for many years and have been a passionate believer in his message and style of doing business as well as having the privileged of calling him a friend.
Responsible for growing a mid-sized IT Solutions company in the DC Metro area, I'm always looking for ways to get ahead... so when Joe took his many years of passion towards growth and put it into a book, I wanted to get my hands on it.
When I read a management book, I carry a highlighter.

    Inspiring
Thank you! This was a great book to refocus me and my staff on what is most important. I loved it and have been implementing many ideas from this book into my business.
    Wheres the beef?
This is the length of a magazine article, not a book. Good story, good theme, good idea but it should be sold for $1.99 because its basically the size of a magazine article. To market this as a book is a misrepresentation.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
A fresh and timely approach to nurturing wise, resilient, and flexible leadership in a world of growing complexity
Leaders tend to obstinately stick to the leadership style that brought them most success in the past, usually one of two extreme styles: functional leadership that focuses on operational excellence or smart leadership that focuses on growth. When a leader's focus is too functional, the organization becomes introverted and can focus too much on bottom-line profitability while missing out on top-line growth opportunities. But when leaders focus too much on smart leadership, the organization may experience quick growth but lose its effectiveness quickly.
From Smart to Wise offers a new approach that balances the two styles to achieve a form of wise leadership that is both functional and smart. Drawing on inspiring real-life stories of historical and contemporary wise leaders such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and even Mahatma Gandhi, the authors identify six characteristics of wise leaders and offer a practical framework to help listeners develop their own style of wise leadership.
    Members Reviews:
Over simplistic aproach, not a single new idea
It is like the authors got every other business theory and put it in a blender. The Business Leader vs. Functional Leader aproach the book takes it is over simplistic and even the leaders they mentioned in ther tales do not fall in one case or another. Don't waste your time like I did.

    It is more statistics
It does give one inspiration but is more based on numbers... I was looking for a more "motivating" book i guess
This Blew My Mind ( and my patience).
What did you like best about The Athena Doctrine? What did you like least?
The best: A detailed portrayal of the latest global trends that may give us a chance to see a brighter future. Less than best: Unfortunately, the detail given was overly granular. Overall, this was a tedious listen, like trying to survey a landscape scene with a 400 power microscope.
    A fast-forward listen helped.
Would you ever listen to anything by John Gerzema and Michael D'Antonio again?
    Not at this time.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narration was without flaw. There is no finer speaker in the world. Oddly though, I felt as if the pace and alliteration were dialed in for an audience using English as a second language. This may very well be the case. I remember the old Voice of America short wave broadcasts: slow, clear enunciation, perfect but very very slow. I listened to the book on double speed mode and found it tolerable.
Was The Athena Doctrine worth the listening time?
    Negative.
