I'll keep Katie Flynn on my radar for future!
Katie Flynn keeps you hanging on until the last pages of this book, waiting for a bit of justice or desire to come to fruition.
I enjoyed Anne Dover's narration and learned many new, actually old, colloquialisms.
It's a book which emphasizes family ties and explores more than a few individual faults and misconceptions.
I enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the story lines.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alice has a scrupulously organised, comfortable life in West London with Noel - her second husband, whose main ambition in life is to sharpen his golf handicap in time for retirement. But Alices once-famous bohemian mother, Jocelyn, residing in shabby splendour in a crumbling house on a clifftop in Cornwall, becomes ill and Alice, with her daughter and stepson, goes to look after her.
What she finds there appals her - her glorious childhood home falling into decay, her brother and his wife taking more notice of the illegal substances being grown in the vegetable garden than in the domestic arrangements, and their twin sons running wild and living according to the tenets of the SAS Survival Handbook (trapping rabbits and catapulting seagulls).
Noel, helpfully, considers that Jocelyn offload the house (Shes sitting on a goldmine, you know) and move into sensible sheltered accommodation. But the children love the freedom and beauty that they discover in Cornwall, and Alice begins to wonder whether her chosen way of life is necessarily the right one.

    One's nightmare comes true
Alice, brought up by hippy-chick mother Joscelyn in a commune in Cornwall, has reacted against her upbringing by becoming the kind of person who writes lists, labels her bedlinen by size and lives in up-market Richmond with her second high-achieving husband and their his-and-hers family. Then she hears that her mother is not well and her brother and his wife, who resent having to cope with her and her lifestyle, need help. When she arrives in Cornwall every bone in her well-regulated body revolts at what she finds there but whilst she tries to correct the worst problems she finds that she is questioning her marriage and the relationships she has with the family. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its reading.

    Ready for the next installment
This is not rocket science, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable story. Things start a little slowly as we flash back and forth between recent past and present at least while the present is new agent training. The mix of past and present is good, not too much time in either timeframe. The flavor is a little Get Smart meets Man From UNCLE. I had a wonderful time figuring out who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. The setup is great for a recurring series and I can't wait for the next book.
Not even worth the money, much less the time
A lame cross between Nancy Drew and the Powerpuff Girls, except that the supportive father-figure is not her own, and the mother is a bitchy shrew. We have chubby Bess, mouthy George, and a hunky Ned, wildly improbable Powerpuff plot twists with a totally insupportable finish. Haunted by insecurities and uncertainty, the heroine still manages in all situations to perform heroically on an almost superhuman level. The jumping back and forth in time might have worked if there were secrets to have been revealed; as it is, it's merely annoying.
While purporting to have feminist themes, even characters in their fifties are referred to as "girls," career is trumped by "love," and the cast of stock female characters were hair-rippingly stereotyped and formulaic. If this is chick lit, I'm going back to dick lit. This was way too uneven to recommend even as kid lit, but that's the classification it deserves.
Didn't Live Up To The Title
From the title, I was expecting a somewhat Stephanie Plum-type story. I guess that was my unrealistic mistake. The story took quite a bit of time for me to connect with the characters. In fact, if not for the fact that I had used one of my credits for this, I might have stopped listening to it. The last quarter of the book was interesting and had a satisfying solution. The narrator did a good job. I probably will not read the next story.

    Even reversed, an engrossing story
I accidentally listened to this in reverse order. the second half, first. Even so, it still made sense, and I didn't realize until I had finished. It was a bit poignant to find out about the characters' lives that led up to the events of the 2nd half, knowing what would happen to them. A rather ho-hum story structure: what happens over the course of a year to the residents of one NYC building, but enough unexpected elements and character development to hold one's interest. Excellent narration. Loreilei King excels at separating her 3rd person narrator voice from the characters' voices and making nearly every character distinct and recognizaable.
A pleasing romp through the lives of New Yorkers
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not sure. Probably only to those who don't want to be overly taxed intellectually or depressed by the medical stuff/death.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I liked the details of New York life, but always wanted to know more about some of the characters. It was not an even representative of the characters. I wish the author hhad developed some of the characters more fully.
What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She was good enough. Her accent for British men was a bit lame.
Was Girl Next Door worth the listening time?
Meh. Had I been in better health and not stuck in bed, I probably would have not finished it.
    Any additional comments?
Such great potential for a good tale, but left me wanted more in-depth and realistic depictions. I thought NYC got the short drift in this one.
    A well written book.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    No.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    I wouldn't change it.
Have you listened to any of Lorelei Kings other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes and I think she is an excellent narrator.
Was Girl Next Door worth the listening time?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
It is a nice book if you like this kind of genre. I don't think it is terribly memorable but I did enjoy it.

    Members Reviews:
    Really enjoyable story
This is an 'unturnable off' story with thoroughly believable characters. It's an unusual setting in a stained glass workshop where a window is being restored. There's an historical element too related through a diary about how the window was first commissioned and built. Also a strong musical element, the main character, Fran is a tuba player.
The narration is excellent with each voice being instantly recognizable for who it's meant to be.
Easy listening but well written and read. Highly recommended
    Lovely!
Yet another good story from Rachel Hore. As usual, there is an interweaving of past and present with everything coming to a satisfactory, if somewhat expected, conclusion. Her historical information is spot on, and the description of Elgar`s "Dream of Gerontius" and the rehearsals, flows nicely. She`s obviously done her research!
However, Jilly Bond has to be THE most annoying narrator ever. Her voice is constantly full of emotion, yet her reading and interpretation of the characters is both emotion and passionless. In future, for me, Rachel Hore`s novels will have to be on the printed page unless narrated by someone else!!
    a little disapointing
Loved the gathering storm , but this one did not quite hit the spot. It seemed to labour on a little and I lost interest.
    Loved it
Loved this book from beginning to end. Very good story, in two tied time frames. Well read. A joy
    chick flix novel
Is there anything you would change about this book?
no, although I really don't want to read any more of rachel hores novels as they are all very samey and have gotten boring
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
not make is quite so predictable
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    non stood out
Do you think The Glass Painter's Daughter needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    no

    Bring a live Lomorna
Jilly Bond made it sound so beautiful & warming.. Bring West Cornwall a live & history of the Artist in Lomorna.
    Maggie Lambourn
Nice story a bit overly dramatic female characters
If you could sum up The Memory Garden in three words, what would they be?
    Scenery, discovery, drama
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Memory Garden?
None realy sticks out. The story flows without any climatic moment.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
As before, I cannot point a single scene that stood out.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really. It was enjoyable, the story interesting enough, but the overdramatic female characters kind of ruined it a bit.
    Any additional comments?
I didn't connect with the main character enough, I supose. It's a romantic book, and I was expecting more from the past and less from the present, a bit more history and less romance.
The story is there though and I enjoyed reading it. The narrator is very nice too.
    Easy listening and totally enjoyable
Really enjoyed this easy listening novel, not too fast, a little predictable but a classic holiday listen.
Excellent story & as always with RH well researched
Engaging characters & story lines. Adds depth to my knowledge of Cornwall too. I must go & look up some of the real life painters. I always enjoy RH 's characters. The heroine is far from perfect; she's "real".

A Pleasant way to pass the time
I enjoyed this book. It developed slowly which was surprising because it is not that long of a book. It reminded me quite a bit of a Georgette Heyer book. The plot is not driven by action but by words and by people meandering through their routine lives. It wasn't remarkable. It wasn't unforgettable. But it was very enjoyable. If you like Heyer. I think you would like this book.
    Passably enjoyable.
Anne Baker certainly isn't Georgette Heyer, but Ms. Baker does possess a clear writing style that surpasses many contemporary regency romance authors. It isn't a standout book but overall, a pleasant listening experience without gross sentimentality or hyper-sexuality.
    Jilted
At first the book was hard to get into, but once the story started it was a fairly good story.
