Mounting excitement set in the Antarctic!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would heartily recommend this audiobook to a friend. It was very unusual, being set in the Antarctic and combined all the excitement of a beautifully scripted adventure with a love story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The heroine, because she had all the human frailties, such as setting out on such an adventure without realising she was pregnant(?) but she was very strong, remaining ather post, with the possibility of being trapped in the antarctic over winter and having to give birth.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The finale when her hero pilots her to safety in the iced up helicopter and then has to deliver the baby himself!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Wonderment.
    Any additional comments?
Loved it to bits and am sorry I am coming to the end of Rosie Thomas' books...
    Brilliant escapism
I had not read this author before but can't wait to read another,In a way its a love story but its mostly a story of how a clever but cautious woman finds that she is more resourceful and strong witted than she could have believed.Because it is is set in the Antartic there is a great feeling of suspense and you feel that you are there with her trying to come to terms with living in close quarters with strangers.IThe narration is great and she does a good job of differiniating the characters.I did not want to do anything else but listen and am brokenhearted that I have had to leave Alice...
Surprised by a great story in an unlikely setting
What made the experience of listening to The Sun at Midnight the most enjoyable?
Characters I wanted to travel with. I'm not a great lover of tales of extreme adventure but this was about the human drama and the challenges of the Antarctic were knitted into the narrative. Couldn't stop listening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sun at Midnight?
    The birth of little Meg
Have you listened to any of Rula Lenskas other performances? How does this one compare?
She tackles a range of voices well, but the masculine ones seemed a bit more of a challenge for her in this book.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Love in a cold climate!!!
    Any additional comments?
Rosie Thomas has taken me from the heat of Kashmir via Egypt to the ice of the Antarctic. Her local knowledge shows real professionalism, but never outshines the skill of a master storyteller.
Rosie Thomas is my new favourite author
Rosie Thomas is a great story teller and writes beautifully too - more 'lit' than 'chick'! This is the second of her books I have read and it was a real page turner. A great mixture of adventure story and love story. I was so sad when it came to an end.
The narrator was generally good, although some of the voices she used - especially for men - were not very believable.

    Good story.
Entertaining. I'm English and my mum was of this age and told us all the stories of the USA serviceman and the Canadians. They always went dancing on a Saturday night . She was engaged a couple of times. Eventually marrying my dad who was in the RAF. They met right after the war. Good story.
    Great reading
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author really showed what women went through during WWII in England. It was enjoyable!

    Critic Reviews:
"Fully dimensional characters and a terrific story." (Booklist)

    Decent Prose too much vulgarty
The writer has a decent style but leans on cursing and vulgarity too much for my taste. I don't think the story line would have suffered without the crudeness.
    Good story but wrong narrator
The narrator had a baby-ish voice and started a lot of characters' voices with a lead-in chuckle, both of which I though detracted from the story. Overall, though, I'd recommend it.
    Funny
This book wasn't great but it was funny. Some of the antics by the characters was interesting and it didn't end like one would think. If you are looking for a laugh definitely listen to this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Supposedly there was a time, long ago when dating was simple. Rules were in place and long-held standards of courtship ensured that everyone knew what was expected of them and, more importantly, what to expect ... Following an alcohol-induced, relationship-combusting one-night stand, Isabelle Beckett finds herself suddenly single. Caught up in her big city career with an art auction house, her life is an enviable whirl of glamorous gallery openings, avant-garde ironing boards, and once-in-a-lifetime discoveries. That is, until Isabelle faces the fact that being single in a strange city is an experience for which she is quite unprepared. Forced to contend with hostile taxi drivers, fanged spiders in the shower and the humiliation of being discovered by her latest crush in a wetsuit-tutu combo, she struggles to retain her dignity and belief in romantic destiny. And then, just when she seems to be regaining control of life, Isabelle finds herself on the hit list of a Serial Dater.

    Editorial Reviews:
Isabelle Beckett moves from Melbourne to Sydney with her boyfriend - and he quickly abandons her to live in Adelaide. Despite hoping that they can sustain a long-distance relationship, Isabelle ends up mucking everything up with an alcohol-fueled one-night stand. Narrator Louise Crawford voices the newly single Isabelle with a delightful blend of sassiness, vulnerability, and quirkiness, and listeners will nod their heads in recognition as she describes the challenges of living and dating in a big city with humor and self-deprecation. Crawford weaves together the growing romantic tension between Isabelle and Dr. Jack with delicacy, and listeners will find it hard not to root for these endearing characters.

    Loved It! Hilarious & Fun
This was a light fluffy fun book and I enjoyed it a lot. This is the kind of book you pick up for a good laugh & a smile. The main character, Isabel isn't your typical chick lit socialite. She's an ordinary woman who tries to be sophisticated but somehow always ends up in the most hilariously awkward situations. Isabel's exaggerated imagination and colorful humor make the book a delight to listen to. The book is well worth the credit. I thoroughly recommend it for someone who's looking for a book that's a good laugh & loads of fun. This was money well spent.

    Beyond the Blonde was amazing!!!
I absolutley loved this book, it was fun, I enjoyed the book through and through, I did not want to pause it for anyhting.... it was like living in a different world. You could visulize the book as it played...
The book could just lift any mood.
    narrator ruins it...
the story is okay--typical chick lit fluff, but the narrator ruins it. I've listened to other books read by Susan Ericksen and I always think that I'll give her another chance, only to be disappointed in the end. She has an aggressive way of narrating and her accents are just TERRIBLE. She makes the Italian boyfriend sound about as authentically Italian as Luigi from Super Mario and her french accent is just awful. AWFUL!
Definitely give it a preview listen before purchasing--she may not annoy the crap out of you.
    sigh.

Love, lust and laughter in '80s England
"I write about the world I was brought up in, a world where snobbery, hypocrisy and unquestioned conservatism are the norm. I just try and show it like it is, and, God knows, that's damning enough."
--British novelist Mary Wesley, as quoted in her Telegraph obit 1/1/03
Mary Wesley started writing novels liberally laced with with love, sex and Brit wit in the mid 1980s at the age of 70. By the time she stopped writing in the late '90s, she'd written 10 best sellers, some of which were adapted for TV, "The Camomile Lawn" being the best known of them. Perhaps it was seeing "Camomile" on PBS ten years or so ago that led me to come here and buy all of her books. I devoured nine in short order, putting this one aside to save as a treat for later, as I knew the author had died and there wouldn't be more. I only came across it again the other day while reorganizing my book shelves. I instantly shelved the shelving and gave "Poppy" priority.
The tale of Poppy Carew opens just as our heroine has been dumped by her longterm live-in boyfriend, Edmund, and word comes that dear old Dad, from whom she's long been estranged (because Dad couldn't stand Edmund) is dying. Dad manages to stick around long enough to learn Edmund is out of the picture and dies with a smile on his face. At Dad's request and over the objections of others, Poppy arranges for a Furnival "Fun" Funeral and in the process attracts the interests of the funeral director along with a budding novelist, a pig farmer and the clod who'd just dumped her. This is the story of how she ends up and with whom. A most entertaining read.
Mary Wesley's other books are: "Jumping the Queue", "The Camomile Lawn," "Harnessing Peacocks", "Not that Sort of Girl", "Second Fiddle", "A Sensible Life", "A Dubious Legacy" "An Imaginative Experience" and "Part of the Furniture."
... one of Mary Wesley's entertaining romps where sex and love are always outrageous and amusing
It is one of Mary Wesley's entertaining romps where sex and love are always outrageous and amusing. Not the best of her books but very readable as she always is.
I love everything Mary Wesley wrote - Ms
