  • Rules for Saying Goodbye Audiobook by Katherine Taylor

    Title: Rules for Saying Goodbye
    Author: Katherine Taylor
    Narrator: Katherine Taylor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-01-07
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Chick Lit
    Publisher's Summary:
In Kate's world, pleasure and melancholy are close neighbors. Rules for Saying Goodbye follows Kate as she makes the unlikely migration from suburban California to a New England prep school, and then to Manhattan. There, she enjoys a dissipated life of bartending and writing novels, falling in love with the wrong boys, and discussing those boys while smoking borrowed cigarettes on the sofa with her best friend, Clarissa. Her devotedly neurotic mother is desperate for Kate to marry someone, anyone, so she can be sure that someone else will love her daughter after she dies. But Kate has other ideas.
In this witty and affecting debut novel, fiction winks at real life: Katherine Taylor is its muddled heroine, and also its author. Fizzing with intelligence and charm, Rules for Saying Goodbye chronicles that heart-grabbing moment when you stop waiting for things to happen to you and go in search of them yourself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Taylor is a superb satirist, eviscerating everyone in her Katherine's path. In the middle of the novel she drops a list of 'rules for saying goodbye'; it's extraneous, even precious, and it's the best thing in the book: e.g., 'Once you are gone, be gone for good.' Taylor manages to make worn New York yarns feel fresh again." (
    Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
List Of Rules Is The Best Part Of The Book
I agree with the critics comment that; the list of the rules for saying goodbye is the best part of the book. I did not think that she was a super satirist. I felt she wrote as a self-centered immature young woman. Her insights about her friends and family were less than adequate and embarrassingly immature. Her relationship with her war correspondent boyfriend was horrifyingly self-centered. The narration was adequate, not great; she sounded like a whiney teenager. I should know better than to listen to a book narrated by the author. I just barely made it through to the end of the book.
    fun and thoughtful
This book is a delightful experience to read. it's easy yet each word is beautifully chosen by the author to give the reader entertainment with a soul

Meredith Granger is frighteningly well-cultured and impossible to impress. So far, Anna hasn't even been allowed to meet her. But when Charlie leaves the country on business for the summer, Anna decides to take matters into her own hands. Reinventing herself from top to toe, Anna embraces a whole new life. Garden parties, Sunday tennis, little vintage dresses from Laura Ashley - it seems almost too easy. Skip it
It was dull drivel. Sorry, I deleted it because I couldn't find a single character I cared about. When I was rooting for Anna to get caught in her web of lies, left by her lover and dumped by her girlfriends I realized that this book was a waste of time. Vapid and dull. Quite a combo.
    Loved it
I keep looking out for more audio books by this author. I thought this book was hilarious. The main character was totally realistic and I loved all the scenes at the office with the "boys." Caro, the best friend is oh so how it really is...we've all have one like her. Same goes for the boyfriend...unfortunately. Nice book.
    Fun read
This was a good story. I'd read this author again.
Don't waste your time on this one!
Even the most experienced narrator cannot help when the story sucks: Way too long, unrealistic (even for a romantic novel) and a quickly written end. Would in no way recommend it.
    Boring
I found this to be a very long drawn out episode and could have been summed up in half the time. It did not hold my interest and took several weeks to finish. I was disappointed to say the least.

    Genres: Fiction, Chick Lit
    Publisher's Summary:
Since she was 13, one of the few things New York novelist Rebekah Kettle has been able to count on is the thrill of seeing a new movie by world-renowned filmmaker Arthur Weeman every fall. Now 33, the humor and poignancy of Weeman's singular movies have inextricably merged with her own memories, to the point that she has begun writing him letters under the guise of her 13-year-old self, and her teenage admiration has become a full-blown obsession. So when Rebekah steps back and takes stock of her life, she isn't happy with what she finds: she's unlucky in love, hopelessly stalled in her work, and unable to get over the past.
It's time for Rebekah to take action. She starts a relationship with Isaac Myman, a quirky paparazzo with whom she's suspiciously compatible. And she befriends Mrs. Williams, an eccentric older woman who needs her companionship. It seems things are looking up. But, just as unexpectedly, Rebekah discovers that Mrs. Williams' apartment has the most coveted view on the Upper East Side: straight into Arthur Weeman's town house, where she can watch the object of her obsession's life displayed like a silent movie. Weeman has always been a fixture on the rumor mill, but Rebekah has been his staunchest defender - until she sees the evidence for herself and has to ask herself some questions. Does she give her new love a chance at the scoop of a lifetime, a photo of the compromised Weeman, or does she remain loyal to the man whose films have defined her life?
Riotously funny and astonishingly moving, Little Stalker is a bold, daring, twisted, and lovable novel that could have come only from a literary voice as sharp and original as Jennifer Belle's.

takes awhile to get into, but enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book and I. Thought the ending was great. However, I also found it to be a little difficult to follow after sitting it down for a while. Becsides that I think it is the type of book you have to read or listen to yourself.
    It was okay...
I thought the story was cute, but the main character was a little too neurotic for me. I'm not really a big fan of the Woody Allenish type genre, so that probably had something to do with it. If you are a fan of Woody Allen, this is most likely for you - if you like your "chick lit" a little less oddl, maybe not.
    Bizarre....
This book was bizarre..I couldn't finish it. The narrator reads the entire thing, or up to where i stopped, as if she's patiently explaining to a toddler why he can't have candy before dinner..it's a condescending slow process to listen to it! And she uses a baby voice...That combined with the total lack of direction made this really bizarre...
    enjoyable
    First, what I liked:
    The characters were interesting, and I enjoyed the ins and outs of their relationships;
The chapter titles were a story of their own and made me smile.
What I didn't care for so much:
The sex scenes were too graphic for my tastes, I'm a bit more of a "leave it to the imagination" kind of girl...
Overall I enjoyed the story and its quirky, flawed characters. Just could have done with quite a bit less of the intimate details.

    Publisher's Summary:
Claire Truman's life is in a holding pattern. She's spent six years languishing away at a top publishing house, waiting to be promoted to editor and stretching her ridiculously small salary as far as it will go. And, fresh from an ugly breakup, she's in the midst of her favorite moping strategy: eating her weight in pizza. But when her best friend drags her to an art gallery opening, her life takes flight.
When she sees Randall Cox, the man she spent her entire college career lusting after, she can hardly believe her good luck. And when he marches over, strikes up a conversation and asks her to dinner, she thinks she's walking on air. The next morning, when the top editor at a rival publishing house calls her (at Randall's suggestion) with a job offer - complete with a promotion and three times her current salary - Claire believes she's getting everything she's ever wanted.
But be careful what you wish for. Vivian Grant, her new boss, is even worse than the industry gossip led her to believe. From her middle-of-the-night phone calls, her impossible demands, the ridiculous hours, and her insulting and vicious verbal attacks, Vivian piles on the work and the abuse. As work demands more and more of her time and her soul, will Randall Cox remain her Prince Charming?
    Critic Reviews:

    The other man
This book did have a similar feel to The Devil Wears Prada except that it was a bit less over the top in its characterization. ( A bit less.)
What made it a wonderful choice, was the work of the narrator, which was exceptionally strong. She has good writing and a strong heroine to work with.
The only reason I gave it three stars, instead of four, was the very sad relationship between the heroine and her (soon to be ex) fiance. This is a very present and complicated story line, which takes up far more of the book than the 'true love' she finds at the end. I found their attempt to love each other, even though they didn't love each other unbearably sad. Particularly hard to feel good about their break up since the fiance is lost and sad rather than dislikeable.
If pure romance is not an issue for you, you might very well enjoy the book despite that.
    Beware of Profanity!!
Would you try another book from Bridie Clark and/or Mary Birdsong?
No, due to the excessive profanity.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting aspect was the main character's heart.
The least interesting was the vulgar boss.
How could the performance have been better?
Eliminate profanity and expound more on the relationship of the ones who feel in love.
What character would you cut from Because She Can?
    The vulgar boss
    Any additional comments?
This could have been a good book, but it was ruined by the excessive profanity.
    If you loved
Let's say, vivian Grant makes Miranda Priestly seem like Mother Teresa. At least Miranda was unaware that she was a nut case. Vivian thrives on making others' lives miserable! I couldnt turn it off. I listened on my morning commute then sat in the parking lot at work.
    Not so special
    Not exactly what I expected.

    Members Reviews:
    Tender, heart-felt and beautifully narrated
A beautifully written novel with deep understanding of the characters involved and of human nature. The straddling of two eras was well executed. I truly enjoyed the narration which made the story come to life!
    LONG LONG AND LONG
Would you listen to Iris and Ruby again? Why?
No, I wouldn't listen again. I found this book very long and it didn't go anywhere. I am struggling to finish the 2nd part.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Maybe I won't get there
What about Rula Lenskas performance did you like?
I like Rula's reading but in this book I found it inconsistent. Ruby was part London Goth and part Toffee Tart
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Have yet to get there.
    Any additional comments?
I like stories that take me away and this book put me to sleep.
    Slow-moving
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would not. To be honest, I only got through the first half. The characters did not draw me in emotionally. Iris's lover was distanced and lacked warmth, so that the affair did not really seem that genuine to me. The story dragged. I am not one to give up early on a book but after the first half I asked myself "do I care what happens to these characters?" The answer was "no."
What aspect of Rula Lenskas performance would you have changed?
Her voice was good for the character of Iris, the grandmother. But it didn't fit with Ruby's character-it sounded too old and scratchy. And the way she did male voices (especially those of Egyptian characters) got on my nerves... Bad accents and somehow the men came off sounding simple-minded.
Was Iris and Ruby worth the listening time?
    Not for me.
    Shifts in time
This audiobook got me through a week in Disneyland Paris with 2 teenagers - great to have something distracting! It was beautifully read by Rula Lenska. The story flitted very well between the two generations and made me want to escape from Paris to Cairo. The war time scenes were particularly well done and I wondered what stories my mother might tell of her own experiences at that time to her granddaughters. Well worth a listen.
    Such a lovely story
Well read, easy to follow, a really lovely story of age and adolescence, of endless love, of war and loss, against a background of the streets of Cairo, now and during WWII. Well worth it.

    Short but sweet
Some lack of concentration led me to download the abridged version of this - normally I go for unabridged books, partly because I want my money's worth and partly because I'd rather hear exactly what an author and his or her editors originally wanted me to hear.
So the initial progression of the plot and the relationships within it was almost Mills and Boonish in its ... compact ... nature. This annoyed me for a while, but eventually I just enjoyed it for what it was. A sweet story with likeable characters and a satisfactory, if not obvious, ending. Narrated well, too.
Love this book, so glad my friend got it for me!
This is the first book I listened to by Dorothy Koomson and I loved it, my friend bought me this audiobook (and Marshmellows for Breakfast) and I really loved it. So much so that I got another of her audiobooks called Goodnight Beautiful.
I would highly recommend this audiobook, its a great story and well written. Its also narrated beautifully and it really made this audiobook.
I have already listened to this audiobook several times and plan to listen to it again soon. I couldn't recommend this audiobook more, its fantastic and one of my favourites.
Its a great book about two friends that fell out, then one of them got sick and needed the other to take care of her daughter. It shows how strong a friendship can be and about the journey of the child who lost her mum.
The friend that looked after the child had to learn how to be a mum, she had never had an interest in being a mum before. This book shows what she goes through and I must say its a very touching story. I think we all hope to have that kind of friend is the need ever arrises....
Brilliant book, brilliant narrator and highly recommended!
I love the book but this is a shame
when I first read this book 5 years ago I fell in love. It's just such a shame that so much of the story, detail and information are lost in this autobook version. It's completely cut the book in half and taking away key moments from the story witch I feel where so important to the making of the book. Such a shame! Read the book!
Good story but felt too short
Although it's a really good story and it's very well read, it was a bit too short.
Easy to read and you easily get attached to the characters.
One of my all time favourites!
My number one book, I've read and listened to it countless times and it never gets old.
