Intrigue and Suspense with a Good Dose of Romance
As I finished listening to Highland Spy, I just had to write a review to encourage anyone interested to listen to Dave Gillies narrate a wonderful romantic story of court intrigue and suspense.
Madeline Martin has written a fantastic story delivered by the incredible Dave Gillies!
All I can say is "I loved it" and would give it more than 5 stars if possible!
    Narrator ruined it for me
I listen to most books with ear buds. The sound Mr. Gillies makes is piercing actually hurting my ears. I cannot listen to another minute. Story might be good but was so distracted by the pain I couldn't pay attention. I'm returning.

    WONDERFUL!
I had read, the Irish Warrior, some time back, and simply adored it. However, this read, is equally good. I would not have expected to like it as much, but it is so moving, and worthwhile. Ms. Willingham is an amazing writer, with lots of depth, and feeling with her characters. It's always a bonus, when you think you've found a good story, only to discover it is great.
    intensely entertaining
At the beginning I had thought that this book would be "2nd best" as compared with its twin novel "To sin with a viking." But I found it just as entertaining and perhaps more intense in some areas. The author has the talent of provoking the imagination in many ways. I would recommend reading this novel but after its twin novel.
It began with the front cover!
I was completely taken in by the front cover! :-) The book is an easy read, I didn't have to back and re-read thinking "what just happened?"...there was honor at stake and plenty of lore and angst. I enjoyed reading it....and imagining the guy on the front cover!
    Not your average romance novel
I love the fact that it's not like most trashy romance novels where every other page is a sex scene. It's refreshing to read a story that has action, romance, and suspense. It reads and feels as if it were an old tale as apposed to porn on paper.
    Okay.
Not as exciting as I thought it to be . Only at the end of the book. It was just okay .

    I love this series
this is a great addition to the windham family series. I feel as if I have known this family for years.
    Great hero
Interesting and well developed storyline and good character development. Not sure if I liked the heroine as much at the beginning but as the story developed and as the hero helped her get stronger as a woman, she became much more likable. Would have liked to see some improvement in the male character as well, meaning it would have been nice to leave a small flaw or two to correct as their relationship grew.
The only other comment I have to make is that I wish Grace would have dealt with the "indiscretion" differently. Instead of talking about it the entire time until the first sexual encounter and then NOT mentioning it again until the very end of the book, it would have been nice to read it right after the first coupling. I had to go back again to make sure I did not miss the discussion, but I had not. I feel it took away from the book to leave that very important discussion to then to the very last page of the book. frustrating and confusing for the reader. A lovely end to the story nevertheless.

Breathe, smile, and curtsy in impossibly tight gowns (blast Lady Dorothea's sylph-like figure)
Charm and seduce a wild duke (without appearing to try)
Keep said duke far, far from her heart (no matter how tempting)

    Critic Reviews:
"Colorful supporting characters, plentiful plot twists, and the trials of star-crossed lovers make for a sizzling and heartwarming page-turner." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Really enjoyed this book a lot! Great Narration!
This was such and fun book. Very entertaining all the way through.
I loved Charlene and James, the disgraceful Duke of Harland. The chemistry and attraction between these two was great. It felt real and genuine. There was a couple very well written sex scenes. Not erotica not rated G, but steamy.
Very strong female lead character. No simpering whiny heroine here. A great hero in the disgraceful duke.
The story line and plot was fun. The were some fun characters. Great dialogue throughout the entire book.
    I totally recommend this book.
As for the narration it was great. Beverly Crick did a fantastic job! She does great with the men's voices. She reads with emotion as called for ie, laughing, crying, yelling etc. She has a nice reading voice too.
    The Unconventional Bride Hunt
If you could sum up How the Duke Was Won in three words, what would they be?
    Eccentric love story!
What did you like best about this story?
His invitation to four eligible debutantes and their mothers to visit his estate with the objective of choosing a bride. Pretending to be a Footman the handsome Duke wants to see his prospective brides when they were not being pretentious. His meeting with his four prospective brides as the "Footman" was hilarious.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When the Duke first met Lady Dorothea (Charlene Beckett) flirting with her as the Footman. To say he was surprised by "LADY" Dorothea's reaction is putting it mildly. Forming a mental picture of the scene still puts a smile on my face.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Trouble = inviting four prospective brides and their hopeful mamma's to the Ducal Estate to compete for the position of Duchess.
    Any additional comments?
This is Lenora Bell's debut novel but you'd never know it. I enjoyed "How the Duke Was Won" more than many books I have read/heard from seasoned authors. It was fresh, well written entertainment. Beverley A. Crick gave a great performance. I highly recommend it.
    FUNNY, ROMANTIC, ENGAGING!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes the narrator Beverley A. Crick was Wonderful to listen too. She nailed all the characters and made the story even better.

    Regency melodrama
Started off well but deteriorated to sappy last half. I wouldn't recommend this one. Narrator was good.
    Good story. Very good Narration!
This was a good story. I really liked the characters quite a bit. I always like a heroine that dresses up as a man sometimes.
Delia was a good lead character. She was funny when she was dressed as a man. It made for some LOL moments. She was witty and had spunk!
Warren was a bit of a surprise to be honest, didn't see the manwhore coming. LOL but he was a great character. The chemistry between the two was very good. It felt real and genuine.
The story line and plot was very good with an interesting twist at the end! Yay love a surprise twist. There was lots of fantastic dialogue all throughout the entire book.
I did like the second book in this series the most. But they were all good and fun listens.
As for the narration. I am a fan of Beverly Crick. She is much better now than she was 2 years ago. She does the men's voices very well. Everyone gets their own distinct voice and she reads with every emotion the story calls for, ie laughing, crying, giggling, snorting, etc. She does a great job and I really enjoy her narrations.
    Great twist at the end!
I've read hundreds of these romances and have most figured out before the middle of the book. This story had a.huge surprise at the end and it made my day. Definitely worth the credit.
My love for audiobooks and Sabrina Jeffries
Audiobooks have become an obsession! I listen to them in the car, at work and cleaning house! They are perfect when your favorite writers come out with a new book and you're too busy to stop and read!
I have been a fan of Sabrina Jeffries for many years. Meeting her in person was the highlight of my existence! She's a fabulous lady and I adore her stories.
The Danger of Desire is one of her best yet! She combines grief, intrigue and desire into a tale that has the reader gasping for more!
Beverley A. Crick's performance of this story brings to life the characters and the time period.
If you love a little matchmaking, strong characters with a heroine willing to risk all for those she loves, and a handsome rake who has a dark secret, you will love The Danger of Desire!
    Another winner for Jeffries
Quite a nice read/listen. I'm a Sabrina Jeffries fan and this latest book did not disappoint.
I won't go into the plot; that's available elsewhere. The characters were fun and enjoyable as was the story.

Review on Unwilling by Elizabeth Adams
A delightful P&P variation. The pacing is good, and the characters well developed. I enjoyed Elizabeth Adams' writing style tremendously. I tend to find most P&P variations drag along the way as the story unfolds, but this one is very well-done. Of course, the author doesn't really dwell on unpleasant characters; there is no antagonists in the story: Lady Catherine and Wickham are nowhere to be seen, but the story itself is cleverly-plotted. It is different than any other P&P variations I have read before, and I have to admit that it outshines most of them.
The narrator has done a good job; at first I found it odd to have a male narrator , but it all turned out splendidly.
Another great story by Miss Adams
I really liked this story . Watching (or listening in this case) to Darcy & Elizabeth grow into a cherished love was very warm hearted . I loved the new Mr, Bennet & his silly wife . What a little vagary can do to a character is amazing
Although the narrator was very good & has a lovely speaking voice It was a little hard listening to Lizzy & Jane with a male voice trying to be feminine LOL
    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK
    classic pride and prejudice vaguery
I loved the story, with Mr Bennett taking more control of his daughters future, so much so I was ok with the more worldly Jane marrying Mr Walker instead of the unreliable Mr Bingley.
The story starts in Hunsford with Elizabeth accepting Mr Darcy at the request of her ailing father.
We follow Elizabeth and Darcy from the seaside, to London and into the Friday month of their wedding, as they learn more about each other. Darcy learns more slowly about his pride and Elizabeth learns slowly to live him.
The epilogue is my favorite part.
The narration was great, with him changing voices for the different characters.
    Enjoyable book and great narration
I enjoyed this Pride and Prejudice variation and very much appreciated the male narrator, Mark Topping.
    nothing happened
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Being an avid P&P reader, I was disappointed that there were no challenges for the two lovers.
Would you recommend Unwilling to your friends? Why or why not?
Really a disappointing retelling and would not recommend it.
What about Mark Toppings performance did you like?
    better than average
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    not really

Inaccuracies for the period and errors galore!!
The most important aspect of writing a historical romance is to get the damned details of the period correct! Otherwise, one should stick to writing about the 21st century! Ms. Devon talks about towering, powdered hair and stomachers, and on the next page, talks about how fat "Prinny" was. Newsflash! While Prinny was born in the 1760s, he did not become grossly fat until around 1810, and the hair and clothing fashions she highlights had died out somewhere between 1780 and 1800! Consistency is key in period novels and Ms. Devon did not do her homework to ensure that her stories were accurate portrayals of the period. Additionally, the book is rife with a ridiculous amount of typos, excess words, misplaced words, grammar and punctuation errors and, more annoying, misused words. The words are brooch, not broach, placket, not placate, and dour, not dower!! My God, doesn't anyone learn proper English or use a dictionary any more?! Two words of advice...dictionary dot com should be your best friend if you are a weak writer and hire a damned editor before you publish such dreck!

What a wonderful and perfect end to the series!
I'm already listening to the story for the 3rd time. Narrator was outstanding as well.

    Is this really the end?
I loved this series, but I kind of feel like this last book was rushed. The entire story feels like it moved too quickly through the characters. Not much development of their love story, in my opinion. Otherwise it's good!
