Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Why would a Hungarian man run down a Manhattan street ranting "I'm king of the Puerto Ricans"? What made a physically healthy woman persuade surgeons to operate on her more than a dozen times? How could a man in a straitjacket commit suicide while in a strictly supervised, locked psychiatric ward? Though these and the other stories in this book sound like fiction, each is true. Former practicing psychiatrist Mark Rubinstein takes listeners deep into the world of mental illness.
From the chaos of a psychiatric ER to the bowels of a maximum security prison, the stories range from bizarre to poignant and the people from noble to callous. Bedlam's Door depicts the challenges mental illness poses for patients, families, and health-care professionals and offers hope for the future. Like the case histories in The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks, it shows that though every person's story is unique, we are all more alike than different and are linked by our shared human experience.

Title: Perfect Pitch in the Key of Autism
Subtitle: A Guide for Educators, Parents, and the Musically Gifted
    Author: Susan Rancer, Henny Kupferstein
    Narrator: uncredited
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-16
Publisher: Henny Kupferstein & Susan Rancer
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Autistic people and musical individuals often have perfect pitch, a gift they were born with. The musical gift may be accompanied with learning differences such as reading comprehension problems, trouble with mathematics, and significant difficulties in learning how to read music. This book was written by a music therapist and an autistic researcher, and is endorsed by leading experts in the field of autism and special-needs education. The Rancer Method is presented with detailed instructions to be implemented with readily-available method books so that every piano teacher can follow it and do well by their students.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book will help the quirky kid who is different to be successful in music. This method may help open musical doors for many individuals on the autism spectrum." (Temple Grandin, author
    Thinking in Pictures and
    The Autistic Brain)

    content awesome, writing not awesome
While the insight the authors present into the behavior and learning path of an autistic music student with perfect pitch is incredibly valuable, gleaning that insight from this book is difficult.
No editor worth his/her wages would allow this manuscript to go to press. The title of the book indicates parents and educators are the target audience, but parts of two chapters suddenly address music therapists and doing music therapy business. The organization of the book at both the macro and micro levels does not lead the reader logically from one topic to the next and I referred to the table of contents frequently when I got lost. Indeed, paragraphs are malformed in places. Colloquialisms abound. The authors must find a more professional way to refer to themselves. Case studies seem to be descriptions of students and their amazing accomplishments, rather than expositions on how the students got from point A to point B with the authors' help. Reading the book was often fingernails-on-chalkboard for an experienced writer.
That said, there is no doubt about the value of the work described in the book. The insight into the approach of autistic music students to music and sound has made all the difference between success and failure for my autistic student (who had already burned through one teacher). I have learned how to read his behavior to avoid many lesson difficulties thanks to this insight. The insight offered into the gift of perfect pitch is equally valuable. Suggestions for "nontraditional" (whatever that means) learning avenues abound. I would find it difficult to implement the note-reading method the authors propose directly, but other teachers may find it to be a step-by-step guide to success with their students. This book has clearly affected my work with autistic students directly and most of my other students indirectly.
In summary, after a complete rewrite with the aid of a good editor, this book would likely become one of the seminal pedagogical works of our time. In its current condition, however, I can only recommend it to the most motivated reader.
    Extraordinary book
Wonderful book---opens up a whole new world. Her descriptions of the many ways the brain learns is brilliant.

    Title: Take Pride
Subtitle: Why the Deadliest Sin Holds the Secret to Human Success
    Author: Jessica Tracy
    Narrator: Coleen Marlo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A leading psychologist reveals how our most misunderstood emotion - pride - has shaped our minds and our culture, and shows how we can harness its power.
Why did Paul Gauguin abandon middle-class life to follow the path of a starving artist? What inspired Bill Gates to give away so much of his hard-won fortune? How has Donald Trump succeeded so excessively, when his winning style could easily be his greatest liability?
As the renowned emotion researcher Jessica Tracy reveals in Take Pride, each of these superachievers has been motivated by an often maligned emotion: pride. Its dark, hubristic side is well known, but Tracy shows that pride is also essential for helping us become our best, brightest selves. By making us care about how others see us and how we see ourselves, pride makes us strive for excellence. In the right doses and the right contexts, it has been proven to boost creativity, motivate altruism, and confer status and power on those who display it. In Take Pride, Tracy explains why we came to feel pride and how we can make this double-edged emotion serve us - rather than the other way around.

    good
great book. the authors insistence to include exacting strategies for how and why she collected data and came to her conclusions was at times tedious to get through, especially at the beginning but was worth the read overall.
    Must read till the end!!
The author gives pride extreme importance but then comes back to explain how it fits in to our modern society.
The authors choice of examples are political and therefore poor, although I agree regarding the final remarks about now President Trump, I know plenty of people who see Obama as arrogant

Feeling Good by Dr. David D. Burns is a self-help guide to using cognitive therapy (CT) as an effective, scientifically proven tool for combating depression of all degrees, especially when used in combination with therapy and possibly medication. Cognitive therapy is based on the idea that people's perceptions about themselves, their relationships, their job, and their overall life will shape their feelings. When people can change their thinking, they can drastically and often rapidly improve their mood. Research has proven that CT is often as effective as medication. Feeling Good offers a comprehensive strategy for changing negative perceptions and includes tools for doing so, such as mood assessment and targeted writing techniques. Once people have addressed and corrected distorted thinking, they live happier, healthier, and more productive lives.
A commonly held belief is that external circumstances will determine an individual's emotional state. According to the CT model, emotional disorders, such as....

I felt that this summary came across as if this excellent, helpful. and very therapeutic book, Feeling Good, was lame & judgmental toward those who are depressed, and/or have a sense of low self worth.
I felt that this summary of Feeling Good, in NO way, honored the hopefulness this book truly offers - life changing- if you do the homework.
I have the other audible Feeling Good book summary, and that one makes you want to pick up the book itself and dig in/get better. The other audible summary really gives a depressed person hope. This did none of the sort.

Neuropsychologist offers hope to those struggling with depression.
As a board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson sees the devastation of depression. Early on, she practiced the most effective treatments and prescribed them for her clients. But when she experienced depression herself, she found that the treatments she had recommended were lacking. Her experience showed her the missing component in treating depression.
In Hope Prevails, Dr. Bengtson writes with deep compassion, blending her training and faith, to offer listeners a hope grounded in God's love and grace. She helps listeners understand what depression is, how it affects them spiritually, and what, by God's grace, it cannot do. The result is an approach that offers the hope of release, not just the management of symptoms.
For those who struggle with depression and those who want to help them, Hope Prevails offers hope for the future.

Finally a book from a Dr that understands !
I first started getting Michelle's email subscriptions from a dear friend who knew I struggled greatly with depression and have struggled for years ! I have read many books and see both a psycho therapist and psychiatrist for monitoring meds . They are both Christians and have helped me immensely but this book ( I have read many others ) is scriptural , common sense , she speaks to you as a dear friend all the while giving sound medial advice and still helping encourage you and not go by the world's standards of when you are to be healed completely or well , etc. you will not be wasting your money on this book ! Dr. Michelle Bengston gives you practical ,God given advice and seriously meets you where you are at and it also is a very good book for family members that have a loved one that struggles with depression ! Thank you Michelle so much and God bless you !
Some books are like a coach giving a pep talk to a team
Some books are like a coach giving a pep talk to a team. Other books speak to your heart which is exactly what Hope Prevails does. Dr. Bengtson's words are convicting, causing the reader to reach deep in their hearts, seeking God to heal all wounds. Reading this book will take you deeper into faith and bring peace that transcends all of our understanding.
I'm praising God for the courage of Dr. Michelle ...
I'm praising God for the courage of Dr. Michelle Bengtson to uncover one of the sources of depression that is rarely discussed......the spiritual source. A friend and I are only on chapter three of her book and study guide, but I am seeing such growth in her as a result of the understanding she is coming into about this spiritual component. She is having one "aha" moment after another and reports that her days are already brighter and more hopeful than they have been in a very long time. Well done, Dr. Bengtson!

    Publisher's Summary:
What is autism: a devastating developmental condition, a lifelong disability, or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius?
In truth it is all of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Following on from his groundbreaking article 'The Geek Syndrome', Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.
Going back to the earliest autism research and chronicling the brave and lonely journey of autistic people and their families through the decades, Silberman provides long-sought solutions to the autism puzzle while casting light on the growing movement of 'neurodiversity' and mapping out a path towards a more humane world for people with learning differences.
    Members Reviews:
A journey through the history of autism.
Many parent who have newly diagnosed autistic sons or daughters are at the beginning of a journey with their child to optimise their life chances. There are courses on offer and 'expert specialists' who can advise us, but where did the culture of diagnosis and treatments available develop and what precipitates their development. This book will help anyone develop an understanding of some of the challenges faced by families with autistic members. The book also charts the political, social and economic influences that have shaped what we recognise as autism today. As an autistic person and mother of two autistic children reading this book, it is wonderful to hear that resources are moving away from curing or eradicating to focus on support to integrate people affected by autism into a health daily life. Lorna Wing and Asperger emerge with Temple Grandin as the heroes of this book, I think they are also my heroes.
The book is more approachable to read than some academic works and offers an over view of some of the theories surrounding autism. Not shying away from the darker days of the Second World War in Europe and how many young children were murdered because of their disability, it is at time challenging but well worth reading.
    Varied and informative.
Much easier to listen to than it was to read. Includes examples of successful autists while also showing those individuals who, along with their families struggle the most and their challenges and successes. Demonstrates how guidelines for the diagnosis have evolved and why. With an interesting look at those involved such as Leo Kanner, Hans Asperger, Lorna Wing, Wakefield and many other lesser known.
    informative and well written
What made the experience of listening to Neurotribes the most enjoyable?
this is a good piece of well researched journalism. Steve is sympathetic and optimistic and has a way of structuring his points which its difficult to argue with( though not impossible)
this is a detailed history of Autism, dispelling the epidemic theory, and advocating acceptance and a celebration of diversity

The narcissist says things like "how do you know we'll be together in two years", or "we should sign a prenuptial agreement when we get married." Is it your imagination, or was the narcissist just warning you of things to come? You don't want to seem as though you are crazy by making off-the-wall assumptions or predicting the future, but the narcissist drops hints of impending doom. You are never sure when to call his bluff.
The narcissist is a character in his own story. He employs the tactic of foreshadowing throughout his storytelling. He is omnipresent and omnipotent. He detests and resents anyone who paints the story for him, and thus he seeks to tell the story even in advance of itself. He wants to be the director, the storyteller, the adversary, and the hero. He narrates his life and his intentions so that he doesn't feel as though anyone else has a say over what will happen to him.
The narcissist isn't conscientious of others, or agreeable. He sees himself as a man's man. He sees himself as being resourceful and self-supporting. He is resentful of his need to connect with or work with other people. He will constantly remind other people that he doesn't need them around. He insists on taking care of himself, and relying on others must mean that he is weak. He resents anyone else who tells him what to do, or how to do it.
