    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-21-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In this engaging and intriguing work, renowned Japanese psychologist Hayao Kawai examines his own personal experience of how a Japanese became a Jungian psychoanalyst and how the Buddhism in him gradually reacted to it.
Kawai reviews his method of psychotherapy and takes a fresh look at I in the context of Buddhism. His analysis, divided into four chapters, provides a new understanding of the human psyche from the perspective of someone rooted in the East.
Kawai begins by contemplating his personal koan: "Am I a Buddhist and/or a Jungian?" His honest reflections parallel Jung's early skepticism about Buddhism and later his positive regard for Buddha's teachings. He then relates how the individuation process is symbolically and meaningfully revealed in two philosophical and artistic picture series, one Eastern and one Western.
After exploring the Buddhist conception of the ego and the self, which is the opposite of to the Western view, Kawai expands psychotherapy to include sitting in silence and holding contradictions or containing opposites.
Drawing on his own experience as a psychoanalyst, Kawai concludes that true integration of East and West is both possible and impossible. Buddhism and the Art of Psychotherapy is an enlightening presentation that deepens the listener's understanding of this area of psychology and Eastern philosophy.
The book is published by Texas A&M University Press.

Marvelous insight into the intersection of East & West
This is a unique & inspired book by the 1st Jungian analyst in Japan, who provides rare & unusual insight into the differences & similarities between East & West psychology- both theoretical & personal. Kawai provides inputs from his family's Jodo (Pure Land) sect as well as his "2nd Master" the Buddhist monk Myoe's (1173-1232) Kegon (Garland) sect & Zen (both Soto & Rinzai). He begins with an eye-opening biography of his personal journey to both Jungian psychology & Buddhism with relationships to Freud's & Rogers' psychologies. He expands on his friends' Spiegelman & Miyuki's "Buddhism & Jungian Psychology" analysis of the Zen Ox-herding Pictures, including photos both Ku-on's & a contemporary Japanese woman's version (but not Pu-ming's) & a similar comparison with the alchemical Rosarium Philosophorum but with an interesting chart comparing the titles of each plate-pointing out the amazing similarity. Many of his observations are revealed in a personal manner--he shares himself with the reader.
Comparing East & West: p. 110: "Complementarity of Buddhist `eachness' & Western individuality" & pp. 30-1: "I found that my psychotherapy was deeply related to what Buddhist sutras deal with," & p.

    Title: The Memory Code
Subtitle: The Traditional Aboriginal Memory Technique That Unlocks the Secrets of Stonehenge, Easter Island and Ancient Monuments the World Over
    Author: Lynne Kelly
    Narrator: Louise Siverson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-22-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In the past the elders had encyclopaedic memories. They could name all the animals and plants across the landscape and the stars in the sky, too. Yet most of us struggle to memorise more than a short poem.
Using traditional Aboriginal Australian songlines as the key, Lynne Kelly has identified the powerful memory technique used by indigenous people around the world. She has discovered that this ancient memory technique is the secret behind the great stone monuments like Stonehenge, which have for so long puzzled archaeologists.
The stone circles across Britain and Northern Europe, the elaborate stone houses of New Mexico, huge animal shapes in Peru, and the statues of Easter Island all serve as the most effective memory system ever invented by humans. They allowed people in nonliterate cultures to memorise the vast amounts of practical information they needed to survive.
In her fascinating audiobook, The Memory Code, Lynne Kelly shows us how we can use this ancient technique to train our memories today.
    Members Reviews:
    Good book, a bit repetitive
I purchased this book because i am very interested in developing my memory and memory techniques. I really enjoyed the book, since it gave me new ideas on how to expand my memory systems, mix different techniques and develop more ways of storing information. It is definitely worth the read. Having said that, the descriptive part on archeological sites is a bit too similar and dense in my opinion. A bit too much like reading the PHD dissertation than a leisure book. I would much rather have the author expand on how & why she chose to create her different memory journeys, as well as the troubles and tips she found while making her different mnemonic devices and how she thinks we could apply these techniques it in today's world.
    thoroughly enjoyable, practical and enlightening
Would you listen to The Memory Code again? Why?
This book was thoroughly enjoyable in both is revelations around memory devices used by both neolithic cultures and indigenous cultures around the world (they may have been understood by others but this is the first account of them that made sense to me). The book was beautifully read by Louise Silverson. I had heard of the oral histories of the indigenous cultures of New Zealand and Australia but had never conceived any notion of how they achieved their incredible feats of memory. Lynne beautifully outlines some of these methods and more importantly, for me, helps me understand how country and songlines become so important to telling that story for indigenous groups - a concept I knew about but couldn't quite comprehend previously. It also occurs to me that so many 'libraries' were destroyed by our forebears inability to understand the impact of taking children away from their countries and cultures and displacing whole groups - how much knowledge have been lost because a generation wasn't taught these histories.

    Release date: 05-19-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of The Drunkard's Walk and coauthor of The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking) and War of the Worldviews (with Deepak Chopra) here examines how the unconscious mind shapes our experience of the world, and how, for instance, we often misperceive everything from our relationships with family, friends and business associates, the reasons for our investment decisions, to our own past.
Your preference in politicians, the amount of tip you give the waiter-all our judgments and perceptions-reflect the workings of our mind on two levels, the conscious, of which we are aware, and the unconscious, which is hidden from us.
The latter has long been the subject of speculation, but over the past two decades scientific researchers have developed remarkable new tools for probing the hidden, or subliminal, workings of the mind.
The result of this explosion of research is a new science of the unconscious, and a sea change in our understanding of how the mind affects the way we live. These cutting-edge discoveries have revealed that the way we experience life-our perception, behavior, memory, and social judgment-is largely driven by the mind's subliminal processes and not by the conscious ones, as we have long believed.
Employing his trademark wit and his lucid, accessible explanations of the most obscure scientific subjects, Leonard Mlodinow takes us on a tour of this research, unraveling the complexities of the subliminal self, increasing our understanding of how the human mind works, and how we interact with friends, strangers, spouses and coworkers. In the process he changes our view of ourselves and the world around us.
Leonard Mlodinow received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California, Berkeley, was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute, and now teaches at the California Institute of Technology. He also wrote for the television series MacGyver and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

    very good topic bias
very good words on how my mind tricks me and the implicit biases we all share. the ending was particularly very good with the study about emotional illusions and the quote by jobs
    insights of the mind
Really enjoyable, good narration (although had to slow to 90%) and very interesting info about how the mind works. Read/listened to a few in this area but still found this new and engaging.
doesn't include an attachment of figures discussed (e.g. one to show your blindspot) which is a bit of a pain as they're heavily discussed
    Fascinating!
If you could sum up Subliminal in three words, what would they be?
A fascinating look at what happens below our conscious mind and how it influences every part of our perception. The book looks and both the pros and cons and how your rational decisions might actually be far from rational. The author manages to make the subject entertaining (even humorous) and salient. Highly recommended.
Possibly the most important book I've ever read!
A fascinating insight into the power of our subconscious mind. Engaging and even entertaining throughout. Thank you Leonard.
    Fascinating & useful!

    Fascinating Listening...
Dr Anthony Clare's conversations with various public figures are an intriguing insight the individuals he interviews.
His professional skill in respectfully honing in on the essence of what makes these people 'tick' is akin to being in the audience at the theatre for a top notch dramatic play - the difference being it isn't fiction. Even if some of these celebrities are unknown to you, their stories will keep your interest.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a summary of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset. Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment but may actually jeopardize success.
With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades as well as reach our own goals - personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

    Publisher's Summary:
As an individual, it's easy to assume that there's not a lot you can do to affect change within a large group or an audience, but such an assumption is misleading. Look at Martin Luther. Look at his namesake, Martin Luther King Jr. Look at Hitler. Whether for good or for bad, these individuals have succeeded at calling large groups of people to action in completely radical ways.
People behave and react differently to things in groups than they do as individuals. A guy at a club with his buddies is almost always going to feel more confident and be more willing to try crazier things than the guy who came alone. By herself, you might never get the urge to take eight shots in rapid succession and then go make out with strangers and dance on tabletops, but with your friends, you sometimes turns into a party animal willing to take just about any suggestion thrown out there.
This book by author William Legend is about exploring the phenomenon of mass psychology and showing you how you can harness these powers to meet your own goals. It will give you detailed answers to questions like: How much power does an individual have over a group? Why and how do people conform? To what extent is behavior contagious? Do people always act in line with their beliefs?
The purpose of this book is to flesh out the answers to these questions and more in greater detail to show you how you can control, influence, manipulate, and persuade any group or audience.
